Over the years I’ve seen all kinds of BJJ instructionals aimed at beginners, mostly claiming that they’ll help them master legal leg locks and teach them safe ways of leg locking, whatever that may mean. The Great Equalizer

People tend to award the title of the “great equalizer” to plenty of things in BJJ, but I think it was leg locks that really made it stick. However, while many people assume this refers to all leg looks, the reality is somewhat different. If you see a 115 lb female grappler attempt a kneebar against a 240 lb male partner, you’ll see exactly what I mean.

Now, place the same pair of imaginary grapplers in a heel hook situation, with the female going for the sub, and you get that great equalizer at the price of painful grimaces on the giant male grappler’s face. That is where leg locks excel.

We could change the roles of the grapplers in this example to fit many different narratives – differences in belts, age, and body type are all factors that can be negated using a well-placed heel hook.

The issue is that many gyms still shy away from teaching new students heel hooks, which turns them into useless higher belts. For those who have a shred of common sense and want their students to succeed outside the “these moves are too advanced for beginners” bubble, the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD offers a great blueprint to teach newbies how to heel hook properly.

The Daisy Fresh Crew

Heath Pedigo, a BJJ black belt under Rodrigo Vaghi from the Rickson Gracie lineage, is the man behind the crazy project known as Dasisy Fresh that spread like wildfire through the BJJ World during the pandemic. Heath put together a team of very talented grapplers who lived together, training all day long, and ended up with some incredible performances on the world stage!

Jacob Couch is one of Heath’s students and a prominent member of the Daisy Fresh squad.  ‘The Hillbilly Hammer” as he is known, got his black belt from Heath Pedigo in 2022, after becoming a staple name on the No-Gi scene representing the Daisy Fresh team which is actually called the Pedigo Submission Fighting team.

In the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD, both these grappling characters come together to show a curriculum of sorts that they use to teach heel hooks to complete beginners.

Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD Review

The Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD is a No-Gi installation with 4 volumes, each lasting around the 30-minute mark. This brings the entire running time of the DVD to about 2 hours. There is also a third member of the team, BJJ beginner Casey Marshall who directly demonstrates how easy it is for beginners to understand Heath and Jacob’s way of doing heel hooks.

Part 1 – Attachment

If you’ve ever seen a Daisy Fresh team training session you probably have an idea what you’re in for. There won’t be any long-winded philosophical explanations in this one, as Heath and Jacob cover exactly what you need to get through ADCC open brackets using heel hooks.

The very first volume of the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD covers best practices on attaching yourself to the legs of your opponent. A lot of information goes into explaining the nature of lower body connections and how to ensure your leg entanglement position does not turn into a pass from the opponent.

The direction of sweeps, which is an integral part of every Ashi Garami game also features in this instructional, with Couch and Petigo covering when to opt out of heel hooks and get top position.

Part 2 – Keeping the Ashi

With no heel hook finishes in the first part of the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD, I hoped for some in the following volume. No luck, but I was not disappointed as this part covers what I find to be the most difficult aspect of heel hooking – heel exposure.

The Daisy Fresh crew demonstrates exactly how they do it, which is, safe to say, quite different from the Danaher way. That doesn’t make it less effective, though, it is just easier to master. Chapters include keeping tight control of the legs and never losing the knee line while you’re digging for those heel hook grips.

Part 3 – Submission Combinations

In part 3, the heel hooks come out, but not before the usual gateway leg lock, the ankle lock, makes an all-important appearance. The first submission in the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook DVD is not a heel hook per se, as the trio of Heth, Jacob, and Casey demonstrate how to use ankle locks to set up really deep heel hooks without having to dig for them directly.

As finishing details for the submission emerge, the focus is on keeping the knee line and ensuring the opponent doesn’t roll. Since rolling out is not just a common, but also an intuitive way out of a heel hook (for those who know what they’re doing), the information provided in this DVD is extremely useful in preventing such actions.

Part 4 – Switching Heel Hooks

As we reach the final portion of the short but exceedingly enjoyable Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD, it is all about finishing. My favorite adjustment in terms of highly reliable finishes plays a key role in this volume – heel hook grips.

Nothing is going to skyrocket your success with hell hooks as much as switching grips while finishing. In that regard, Pedigo, COuch, and Marshall go very far in demonstrating the prowess of the butterfly grip, as well as a few more that really make a difference.

They also look at the relationship between outside and sindie heel hooks, and how you can switch without having to change the control you have with the legs too much. WRaping up in style, they show how you set everything they show up when you’re dealing with a standing opponent.

Heel Hooks For Beginners

During my review of the Heath Pedigo and Jacob Couch Heel Hook The World DVD, I had to restart this section several times as I went on needless “why aren’t we teaching beginners everything” rants, rather than exploring the practical applications of the material presented in the instructional.

One reason why this instructional stands head and shoulders above others is that Heath and Jacobactaulyl have a beginner doing all the work in this DVD – teammate Casey Marshall, WHile they are demonstrating, explaining, and guiding, it is Casey who does most of the work, directly demonstrating that the material is extremely easy to use for beginners.

On top of that, Heath himself explains that while the material is really  “dumbed down” to fit the needs of white and blue belts primarily, even seasoned black belts who have a clunky understanding of heel hooks will find useful information in it. I agree completely with him.

Jsut another Ashi Garmi DVD or something really worth exploring? The latest rendition of Danaher’s popular leg locking system dubbed the  Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD features one of his start students who seems to have a solid head on his shoulders.

Giancarlo Bodoni is not just a meathead grappler (sorry Gordon) but also seems to be a very intelligent fellow who likes to think on his own accord. That makes him a formidable opponent, but also exactly the person you want to teach you. And when it comes to Ashi Garmi, having Bodoni explain the latest developments is like learning physics from Hawking.

Key Takeaways

  • A 5-hour long No-Gi DVD instructional with eight volumes of Ashi Garmi material.
  • Covers the latest developments in the No-Gi Ashi Garami game.
  • New Ashi positions, baiting tactics, transitions, finishes, and lots of sweeps.
  • BJJ World Expert Rating: 10 out of 10.

Ashi Garami is About More Than Leg Locks

So you’re not a leg locker but you’re reading the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD review. Don’t worry we won’t tell. Even better, you’ll learn something about the Ashi Garami that has a lot to do with playing guard and not much to do with leg locks.

For those thinking outside the box, Ashi Garami is a set of positions that go far beyond just a huge potential for leg locks. The entanglement itself is a great way to understand the 50/50 situation that happens during sweeps when both players are on the mats with their hips.

If you’ve ever competed at a high level, you know that this is where sweep battles are won and lost. Now imagine having the best possible tool designed to keep the other person with their hips to the mats, as you comfortably gain the top position and two points. Well, there is, and it is the Ashi Garami. And let’s not forget that you can submit from there as well.

The Grappling Pedigree of Giancarlo Bodoni

Born in 1995 in Miami, Giancarlo has spent a lifetime practicing martial arts. He was 5 when he first enrolled in a Karate class, and the ball just kept rolling from there. Going through most of the usual martial arts for a 90’s kid, Bodoni spent time in Taekwondo, as well before discovering Gracie Barra.

Yeah, you read that right. Bodoni spent a lot of his early days gaining a fundamental understanding of Jiu-Jitsu under Gracie Barra’s Rillion Gracie. It was only after a visit to Brazil that Bodoni discovered the GFTeam, and it took moving to Charlotte to end up at Alliance, that gym that introduced him to the BJJ world.

Under the tutelage of Lucas Lepri, Giancarlo Bodoni made all the right splashes as a brown and eventually black belt, both grades awarded to him by Lepri himself. The Alliance association crafted a path for Bodoni to meet Bernardo Faria, who then led him toward his current home – Danaher’s New Wave Jiu-Jitsu team.

As we go on to explore the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD, it becomes apparent just how far he has come but has a teacher and a competitor.

Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD Review

Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD is a No-Gi instructional organized in 8 different volumes, each lasting differently. The total running length of the video material is almost 5 hours, and the information inside it is incredibly useful to anyone involved in BJJ.

Part 1 – All About Kuzushi

This Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD is one of the best Ashi Garami instructional I have ever seen. That much is apparent from the very first moment, where he spends the better time of half an hour talking about the most important aspect of effectiveness from Ashi positions – off-balancing.

Clearly influenced by the Danaher leg lock philosophy, Bodoni places a lot of emphasis on how he destabilizes his opponents, as well as the direction he wants them to take. In addition to talking about Kuzushi from the bottom, Bodoni also covers his general approach to playing the Ashi Garami game in No-Gi.

Part 2 – Testing The Connection

I particularly enjoyed this art of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD, where the young grappling prodigy emphasizes how key solid connection it to have any sort of tangible success with the Ashi Garami. he shares a very useful connection test that can work as a great drill to get you tighter with your Ashi.

Aslo featuring in this volume are integrations of Kuzushi with the connection in the elevator drill, as well as direct sweeping options. Bodoni promises efficiency and states that sometimes it is far more efficient to sweep from Ashi rather than hunt for leg locks.

Part 3 – Sweeping From Ashi

On the subject of sweeping form Ashi Garami positions, Bodoni shares a whole host of those in the third volume of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD. He begins with a very neat ankle pick and talks about using misdirection to increase the effectiveness of off-balancing.

A couple of sweep options in the tripod and double shin sweep follow a very informative chapter on leg placement, which outlines how to retain inside position when the top persons trying to establish a straight or cross hamstring passing checkpoint.

Part 4 – Butterfly Ashi

The most creative and innovative aspect of this Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD (and this is coming from a leg locker with a 10-year pedigree of chasing feet) is the fourth volume. The butterfly Ashi is a hybrid position, which Bodoni is taking to new heights as his own specialty.

While the position has a ton to offer, he only touches on the most crucial aspects in this part, covering how to switch between the legs and set up a few more sweeps marking the halfway point of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD.

Part 5 – Countering Top Maneuvers

The second most useful volume in the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD, which I found to be super rich with useful information. Namely, in this one Bodoni deconstructs what the top players are usually trying to do, and how to turn the tables before they even begin establishing their game.

Over the course of 40 minutes, Giancarlo goes over applications and modifications of the Ashi Garami when the top person changes levels, as well as how to turn their backsteps and shin pin passes into leg lock-rich traps.

Part 6 – Ashi Garami From Top

Another highly useful portion of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD, particularly to those that compete a lot in No-Gi. Everyone who has ever been caught in a footsie battle knows how frustrating it can be until the lone person decides to get the top position – and Bodoni shows how to be that person.

Of course, he demonstrates not just how to get on top efficiently, but also be safe from Ashi Garami attacks as well. And, since this is an Ashi instructional, Bodoni also shares some cool leg lock finishes from the top, featuring both belly down and belly up positioning.

Part 7 – Dealing with Defenses

the one thing that every seasoned leg locker is mostly battling these days is awareness. As leg locks became a staple of grappling, everyone started practicing and defending them. While Bodoni’s instructions of Kuzushi, connections, sweeps, and transitions can get you Into Ashi, finishing requires just as much work, if not more.

This portion of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD explains how to keep the pressure on as you transition different Ashi Garami positions and how to interchange linear and twisting leg locks for maximum efficiency.

Part 8 – Baiting and Transitions

The final part of the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD goes over the key transitions between Ashi Garami attacks. Bodoni shares a lot of baiting tactics here, that misdirect your opponent as you hunt for stronger Ashi positions and devastating finishes without easing off.

I love the tactic of coming up to improve connection before heading back to the mats for optimal finishing mechanics. A fine knee bar brings this incredible Giancarlo Bodoni No-Gi instructional to an end.

A Gateway To Attacking From Guard

The Ashi Garami is no longer a position that only specialists consider worthy of exploring. It also transcends the entire Gi and No-Gi BJJ debate, as it is extremely applicable to both. Don’t get me wrong, you can still play footsie as much as you want and the Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD is definitely going to put you ahead of the curve.

However, you will also benefit from this instructional as a Gi fighter who does not use leg locks and likes to win on points. The concept of using Ashi to play guard changes the landscape of the bottom Jiu-jitsu game.

The fact is that sweeps are an integral part of the Danaher Ashi Garmi system, as he emphasizes breaking the opponent down to a hip before setting up finishes. Well, that breakdown is essentially a sweep, with all that’s missing is gaining top position.

Furthermore, sweeping from different Ashi Garami positions also opens up new passing positions to consider, as it will place you in a position you don’t usually end up in during passing. Not to mention how effective it is at helping you recognize both leg lock and sweep threats very early on.

Chase Efficiency!

If there is one theme that runs throughout this Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami Giancarlo Bodoni DVD it is that you need to be efficient with everything you do. Leg locks are not working from the Ashi Garmi? Sweep and get to the top then. You can always go back and finish from improved positions.

This is just one of the key aspects that Bodoni shares in his Efficiently Executing Ashi Garami DVD. The instructional is truly one of the best video learning resources I’ve seen in BJJ in 2024 and deserves to be in your collection since it teaches so much more than just leg locks.

Are you trying to figure out how to escape the triangle choke in BJJ? Why merely escape? Instead, you could opt to use a proven Garry Tonon tactic and apply a triangle escape to leg lock combo that catches your opponents by surprise.

Moreover, after you take a look at the dissected, step-by-step instructions on how to perform this BJJ triangle escape to a leg lock, you’ll gain an understanding of how the best grapplers bind together submissions and escapes. This is why Tonon has such courage to go for crazy things at the highest level – he can escape submission if it fails!

Why Watch Garry Tonon?

Garry Tonon, dubbed “The Lion Killer” is one of the most recognizable names associated with John Danaher and his Death Squad. He’s a multiple World No-Gi & Pan Ams No-Gi Champion, and gunning for his first-ever ADCC title again in 2024. He’s simply one of the best No-Gi BJJ practitioners in the world at specializing in submissions and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

His specialist style of Jiu-Jitsu has benefited Garry enormously in MMA. It’s best defined as relentless submission hunting mixed with scramble initiation. It has helped Garry achieve a 9-1 record in MMA, fighting under the ONE FC banner.

With such a style, though, the art of escape gets sharpened daily. Garry’s style has landed him in some difficult situations such as losing to Tye Ruotolo and Sean McNally. Garry does have an incredibly effective escapes system, built upon his submission-hunting prowess.

Garry is hunting for submissions all the time and he also gets himself into bad positions probably more often than anyone else, but ends up getting out and tapping more people than he taps to. We’ll take a look at how you can integrate his tactics into your game today.

Triangle escape to leg lock finish by Garry Tonon

Turning Escapes into Attacks

Whenever you do just one thing in BJJ, you set yourself up for failure. For example, trying to hold mount using everything you know, even against a first–day student is eventually going to fail – they’ll find a way out, even if it is by pure luck.

Threatening submissions while you try to retain mount, such as the Americana will most likely not end up with you tapping the bottom person. However, keeping them busy with arm lock defense means you can easily stay in the mount, which is a smart and efficient tactic to win matches.

Well, you can reverse-engineer this entire approach to use when you’re escaping as well. In fact, the most success I’ve had with escapes is when I wasn’t trying to get out of bad spots but rather hunted for counter-submissions. The D’arce choke off a Ghost escape and the Squirrel Lock Kimura comes to mind.

There are plenty of similar examples of how you can use submission threats to get out of escapes or turn escapes into submission attacks halfway through when the opponent is busy trying to keep a hold of you. You can be as creative as you want as long as you set up everything you do as at least a dilemma.

Technique Breakdown: Garry Tonon Triangle Escape To Leg Lock Finish

Triangle chokes are very tricky to get out of. It is not defending them that gets you in trouble, though, as much as the final stages of escaping do, when a lot of different attacking follow-ups open up to your opponent.

One way of countering these is to go for a counter yourself, well before such opportunities present themselves to your opponent. Here Garry Tonon shows a pretty slick triangle escape to leg lock combo that will catch anyone by surprise.

Moreover, he has created plenty of additional options to finish his opponent after he escapes toward Ashi. Let’s break down the entire sequence, along with the foundational idea behind it:

Keypoint 1: Posture is not Enough

While Garry agrees that posture is important during any BJJ triangle escape, he states that not jsut any posturing is going to help you. Instead of trying to pull up with your neck, focus on wedging your hips underneath the opponent’s hips. This soveling motion will provide you with all the posture you need to fend off the choke, as you set up your way out.

Keypoint 2: Don’t Go Forward, Go Up

Another key aspect of posture during a triangle escape from guard is getting up to your feet. Many people take the easy route of trying to stack the bottom person by leaning forward. This is a trap that only gets you deeper into the triangle, or potentially in a mounted triangle choke.

Instead, focus on standing straight up. Stepping to the side of your trapped arm is going to provide you with both the drive and the essential angle to stand up while not straining your neck and look to set up your triangle escape to leg lock combo.

Keypoint 3: Angle for the Step Over

We used to learn the basic triangle defense as jsut finding a way to sit back and throw both legs over the opponent’s belly. This still works, but Garry dissects the “just find a way to stand up” part in a very methodical way.

Yes, his route is longer. and does not employ both legs, which is a lot more effective, believe it or not. Once up, he steps over on the side of his trapped arm, and carefully sits back rather than throw himself on the mats. This latter is only going to pull the bottom person on top of you.

Keypoint 4: Open the Legs

A plus side of Carfull descending to the mats in a controlled fashion is that the opponent’s legs are still closed in the triangle. No this is not a bad thing, as now you can easily open them up while immediately gaining control over them.

This step is crucial as this is when your opponent will be looking for follow-ups since the triangle cannot work anymore. Even if you don’t open the legs immediately, use your free arm to control the one on your neck, as it will buy you all the time you need to set up Ashi Garami.

Keypoint 5: But-to-Butt

The final aspect of this Garry Tonon triangle escape to leg lock combo is to remember that your butt needs to stay close to the opponent’s butt at all times. This is the first step we went over (wedging) and still makes or breaks this sequence.

Being butt-to-butt means you can work towards any Ashi Garami configuration that you want. In fact, Garry offers two options as a way to tap your opponent:

  1. Outside Hell Hook: Immediately available off this modified staple BJJ triangle escape is the Game Over leg locking position, a.k.a. the Sambo Knot. Garry demonstrates an outside heel hook but you can go for a bunch of different locks from there.
  2. Straight Ankle Lock: For the PG version that those IBJJF leg lockers are after, Tonon provides an alternative finishing, utilizing the most powerful version of a straight ankle lock – the belly-down finish.

How to Apply Submissions to All Your BJJ Escapes

Garry’s incredible rendition of a triangle escape to leg lock, as effective as it is to immediately add to your game, is a lot more than jsut a copy-paste tactic. It provides you with an entirely differnet way of thinking about escapes, as the means not just to get out, but to win.

This does not mean that you do not need to practice complete escapes any longer. On the contrary, you need to research and dissect them even more, so that you’re able to pinpoint the best time for transition into a counter as opposed to jsut running back to safety. it wil undoubtedly turn you into a true high-level grappling competitor!

If you’re interested in all kinds of escapes from numerous submissions make sure to check out Tom DeBlass’s DVD instructional. It’s called Submission Escapes! It can really improve your escape skills. And when we talk about Tom DeBlass, he’s the guy who hasn’t submitted to competition for more than 10 years.

Not even mention that Tom DeBlass’s guard is almost impossible to pass. He’s been working on it for the last 15 years and it’s nearly perfect. Check Tom DeBlass’ Half Guard DVD Instructional named Half Domination

There is also another Great Escape Instructional from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Legend Dean Lister. He’s very well known for his leg locks and intentionally giving legs to people so he could defend them and submit them. He’s the guy who inspired John Danaher with his legendary sentence “Why would you ignore 50% of the human body”. Dean Lister gathered all of his best escapes and put them in this instructional.

It’s called Worry-Free Escapes. And it’s something that will get your escapes to another level. And once you’re not afraid of being submitted you’re more offensive and that can be the game changer in your BJJ. So, check out the technique List and Dean Lister’s Worry-Free Escapes Instructional

Wrist Locks – The Great Divider

Wrist locks are often frowned upon in BJJ, but there is no real reason to do so. Yeah, they are sneaky, and they are effective, but that doesn’t mean we stop using them just because they work. Quite the dichotomy right there.

The use of wrist locks should, in my opinion, be encouraged in our sport, as they are often overlooked, and lead to complacency that ends up costing you matches. And no, shrugging off a submission loss to a wrist lock as a fluke is not the way to cope with these arm locks.

At the end of the day, we need to use everything at our disposal to be effective within the bounds of competitive Jiu-Jitsu. Unless we treat wrist locks seriously, we just create another boogey submission, as the Gracies did with leg locks, effectively forcing them underground. if history has taught us anything, that will come to bite us in the a$$.

One step in embracing wrist locks, especially if you’ve never considered them before, is the Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD. It explains them better than any pure BJJ grappler ever could.

A Wrist Lock Master With a Peculiar Resume

I guess we can call all those who train BJJ, myself included, the snobs of the martial arts world. Knowing something is effective, fun, and difficult makes us think we’re involved in something that is better than most other martial arts. Given the standards, most of the time it is, but that doesn’t mean other martial arts have nothing to contribute that’ll make us better at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Every now and again a person with a very long and accomplished traditional martial arts background in BJJ goes through the ranks and ends up developing some mixture of BJJ and other martial arts that seems to be ultra-effective, at least for themselves. It is not much unlike the origin story of BJJ. The challenge, however, is how to have it work for others as well.

Scott Taylor, a fifth-degree black belt in Kumo Jiu-Jitsu (a traditional variation) as well as a Tae Kwon Do and BJJ black belt. That is an impressive blend of credentials, which also contributed to Scott’s specialization of one particular aspect of submission grappling – wristlocks.

Having trained with the likes of GSP, Nick Maynard, Jo Stevenson, and Brendon Vera surely helped Scott weed out the useless form of what really works. He now attempts to pass on his decades’ worth of knowledge to the BJJ world via the Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD.

Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD Review

This highly amusing 2-hour long Gi instructional features 3 different volumes focusing on very effective and no less brutal wrist lock finishes from every position. The Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD relies heavily on the use of lapels to blend in BJJ and traditional Jiu-Jitsu attacks into a very formidable system.

Part 1 – Closed Guard Wrist Locks

As Scott opens his introduction, he talks a bit about his background which actually provides a lot of credibility given the subject. Why he wears a black and red coral belt is beyond me, though.

the initial focus is on the closed guard, with the entire first volume of the Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD addressing different setups and finishes from the closed guard. There are lots of Japanese names assigned to the different wrist locks, which are not unknown to those who’ve practiced Aikido and traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

Taylor uses the lapels heavily when setting his wrist lock up, combining them with other BJJ tactics, such as sweeps that land you in the mount, with the threats of wrist lock finishes still active. Scott also provides a blueprint for connecting wrist locks to other guard submissions and transitions.

Part 2 – Hidden Wrist Lock Attacks

The second portion of the Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD is the one I enjoyed the most. It contains wrist locks which I tend to use (although I go for them very rarely).

Most of these become available as opponents defend other stuff you’re throwing at them, such as submissions or heavy positional pins. For example, Scott demonstrates a coo variation to a wristlock used when an opponent is defending an armbar, on top of plenty of surprising side control and mount options.

The centerpiece of this volume is a couple of chapters addressing the biceps wrist lock, particularly the scarf modification. There is also a cool variation of the old ‘answering the telephone’ counter to an arm triangle choke defense.

Part 3 – Wrist Locks From Everywhere

As we arrive at the final part of the Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD, we get access to details on setting up sneaky wrist locks from literally anywhere. The opening chapters in this part focus on open guard setups, before going on to explore more versatile options.

I really enjoyed the D’arce choke wrist lock combo, as well as the one that helps you get out of side control, unless the top person decides to tap. Taylor also has a few more defensive uses of wrist locks, wrapping up with a finish from the turtle position.

How Wrist Locks Improve Your BJJ Game

Knowing what you now know about the versatility of wrist locks from our Lose Friends Through Wrist Locks Scott Taylor DVD review, you must be thinking about how you can integrate wrist locks into your game. It is a lot easier than it seems:

  • Pins – Writ locks from any top pin position are made easy by the fact that you only need to place your weight correctly, and the bottom person cannot defend them. They’re particularly effective when you introduce lapels to trap the wrist.
  • Submissions – On top of being a highly viable and available submission on their own, wrist locks perfectly complement all other submissions in BJJ. Most people defend heavily by relying on their arms, which always expose them to wrist locks.
  • Escapes – One of the crucial aspects of creating space with wrist locks is their effectiveness in escaping. Pain is the best motivator for someone to ease off the pressure, and as people forget their arms all over the place, an easy shortcut to creating defensive space.
  • Standing – Stopping just short of Aikido, wristlocks are huge at forcing people to move in the direction you want them to while placing their focus on the pain in their wrist. This allows you to set up any takedown you desire.

The above are just a few examples of how wrist locks can feature in your BJJ game as much more than simply a submission move. They create space, which is integral to effectively doing Jiu-Jitsu, while they cause panic and disarray among opponents on account of how painful they are.

In the BJJ world, you have a huge selection of visually attractive moves to choose from. You can spin, invert, fly, or roll your way into a bunch of different positions or submissions, looking to surprise your opponents. The BJJ Helicopter choke falls within that category.

However, there is an exception to the Helicopter choke that does not apply to most of the above-mentioned flashy moves. Unlike most of them, the choke we’re about to deconstruct today has the potential to work against opponents of any size and experience and won’t land you in trouble if you mess it up. Let’s explain how it all works.

Attacking the Modern BJJ Turtle

The turtle has always been the go-to defense for Judokas but it never really made too much sense for me. Fast forward to the mid-2010s and a modern system of BJJ defense emerged, turning the turtle into the one position that could block all BJJ attacks and open up escapes or counters.

So, how do you now attack a position designed to repel attacks? The main use is that the harder you try to break it down, the more you sacrifice your balance, giving away attachments and options for the bottom person to get out.

Since grabbing underneath the armpit is not an option anymore against any experienced turtle player, you’re left with destabilizing the turtle itself, which is the weakest point of the position. The best way to achieve a turtle breakdown is to target either end of the turtle – the legs or the neck.

When you are grappling with the Gi, the neck becomes your primary target. While attacking with the likes of the clock choke and the helicopter choke might not yield a submission outcome, you will destroy the turtle and set yourself up to have more success with your attacking game. Unless you let the opponent turtle up again.

The BJJ Turtle Position

Rolling Gi Chokes: A Warning

The BJJ Helicopter choke is part of the rolling chokes family, and whenever a world like rolling, spinning, or flying precedes a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu move, you should exercise caution with it. It has as much to do with your safety as that of your opponent or training partner.

With rolling chokes, there is a point during the drop section of your roll when you have no control over your body. This is the time when you’re past the highest point of the roll and all you can do is let gravity take you to the mats. In ideal circumstances, this is a large reason behind the success of rolling chokes.

In the case of the Helicopter choke, though, you should be careful as this means all your weight is essentially going to drop-hang off the opponent’s neck. Since the Gi is involved, this might result in neck muscle or even spinal injuries before any choking mechanics start to apply.

Since there is no real way of dropping safely while executing a rolling choke, keep in mind that you don’t have to clamp on your grips as if your life depends on it and you should be ready to let go in case you feel that the opponent’s body positioning is not where you expect them to land, or they tap verbally or in a panicked way.

Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Helicopter Choke

The BJJ Helicopter choke is essentially a clock choke done in a way that locks the opponent’s head in place so that they can’t turn to the side and sneak out as they usually do versus clock chokes.

The absolute prerequisite of performing this choke is to establish a thumb-inside grip on the far side of the opponent’s collar while they are turtled up. As you’ll see later, there are ways to use the choke outside of the turtle position, but for learning purposes, it is best if we stick to it.

Grip Positioning

The placement of the choking arm is across a turtled-up opponent’s neck, while you’re positioned to the side. Reaching underneath the chin is not going to be resistance-free, which is why you only need to thread your thumb inside the opponent’s collar.

Your other arm can reinforce the position by grabbing the opponent’s pants on the near side. This way, you can still move freely to eventually set up the helicopter choke while preventing the bottom person from rolling out.

The Arm Post Checkpoint

Getting the Helicopter choke grips in usually has you in a kneeling or half-kneeling position to the side of your opponent. In order to enter the Helicopter choke you’ll need to pop up to standing, which will create space that the opponent can use.

While you should not linger in the standing portion of the choke setup, it actually helps the surprise factor as the opponent wonders why the weight is suddenly off. To ensure you can enter the choke or other follow-ups, you need to post the palm of the hand that held the pants on the opponent’s back.

The Leg Swing

The crucial moment in making the Helicopter choke work and preventing you from completely conceding the bottom position is the leg swing, also known as the stepover. This motion brings the power of your leg muscles into play, as you use the leg that is closer to the opponent to reinforce the choking arm as well as destroy any hopes of posturing up.

In fact, the arm post checkpoint serves as a power source to launch the step over, as you throw your nearside leg over the opponent’s body, trying to place the foot next to their head on the same side as the rest of your body.

This motion where you wrap your leg around your choking arm also activates the rolling motion, and the leg wedges deeper behind the neck as you start to drop to the mats.

Establishing an Underhook

Finally, as you allow the leg swing to take you over the opponent, your goal is to use the free arm, which is the one that is posted on their back to grab an underhook on the far side as you go through the rolling motion.

This aspect of the choke might not be available always, in which case, you should grab whatever you can get a hold of to solidify your position. However, once you get comfortable with the rolling helicopter choke, you’ll find it easy to sneak in an underhook control that further blocks the opponent from moving.

Choke-wise, there is no real need to squeeze anything as the roll and final landing position put immense pressure on the neck via the collars. If you need more pressure, extend the leg that is wedged behind the arm to finish off stubborn opponents.

A Couple Of BJJ Helicopter Choke Variations

Now that you know how to do the Helicopter choke against a turtled-up opponent, let’s look at a few other setups of the choke that are going to catch the eye of experienced grapplers a bit more.

Helicopter Choke From the Back

As an alternative to classic choke attacks from the back, you could opt for the Helicopter choke if you set everything up correctly. The main thing to pay attention to is that you will need to relinquish your hooks in order to get to the choke.

This variation also begins with a tight thumb-in grip on the collar, however, this time  you set it up from the back just like you’d do for a bow and arrow choke. Since you don’t need hooks, all it takes is standing up however slightly you need to execute the leg swing.

In this instance, the choke is not a rolling one but rather a falling one, and instead of underhooking the arm on the far side, you’re scooping up the near side knee, again, like in a bow and arrow choke finish.

Judo Style Helicopter Choke Entry form Throws

This variation of the Helicopter choke setup is the one that works the best out of everything in this article. The reason for this is that you set it up during a transition as you attempt a throw or a pass and the opponent decides to turtle up.

Once again, nothing happens without the grips, and you have to have the collar control to set this one up. That said, whenever an opponent turns to enter the turtle, you get your cue to go for the leg swing, allowing you to enter into the choke tightly with a high percentage of success.

The Clock Choke

Finally, we have to pay homage to the predecessor of the Helicopter choke which is the clock choke. This choke has put many people to sleep on account of the fact that you don’t have to use hooks to finish it and most people do not perceive the danger until it is too late.

Finishing the clock choke only requires the thumb-in grip and does not involve standing or rolling. Simply put, you grab the collar, place the weight of your shoulder on the opponent’s back, right below their neck and you start circling, be it clockwise or counterclockwise in the direction of their head.

Chopper Away!

Is the Helicopter choke enough to end all your turtle trouble while you’re rolling or competing in Gi Jiu-Jitsu? Of course not. However, it does present a very viable solution to help you break down the turtle and even maybe sneak in a submission while you are at it.

If you opt to use the choke during transitions through, particularly when you’re using collar-based takedown systems or passes, you open the door to a very powerful finish that often comes underestimated on account of its somewhat acrobatic nature. But, if it’s not flashy it’s not really worth doing, is it?

Where Do Catch Wrestling Submissions Fit in BJJ?

Catch wrestling is a grappling sport that does not get the recognition it deserves, It was one of the things that Maeada infused heavily into his blend of Judo that later became BJJ. Due to a host of different reasons, the sport never caught on at the level of Judo, BJJ, or Wrestling.

That, however, does not mean that we have nothing to learn from it. On the contrary, if wrestling has been fueling BJJ for the past 5-6 years, then imagine what the submission-heavy version of wrestling has to offer. So, jumping on the catch wrestling bandwagon early is a great way of ensuring you are among the first to reap the rewards.

Jsut to be completely clear I am not advocating for switching out most of BJJ for catch wrestling and hoping it will all work under BJJ rules. Instead, look for inspiration, or better yet, practical modifications to fine-tune and amp up your submissions so that tapping out higher belts is no longer something that happens once a year.

A great example is the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD. It reflects on the early use of a move dubbed “the double wrist lock” in catch wrestling, which happens to be almost the same as the Kimura in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Definitely worth exploring.

Snake Pit Instructor and BJJ Black Belt Joel Bane

The Snake Pit USA. Mixed Martial Arts Academy is one of the most popular combat sports hubs in the world, with a system built on the foundation of catch wrestling. In a quest to produce the best grappling for practical uses, Snake Pit also heavily includes BJJ in their system, under the tutelage of Rigan Machado.

Joel Bane is the man who made it all happen – he is the Snake Pit founder and head instructor. He got his black belt from Rigan Machado and currently holds the rank of 3rd Degree. He also has a black belt in Luta Livre under the legendary Hugo Duarte.

Bane has spent a lifetime in grappling martial arts, training diligently in everything from Judo and BJJ to Catch Wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. He has 27 years’ worth of grappling experience to pick from when he is teaching,  which is clearly visible in the structure and style he brings to his Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD.

Full Review: Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD

The Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD is a long grappling instructional, consisting of 8 parts. Each part has a different duration, but the total length of the material comes up to just under 6 hours, which is a lot in terms of grappling information.

Part 1 – The True Double Wrist Lock

Joel does a great job when starting this instructional in delivering a clear and concise definition of what the double wristlock is in wrestling, its origins, and how it compares to the Kimura we use in BJJ. Simply put, he shows how the double wristlock led to the development of the Kimura over the years.

He also shares some crucial differences between the catch wrestling version of the shoulder lock and the BJJ iteration. To begin with, he does an overview of how you can make takedowns stronger by threatening with the double writs lock, using it to pivot kick over, and even counter common takedowns.

Part 2 – Reverse Double Wrist Lock

In the second part of the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD, the action still remains standing for the most part. However, the version of the shoulder lock changes into something we need to use more in BJJ – the reverse double wristlock.

In this 27-minute long volume, Joel addresses some pretty acrobatic moves on the feet involving reverse double wrist lock counter takedowns. The one I have to single out is the cement mixer, something that has worked for me in the past. Bane’s fireman carry counter is also worth exploring further.

Part 3 – Side Control Set Ups

The third volume of this Joel Bane BJJ is when the action hits the ground, with top side control getting all the attention. Joel p[perfectly blends BJJ and Catch Wrestling to simplify the methodology behind the best grips and angles for finishing Kimuras.

He also goes over several alternative finishes while holding on to the double writs lock, such as the scissor choke, neck cranks, and key locks. I loved the fact that he turns the tables at the end, showing how to counter and escape the double wrist lock from bottom side control.

Part 4 – The Cobra Clutch

This portion of the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD shows a version of the double wristlock that is pure catch wrestling. The Cobra Clutch is essentially a choke done from a modified Gift Wrap position, which works way better than anything BJJ has to offer.

In addition to the Cobra Clutch, this volume has only one other chapter which explains how to take the scissor choke to new torturous heights by including a nasty neck crank and evil toe hold into the mix.

Part 5 – Double Wrist Lock Vs Turtle

As we pass the halfway point of this very informative KLimura-focused instructional, we start getting to some aspects that are absolutely crucial in breaking down the modern BJJ turtle. Since the latest developments in turtle defense are wrestling-inspired, it makes sense to attack with catch wrestling moves.

To that extent, Joel explains how you can set up the double wristlock from chicken wing control and use it to ride your opponent, destroying their turtle completely. As you probably expected, there are a lot of rolling attacks in this part, but all of them are simple and highly effective, as opposed to complicated BJJ maneuvers.

Part 6 – Hammerlocks

A staple of wrestling and catch wrestling, hammerlocks do not get much love in modern grappling. While they are never going to rise to the efficiency of heel hooks they do come in useful, and Bane does them justice.

An entire 40-minute long part of the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD is dedicated to the intricate interplay between the double wrist lock and hammerlocks, and how they make each other better. Bane includes both top and bottom combinations featuring hammerlock and Kimuras.

Part 7 – Double Wrist Lock From Bottom Turtle

The penultimate volume of the double wristlock Joel Bane DVD focuses on what I think is the most useful aspect of this system for BJJ grapplers – bottom turtle attacks. You can use Joel’s sneaky counters to set it up from a position most perceive as defensive, catching everyone by surprise.

Bane begins by teaching how to properly execute the sit-out and the angles you need to chase to make the double wristlock available. Once locked he takes us through a series of mat returns, flips, and trips that land you on top and allow you to apply all offensive aspects of the position that were already covered.

Part 8 – Mount Attacks

The final part of the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD offers a real treat to grapplers who would like to diversify their arm-locking attacks from the mount. In this volume, Bane goes over what we know in BJJ as the Monoplata, but injects Vitor Bellfort-levels of TRT into it.

There are several direct Kimura-like finishes offered by Joel, along with a few very unexpected bonus submissions and pins. just like with side control, Bane also offers a way out when you’re on the receiving end of the double wristlock, but I wouldn’t bet on it much.

Building A Kimura-Based Game

The Kimura trap is the perfect example of how you can base your entire game on one position that acts as a pin, a posture break, and a submission at the same time. Versatile moves such as this are not too common in BJJ and when you get the chance to expand upon the possibilities offered by one of them it is smart to consider it.

When I teach the Kimura in my gym, finishing the Kimura comes last. Instead, I have people explore what they can do without letting go of the grip. If you just enter a figure four (a.k.a. Kimura) grip from a set position, such as topside control, and decide to just go for a round of rolling without letting it go you’ll discover the potential it has.

You can easily apply the same approach to other positions such as guards, passing, standing, and even escaping. Grab onto a Kimura and see where it leads you. This entire system has been inspired by wrestling and the heavy use of the double wristlock to get anything but a submission, given the rules.

You can get everything you will ever need to know about the catch wrestling double wristlock in the Oops, I’ve Got Your Shoulder Joel Bane DVD. Do not hesitate to grab this one!

Where Do Leg Locks Fit in Modern BJJ?

A question I really can’t answer precisely, to be honest. I was one of the early adopters of the leg lock game, which came as a godsend to smaller framed grapplers such as myself. Fast forward about a decade since Eddie Cummings tore through everyone and leg locks are now something I teach in my kid’s class.

People who witnessed the rise of leg locks through the Danaher system have a somewhat distorted view of how they work these days. The Ashi Garami approach changed BJJ for good, which is demonstrated in the diversity of the leg lock game since those early days. Now, people use all kinds of leg lock modifications left and right, but that inclusion comes at a cost.

While Danaher’s system was complex, it was proven to work on the biggest of stages, given enough time spent practicing and perfecting it. The modifications that emerge now, some 10 years later, are mostly weird stuff that works once or twice, and only if your build is similar to the person demonstrating them.

The leg lockers who have provided legitimate variations on the subject, such as Charles Harriott, Lachlan Giles, and Robert Degle, are few and far between. So if you’re thinking about becoming a leg locker, or you’re dusting off your rusty leg locking skills, the best approach is to find what works at the highest levels of modern BJJ and try to replicate that.

In other words, when a resource such as the Owen Jones BJJ DVD Leg Locks For Short Kings, which features an up-and-coming prodigy that beat everyone at the ADCC trials pops up, you need to grab and analyze it as soon as possible.

Up And Coming Brown Belt Owen Jones

Owen Jones might not be a name you instantly recognize if you’re not really into the competitive BJJ scene. He is a brown belt under David Cartwright-Koza, the head coach of Apex BJJ. If you were watching the ADCC European Trials in 2023, you saw Owen tear through the -66 kg division, submitting everyone and earning his brown belt on the spot.

Aged only 19, sharing the accolade of the youngest ADCC trials winner with Jozef Chen, Owen beat names such as Robert Degle and Ashley Williams on his way to the ADCC trials podium. The UK prodigy caught everyone’s attention with his aggressive and submission-oriented game.

At the trials, he acted as if the highly competitive setting of the qualifiers for the biggest BJJ competition in the world was his natural environment. He talked to the crowd, tested the opponent’s concerns, and delivered a beautiful mix of leg locks and inversions to announce that there is a new up-and-comer in the lightweight No-Gi scene.

You can now check out some of his favorite leg lock stuff in the Owen Jones BJJ DVD titled Leg Locks For Short Kings.

Full Review: Leg Locks for Short Kings Owen Jones BJJ DVD

In this modern Leg Locks Owen Jones DVD, you get just under 2 hours of quality material that shows how young Owen managed to beat seasoned leg lockers by modifying the systems already established in BJJ. There are three volumes in this Owen Jones BJJ DVD each covering a different crucial aspect of the game, and all tied in together in a very methodical and easy-to-follow way.

Part 1 – Modern Leg Lock Game Essentials

As the Leg Locks For Short Kings Owen Jones BJJ DVD kicks off, Jones dedicates the better part of half an hour to the principles he uses to set up his highly potent game. Unlike most modern coaches, the youngster seems to favor simplicity and a straightforward but effective approach.

According to Owen, the key thing when you’re hunting for leg locks is how you attach yourself to the leg. He offers several different positions you can use as efficient leg locking attachments, some outside of what most leg lockers grasp as effective.

The second principle in Owen Jones’ leg lock game is to make the opponent weak before you go for the finish. He achieves this by off-balancing them, which he does not only when opponents are standing but also on the mats. he equates lack of balance to weak resistance, allowing him to finish so effectively.

Part 2 – Finishing Leg Locks

The art of finishing leg locks, even from a strong Ashi Garami has always ended up clinging on whether or not you can dig up the ankle, heel, foot, or knee to apply the breaking mechanics. Owen simplifies that in his instructional, offering variations to the finishes, most leg lockers use.

After going through the chapters on the Aoki lock finish, the Trne locks, and the modified toe hold, it is clear why Owen was able to outperform and beat seasoned leg lockers such as Robert Degle during his 2023 ADCC Trials title run. He also connects all his modified finishes beautifully to create a cohesive attacking system.

Heel hooks details for an outside and inside finish, as well as interesting modifications to the straight ankle lock also feature in this part of the Owen Jones BJJ DVD Leg Locks For Short Kings.

Part 3 – Ashi Transitions

During the final 30 minutes of the Leg Locks For Short KingsOwen Jones BJJ DVD, the focus shifts from finishing to switching between the positions that allow you to get the all-important tap.

Most of Jones’ efforts are geared towards the outside Ashi which he prefers, and he offers different ways into it which include the K-Guard, half guard, and even the De la Riva, which is unusual for a leg locker.

He also shares the interplay between sweeps and entries to leg locking positions, using BJJ fundamentals such as the scissor sweep to reiterate his point. He also provides a blueprint for seamlessly transitioning between the outside ashi and the Saddle position, wrapping up with a set of game-based sparring ideas, rooted in the ecological approach of training which is growing in popularity these days.

Leg Locks: A Solution For Short Folks

The reason I started using leg locks back in 2014 (God, that makes me feel old) was that I am a smaller framed grappler and I don’t have much reach with my extremities. Plus, back then I liked to lift weights, so seeing Toquinho a.k.a. Rousimar Palhares scare the living daylight out of everyone with leg locks made shifting to the then “dark side” a no-brainer.

To this day, regardless of which leg locking system you’re using, leg locks remain the biggest equalizer you have in Jiu-Jitsu. Wrestlers and Judokas are scared form them like Toquinho’s UFC opponents, and those Gi-only grapplers tend to tap even if you approach an Ashi Garami.

At the end of the day, if you are small, older, or a lonely female having to grapple a room full of competitive males, leg locks provide a way to dominate everyone. It goes without saying that longer-limbed BJJ practitioners can also be great leg lockers, but there is something that makes lower body submissions the bread and butter method of tapping out people when you’re built like a T-Rex.

That makes this Owen Jones BJJ DVD perfectly titled: “Leg Locks For Short Kings”. To be honest, it really delivers on the quality of material that will make you a ruler of the mats in your gym, and perhaps even the local competition scene.

The Most Powerful Weapon In BJJ

What is the best submission in BJJ? You’ll get as many different answers to this question as there are submissions, but at the end of the day, there is only one category of finishes that universally works against anyone – chokes.

Whether you call them chokes, strangles, or you give them some obscure Japanese term, the end result is going to be the same – people tap. The alternative is going to sleep, and given that no person can be immune to this, no matter how big, strong, or experienced they are, the usual resolution of a successful choke comes as a tap.

At the end of the day, you can spin under for leg locks or try and play by prison rules and hunt for sneaky wrist locks all you want, but when push comes to shove, you’ll likely resort to choking someone out. Chojkes are like the closed guard – you might think they’re boring sometimes, but you always come back to use them every time you roll or compete.

In that regard, a truly unique aspect of BJJ (and Judo, to some extent), is the fact that you can multiply the effectiveness of many choking options in your arsenal using the Gi. Whether it is your own or the opponent’s, once you sink in a deep Gi choke it is all over. The Chokes and More Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD focuses on this particular aspect of strangling people in grappling.

Submission Specialis Miko Hytonen

Miko Hytonen is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Santeri Lilius and is one of the more entertaining figures in the BJJ World. A self-proclaimed tattoo addict, as much as he is addicted to grappling, Miko has always been the guy who goes for the finish in every roll and match.

Submission specialists are not rare in modern Jiu-Jitsu, but those who are very effective in their efforts, such as Miko are not that easy to come by. Hytonen is not just efficient in finishing people with chokes, he is also very creative, modifying techniques and exploring new ways of strangling people on a daily basis.

Currently, he is a full-time BJJ instructor at Beach Front BJJ working alongside Eoghan O’Flanagan and Ashley Williams. With a lifetime of grappling behind him (started wrestling at age 4) Miko attributes BJJ to pulling him out of a slump of depression and laziness and giving his life a purpose.

In a never-ending quest to give back to the community, he now shares his tradecraft in the Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD Chokes and More Instructional, trying to impact other people’s lives.

Chokes and More: Full Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD Review

The Chokes and More Miko Hytonen DVD is a three-part instructional, featuring Gi chokes from a bunch of different positions. Miko is a  known choke specialist who spends almost two hours going over his favorite ways to strangle folks with their clothes, some of which are very creative and powerful:

Part 1 – High Percentage Gi Chokes

Straight off the bat, MIko goes into the essence of a choke John Danaher called the most powerful choke in BJJ – the bow and arrow. The first few chapters of the Chokes and More Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD explain how you can set the choke up from both sides of the back, finishing quickly and painfully.

Another staple of Gi chokes also makes an appearance here, with Hytonen deconstructing the Ezekiel choke from both back and front, and explaining its relation to the loop choke, another highly utilized choke among Gi grapplers. He concludes the opening act of his instructional with several brutal Krsa Gatame chokes, topping it all off with a selection of armbars.

Part 2 – A Set of Unusual Submissions

Going further, this Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD goes deep into the territory of grappling strangles, exploring some options you might not think of immediately (or at all). For example, the opening choke is an old-school catch wrestling torture move that I came by completely randomly years ago – the pillow choke. I strongly suggest you watch this chapter carefully.

Staying mostly inside control throughout this volume, Miko covers baseball bat choke grip variations and modifications, throwing in surprise subs such as biceps slicers and shoulder reaps along the way. The lapel Darce, a.k.a. Brabo choke marks the end of the second volume.

Part 3 – Creative Miko Hytonen Signature Strangles

Last but not least, Hytonen demonstrates some of his more creative choking methods that are a huge part of his game. This final part of the Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD goes over crowd pleasers such as the rolling loop choke, helicopter choke, and a series of turtle-breaking strangles, all revolving around the effective use of the Gi.

My personal favorite out of this volume, and a close second to the pillow choke when considering the entire Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD instructional is the chapter covering knee on belly. In it, Hytonen offers a brutal arm pull triangle finish that will get you hooked the moment you get your first tap.

How Chokes Make BJJ Easy

Seeing how chokes are the most effective grappling move available in combat sports and self-defense, spending time exploring how you can use them to improve your overall BJJ game is a very smart strategy for progress.

Namely, a choke is only going to work if you can figure out how to place a noose around the opponent’s neck, and more importantly, how to tighten it effectively. In the case of the Chokes and More Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD, the noose involved the Gi, but the same principle remains for No-Gi chokes. At the end of the day, you need to be able to hang your opponent using mechanics rather than simply squeezy and rely on muscle power.

This brings us to the inescapable fact that not all BJJ chokes are going to work 100%. That, however, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for them. The threat of a choke is a guaranteed way for you to pull off other key aspects of grappling such as takedowns, passing, sweeps, and positional retention.

Let’s use the mount for example. Threatening with a cross-collar choke, Ezekiel or guillotine is going to give your opponent an immediate threat to handle. While you may not be able to finish them off, you’ll never have to worry about them trying to bridge or slide out of your mount, giving you powerful positional dominance at all times.

Tighten The Noose!

I don’t doubt that you’re already very good in at least one choke that you rely upon heavily while rolling and competing. Exploring the contents of the Chokes and More Miko Hytonen BJJ DVD is only going to add fuel to your choking fire, expanding your options and turning you into a real threat for grapplers of all levels.

Simply put, the more versatile you become with chokes, the more dangerous you will be, which will bring out the worst in your opponents. If people fear you for a whole category of submissions, rather than just one move, it is going to be virtually impossible for them to stop you. Sounds attractive, doesn’t it?

The Art of BJJ Traps

I remember that the first time I realized the value of BJJ traps was in 2012 when I was watching Cyborg’s first Tornado Guard instructional. He was making an analogy for some move (I don’t remember specifically) about leaving seeds out for a bird and hiding behind a rock with a machine gun. Exactly how I picture Cyborg hunting.

Jokes aside, setting traps is the most effective way of setting up successfully pulling off grappling attacks. Instead of tightening with an obvious attack that your opponent can recognize and defend, you set up a series of attacks, for example, submissions, that they can’t see coming.

If you take a look at any top-level grappler you’ll see them use this strategy to do takedowns, sweeps, passes, submissions and every other attacking move there is. Even when Gordon Ryan predicts how he’ll finish an opponent, he uses trap setups to achieve his end goal.

This area of BJJ needs a lot more dedicated attention, and for the most part, that is down to instructors. If you feel like you’re lacking useful information on the subject from your instructor, turn toward the Keylock Trap System DVD By Vanessa Waltz. It will help a lot!

Gracie Barra Professor Vanessa Waltz

Vanessa Waltz is a first-degree black belt under her husband, GB Professor Brain Waltz. She is a true BJJ fanatic, completely devoted to her Colorado Springs gym, even to the point of training almost fully throughout her pregnancy!

She began BJJ in 2003 and ended up using it in a life-threatening situation just months later. It prompted her to really dedicate herself to the sport and she found her home with Gracie Barra in 2011 as a purple belt.

Apart from being a full-time instructor, as the co-owner of Gracie Bara Colorado Springs, along with her husband Brian Waltz, Vanessa also enjoys competing whenever she can, especially without the Gi. Style-wise, she is crafty and unorthodox, using mechanical advantages you likely never thought of before. The Keylock Trap System DVD By Vanessa Waltz is the perfect example.

Vanessa Waltz DVD: The Keylock Trap System Full Review

The Keylock Trap System DVD By Vanessa Waltz is a four-part BJJ instructional, with techniques demonstrated without the Gi. Everything laid out in the 2+ hours of material is directly applicable to Gi Jiu-Jitsu though, and the entire set is immensely useful for those who take BJJ competition seriously.

Part 1 – The Power of the Keylock

The Keylock Trap System Vanessa Waltz DVD begins with a short introduction that covers the basics of the Americana in terms of mechanical details. This is the last you’ll see of the ‘traditional’ Americana keylock in this instructional, as all following material is very creative and highly useful, building on those fundamental Americana principles.

Waltz presents how you can use the Americana position as a control position rather than just a flash submission that works opportunistically. Essentially, Vanessa sets up her Keylock Trap from the top, using it as a very effective pinning position from side control, mount, and knee on belly.

After laying down the basics, Vnaessa covers creative ways of recognizing keylock attacks everywhere, like during arm triangles, back attacks, and from the rear triangle position.

Part 2 – Setting The Keylock Trap

Once the basics are out of the way, it is time for attacks. Vanessa Waltz is extremely submission-oriented, looking for the tap everywhere, which is how I presume her system emerges. In this part of the Keylock Trap System DVD By Vanessa Waltz, we get to see a bunch of submission attacks that work together as a system.

Waltz starts with the Enigma Keylcok, offering shoulder and wristlock combos as she does. A particularly useful chapter is the one on separating the same side elbow during the setup of the trap system.

Both far and near side arm attacks feature in the form of shotgun armbars, and bent shoulder locks, mostly from the Kesa Gatame side control position. The volume ends with a few North-Soouth Keylock Trap options as well as more details on pinning the arm.

Part 3 – Keylock Trap Submissions

As this Vanessa Waltz DVD progresses, she presents the different positions you can transition between while retaining the Keylock Trap. This portion looks at attacking while switching between back and side control, effortlessly switching between chokes, such as the rear triangle, D’Arce, and North-South choke

This volume also features some of the most powerful submissions in the entire instructional, such as the Scorpion Deathlock, Honeyhole integrations, and the stirrup armbar. Mount options emerge towards the end of this volume, in the form of the Samurai Choke and mounted triangle.

Part 4 – Rear Attacks

Wrapping this incredibly creative and attack-oriented instructional up is a section on how to use the keylock Trap to control and submit from the back. The final part of the Keylock Trap System DVD By Vanessa Waltz shows some signature moves and ‘fancy’ transitions.

The Gift Wrap position, and how it works combined with the Keylock trap is undoubtedly the most important part of this volume. Among the chapters, Waltz also offers options on Cryangles (leg in triangles) from the cradle, setting up a No-Gi Ezekiel choke from the back as well as some smooth passing using the Keylock trap to set up Bolos.

Make Americanas Great Again

The Americana is a somewhat forgotten submission in BJJ these days. Thought of as the big guy/girl submission, we usually see it when larger people grapple with smaller ones, mostly due to how easy it is to get for the bigger person.

There were a few attempts by notable experimenters, such as Nino Schembri to introduce Americanas from bottom positions, but that did not pan out at all. So, for the most part, people only think of the Americana as a bent armlock to do from the mount or side control.

More experienced grapplers might use it as bait, to make sure they control these positions without too much effort, or to set up neighboring submissions, such as arm triangles or armbars. But that is not all the Americana can do for you.

Simply thinking about pinning the forearm of a bottom player to the mats, while their arm is bent at the elbow (the sharper the angle of the bend, the better) will open up a host of new opportunities for you, allowing you to transition between back, mount and side control at will.

Eddie Bravo had some strides in the field, during some of his early Monkey Mount work, and now, Vanessa Waltz has taken it upon herself to take the Americana further than anyone else before. Her Keylock Trap System DVD delivers as promised!

But, how do these opposing aspects of BJJ relate to one another, and how can you make the most out of understanding that relationship? These are the answers we’re looking for today.

Key Takeaways

  • 5-part No-Gi DVD with just under two and a half hours of game-changing concepts.
  • Covers the principles of offense and defense in BJJ from both top and bottom.
  • Defines and simplifies how and when you can turn defense into attacks effectively.

The Art of Attacking While Defending

Why do we defend in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? The short-term answers that most of you are probably thinking about are along the lines of “preventing submissions” and “recovering superior positions”. The long-term goal, most people are not connecting with defense is attacking.

defense serves as a means to help you establish positions you can launch attacks from while being safe from the opponent’s offense at the same time. Without defense, it would be a battle of attacks that will benefit whoever is in a superior position.

So, while the initial answers are correct, in a way, they all lead to the same goal – gaining an offensive edge over your opponent. Having an attacking mindset while you are defending bad positions and even submission attacks, means you are working towards a very clear goal and you’ll start recognizing options to launch those attacks much earlier than conventional Jiu-Jitsu behavior has taught you so far.

I’ve only seen sporadic mentions of this crucial concept in Jiu-Jitsu until now when an instructional directly covering the subject became available. Is the Chris Paines DVD: Turning Defensive Cycles into Offensive Cycles going to deliver, though? Check out the review that follows:

British BJJ Mastermind Chris Paines

I’ve had the pleasure of attending some of Chris Paines’ classes and I’ve always left with more ideas, material, and questions than a year of BJJ training. The man is simply not afraid to challenge all the stuff we’re taking for granted, in, what I interpret to be, an attempt to simplify Jiu-Jitsu.

Chirs is a fairly recent black belt, under defensive expert Priit Mihkelson, and you already probably know of him. A few years ago, one of Chris’ classes exploded in the BJJ World, available for free on YouTube and dubbed “How to defend everything“. And that is not even his best work!

Chris has been meticulously growing and breaking down Jiu-Jitsu since then, some of it available on his YouTube channel, but most of his most cohesive knowledge of grappling put into instructional format. The BJJ and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu black belt, one of the lead instructors at Fighting Fit in Staffordshire has several enticing and highly informative instructional to his name.

Turning BJJ Defense Into Offense is the latest Chris Paines DVD, and one that arrives with almost perfect timing, as I spend the last 9 months trying to teach this elusive skill to my advanced class.

Detailed Chris Paines DVD Review: Defense Into Offense

If you’ve ever seen Chris teach or you’ve watched any of his DVDs, you know that you’re in for an unorthodox experience. Chris likes to “dumb down” Jiu-Jitsu using lots of analogies you probably never thought of, which ends up being an extremely effective way of delivering key points to a large audience.

The Turning BJJ Defense Into Offense Chris Paines DVD is a 5-volume No-Gi BJJ instructional that features just under 2 and half hours of very informative and original material.

Part 1 – Why We Do Jiu-Jitsu

This incredible Chris Paines DVD opens up with an introduction, during which Chris decides to cover the subject of why we do BJJ from the perspective of gaining and taking away power. It is a slightly strange way of explaining the sport, but when you stop and think about it, it just makes so much sense!

Paines builds on his fundamental concept of Jiu-Jitsu, at least in the realm of defensive and offensive cycles, by addressing another staple of success in the Gentle Art – balance. He explains precisely what it is, how to keep a hold of it, and how to take it away from your opponent.

Part 2 – Guard Essentials

Defensive guards first emerged as a concept when Ryan Hall decided to issue a series of DVDs on the subject more than a decade ago. Since then, the concept remained a part of the sport but has never really been addressed in-depth.

Chris who has a very strong defensive background courtesy of the work he did with Mihkelson, has attempted to deconstruct both the defensive and offensive prowess of guards by breaking them down to their bare essentials.

That is exactly what he shares in this portion of his Turning BJJ Defense Into Offense DVD, starting with one of the staple concepts of wrestling – the tree trunk/pole concept. A lot of attention goes towards hand-fighting the key components of defense, and offense and combining both of them.

Chris covers open guards in this volume, addressing both how to use them as a guard plater and how to set yourself up to pass them.

Part 3 – Just Stand Up

Sticking to the tree trunk concepts which he dubbs “Bonsai”, Paines goes into one of the most useful, yet frustrating concepts of modern BJJ – standing up from guard. It is highly useful because it introduced another dimension to BJJ, one previously heavily used in wrestling.

Frustrating, because it can be extremely difficult to stand up while someone is not allowing you to, effectively focusing only on that task to the detriment of actually grappling. This usually results in chaos and loss of positions. Paines goes over the hand-fighting principles that are essential for standing up safely and effectively, before addressing some key defensive postures from bottom positions.

This part of the Chris Paines DVD mostly covers the defensive cycle, targeting the use of the turtle position and its relation to the ‘running man’ defensive posture. Chris’ goal is to guide us to standing without risking joint locks and chokes, all the while opening your own counter-submission opportunities.

Part 4 – Distance Management

past the halfway point of the Turning BJJ Defense Into Offense instructional, Paines switches his attention almost exclusively to offense, by presenting different methods that annoy people who attack you so much that they end up doing their worst, allowing you to capitalize.

That is exactly what his ‘sugar in the gas tank’ concepts cover – how to stop people dead in their tracks while they’re attacking you. The vital aspect, you guessed it – hand fighting. This time, however, it is distance that makes offensive hand fighting possible and Chris does a marvelous job explaining how it works in BJJ.

The turtle position features a lot in this volume again, with the focus now on the spine – both yours and that of your opponents. More precisely, Chris talks about alignment and misalignment of the spine and how it affects grappling.

Part 5 – Pressure

Wrapping this Chris Paines DVD up is a volume covering pressure, which, as I’ve discovered during my own experiments, can come from the bottom person (a.k.a. the one defending) as much as the one on top.

Paines’ final volume covers the use of shot points and counterweights, as the main components of having a pressure-based game that stops attacks and allows you to turn the tables in just a few moves. The cherry on the top, and the final chapter in the story, is a section covering Apex chokes.

Turning Defense into Offense

One of the most difficult things I’ve ever managed to achieve in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to figure out how to turn the tables when I am defending. The challenge was not to initiate scrambles while I was defending, nor look for low-percentage submissions, like bottom-side control Amaericanas. It was to play defense in a way that slowly and methodically opens up high-percentage attacks with the attacker remaining oblivious to my intentions, but unable to achieve anything.

Suffice it to say, I spent countless rounds tapping out to silly stuff and stewing under the pressure of top players until things started to click. Of course, I had help along the way, and Chris was actually one of the few people who covered this subject in some of his earlier work.

Having the ability to defend confidently puts you in a position where you never feel panicked or threatened again – you’re in control even when you’re “losing” which is a very powerful position to be in. Once you master that shift in the grappling mindset, you will find out that attacking from defense is actually much closer than you thought.

Attack, Attack, Attack!

You might say I am biased toward Chris Paines’ work in grappling because I am a fan of intelligent approaches to the sport that challenge unnecessary fluff which has overtaken the sport lately. That said, I really can’t see how anyone would go wrong with picking up the Turning BJJ Defense Into Offense Chris Paines DVD.

While you will need a solid foundation of defense, an you can only get that by placing yourself in bad spots and finding ways out, this resource is immense in providing a conceptual framework of where all your defense leads. I’d jump on this as soon as possible so that you have more time than your opponents to break it down and use it.
