Learning takedowns is one of the hardest aspects of BJJ, along with passing, but unlike the latter, people can shy away from takedowns by opting for guard pulls instead. Whenever a move appears that somehow makes takedowns easier to master, it should instantly become the centerpiece of your game, unless you’re a collegiate wrestler or Olympic-level Judoka.

The Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD seems like yet another wrestling instructional, albeit the subject is one that is extremely beneficial for Jiu-Jitsu grapplers – the knee tap takedown. However, as you’ll see from our review, this short instructional turns out to be much more than a takedown combo blueprint.

Key Takeaways

  • BJJ No-Gi DVD with 2 short volumes reaching barely an hour of material.
  • Extends past just knee tap setups and covers how to learn movement that lets’ you master any technique first.
  • Includes follow-ups to the knee tap, such as passes and submission finishes.
  • BJJ World Expert Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

The Most Efficient Wrestling Takedown for BJJ

I am a fan of trips and upper-body takedowns rather than shooting, as many of my damaged body parts won’t allow for anything else. It is not that I don’t go for the occasional single, very rarely double though, if I create the right opportunity.

One of the moves that still falls under the category of leg takedowns, even though it is mostly upper-body work, is the wrestling knee tap. This incredible takedown is the epitome of off-balancing (popularly known as Kuzushi) and requires no shooting or crazy athleticism to pull off against skilled opponents, making it a great choice for anyone.

An even better aspect of the knee tap is that it doesn’t feature a major level change, so it leaves you in a clinch position, most often with an underhook, to recover and try again if you fail with your initial attempt. That underhook is also o massive at providing you impeccable top positioning immediately after you finish the takedown.

The knee tap is a very easy-to-master move that both older, beat-up grapplers and complete newbies can quickly add to their arsenal, introducing lots of diversity to their standing game. The Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD is an incredible resource on how to set up your research plan to master this effective wrestling move for BJJ.

The Indestructable Sam Schwartzapfel

One reason you might not know who Sam Schwartzapfel is (outside of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu circles) as he is “still just a brown belt.” With a huge wrestling background though, and a competitive career reaching back more than a decade, the Eddie Bravo brown belt has put the professional No-Gi scene on notice.

The remarkable story of Sam has been inspiring to say the least, with Schwartzapfel returning to the sport he loves even after suffering a horrific car accident that left him in a serious condition. The accident prompted Sam to rethink how he moves, creating a crazy effective system for grappling that he uses to dominate now.

He puts safety first and has come up with a way to train BJJ and compete at a high level without taking any unnecessary risks while still being super efficient. Sam has a pretty well-rounded style that is surprising even to the creative folks over at 10th PLanet, and we now get to see a part of it in the Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD.

Detailed Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD Review

My Sam Schwartzapfel DVD Review Knee Tap Series DVD review was a lot more fun than I anticipated. Not knowing who Sam was before, I was surprised and inspired by his story, but also by the way he approaches Jiu-Jitsu and this DVD. This two-part No-Gi instructional lasts around an hour but is essential for anyone looking how to practice BJJ for a lifetime, even though you expect a wrestling DVD when you read the title

Part 1 – Learning Essential Movement

This DVD is anything but your round-of-the-mill BJJ DVD. Sam begins by talking a lot about his accident and instead of making this a wrestling instructional, which he is extremely good at actually starts by addressing a huge aspect of 10P Jiu-JItsu first – their warm-up system.

Sam focuses on the fundamentals of movement and how they relate to efficiency in this volume, demonstrating how he changed his own game to transform it from the 10Th Planet system into his own, simplified version. Some key aspects he covers include hip heisting and hip walking, but the best chapter is the one on how to develop moves that will help you execute a specific move, such as the knee tap easily.

This part of the Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD feels like an early Eddie Bravo instructional, with folks dropping in to chat with Sam as he demonstrates. All that is missing is a band playing.

Part 2 – Knee Taps for BJJ

The second portion of the Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap DVD holds a bit more in terms of techniques and combinations. Schwartzapfel’s goal is to integrate BJJ with wrestling, rather than just show wrestling so what he does is, he provides instinctive and effective follow-ups to the knee tap tailor-made for Jiu-Jitsu.

For example, he has an armbar entry straight off the takedown, as well as some key follow-up pins and passes. He bases most of his entries and follow-ups on an initial underhook control, which is the best way to set up a wrestling knee tap.

A section on leg lock defense to deal with counters and the notion of doing things with a clear purpose, rather than just moving wraps up this short, but very useful instructional.

A Tap That Wins Matches

The knee tap is a move that will help you win plenty of matches, even though it may not and you all the takedowns you attempt by doing it. Apart from being a viable and useful takedown for BJJ, its real value lies in opening up follow-up opportunities that are even more effective.

For me, and probably most older grapplers out there, those are trips and sweeps coupled with a safety net of a guard pull straight into your favorite sub. It also offers a bunch of transitional options for those who like to mingle Judo in their standing game, as creates such a powerful Kuzuhi that people will then fall prey to virtually any takedown or throw you attempt.

Finally, there is the control option. Most takedowns use lots of forward or spinning force to execute, which crates that problem of inertial movement that the bottom person can use for a reversal. The underhook, featuring heavily in this Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD, which stays in place during the knee tap ensures a stable top position after the takedown, even if you end up in someone’s guard.

Tap ‘Em Out!

Mastering the knee tap is going to give you a very powerful weapon to use in both Gi and No-Gi, as you’ll achieve that crucial Kuzishi more effectively than by using only upper or lower-body-based takedown systems. Moreover, it provides incredible direct pin and submission follow-ups.

The best part about this Sam Schwartzapfel Knee Tap Series DVD is that it goes beyond just showing moves and combos. It teaches a whole new approach to BJJ, leading you to explore the motions behind a move and then practice them with the purpose of making that move work flawlessly for you. One of the best BJJ DVDs I’ve seen in 2024.

What’s Scrimmage Wrestling?

The term scrimmage is not something you often hear in terms of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In team-based sports, scrimmage refers to playing “mock” games during practice, which are not scored or officiated but replicate exactly what the athletes encounter during a live, official game.

In wrestling terms, this means you’re playing the “who scores first” game, setting it up to mimic the official scoring goals of the sport. The same is true for BJJ, with the New Wave team preferring to set up their scrimmage rounds following the ADCC ruleset format.

In the first of what I expect is going to be a long series of instructional Ryan explains how exactly they set up this popular aspect of training. The Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD outlines his experiences in learning wrestling by aiming to score a point using ADCC rules, and starting from standing.

Learning From Gordon Ryan Instructionals

There is no point talking about what Grodon Ryan has done in his grappling career. He is such a staple name at the moment that even people who have never trained know who he is and get pulled into BJJ because of him.

Apart from his stellar no-Gi grappling performances that positioned him as the best competition ever in the history of the sport, Ryan has been very active in sharing his knowledge and understanding of Jiu-Jitsu through instructionals.

When he first started, Ryan approached BJJ DVDs as seminars, offering way too many details and no real way to follow his train of thought unless you watch the entire instructional. With his early DVDs lasting more than 8 hours, this was no easy task.

I am glad that Gordon proved that he is an incredible student of the game in every possible way, learning and adapting to start issuing way better-structured DVDs that offer a lot more information that will benefit those that mostly watch BJJ instructionals – white to purple belts.

his latest instructional marks the start of a whole new era, with the GOAT addressing his standing fame for the first time ever in the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD.

Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD Review

In this No-Gi (no surprise there) Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD, the “King” introduces his approach to the standing aspects of the BJJ game. With his trusted uke Nathalia Santoro, Gordon demonstrates how to set up a winning approach to wrestling on the feet for the specific goal of winning BJJ matches.

Part 1 – Introduction to the Concept of Scrimmage Wrestling

Gordon begins his instructional in a very Danaher-esque manner, going through an entire 40-minute-long volume of theory regarding the standing game in Jiu-Jitsu. He first defines the goals of the instructional, making a careful and precise comparison of the scoring goals in wrestling and BJJ, focusing on the differences.

This sets the tone for setting up a tactical approach that wins you matches, and organize training in an efficient manner. Ryan talks a lot about time limits and pacing, as most people know that standing exchanges are the physically most demanding aspects of grappling.

As this part of the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD draws to an end, Ryan also covers the role of posture, common submission risks, and the scoring criteria in BJJ. I liked that he included the beginner’s theory as well, providing clear instructions on how new students should approach the standing game.

Part 2 – Stance and Motion

When I first started learning wrestling takedowns, the first two out of 5 crucial steps to any takedown were stance and motion. While it may seem like practicing katas, stance, and motion are the vital precursor of any successful takedown.

Gordon goes really deep in this one, covering stuff such as line of sight, how to align your own body, attacking the legs and the dominance that locked arms have over unlocked ones.

He also demonstrates some basic setups in this part of the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD. These serve as a foundation for the introduction of distance management, and the concept of smartly using the 3 zones at your disposal.

Part 3 – Grips

Grips are a tedious subject to study in grappling. yes, I know they’re very important, I tooth the same horn, but I still do not enjoy experimenting with them for long periods of time. Gordon’s third volume does not make things easier.

In this part dedicated solely to grips, Ryan goes over the general gripping theory they utilize at New Wave Jiu-Jitsu and talks a lot about the inside position. He introduces a few interesting concepts in his chapters on asymmetry which are only going to excite black belts, if we’re being honest.

If I had to only watch one part of this volume of the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD over and over again, it would be the one with chapters on creating ties, particularly collar ties, as the opening configuration.

Part 4 – Defense

As the instructional portion of the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD draws to a close, Gordon foes over staple defenses that are crucial to allow you to set stance, motion, and grips up in the first place.

He really does go basic here, which I appreciate. there is no place for fluff in wrestling, so Gordon sticks to comparing early and late defenses, and portraying how to keep your legs safe using both methods.

Parts 5 & 6 – Rolling Footage and Commentary

The customary rolling commentary is the centerpiece of the final two volumes of the Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD. In the fifth part, he does four rolls with different people, totaling 20 minutes of material.

In the final volume, Ryan does a commentary on those four roles, spending a lot of time on each, explaining exactly what he did, though, and how he adjusted to his partner. his analysis more than doubles the length of this part, which runs for almost 50 minutes.

A Different Approach to Standing

This Gordon Ryan Systematically Attacking The Scrimmage DVD is not going to teach you everything about wrestling for BJJ. I expect there are other titles to follow in this Gordon Ryan standing DVD series, but until such time, the truly crucial aspects of wrestling are all at your disposal.

If you can figure out a way to get close enough to someone to establish a locked arms position, you can set up any wrestling, or to an extent, Judo game that you want, while not losing control over the opponent. With this as your main goal, stance, motion, and grip fighting will emerge pretty naturally.

Instead of focusing on the final outcome, which is the takedown, and practicing how to do it over and over again focus on achieving dominant control over your opponent during standing, and keep them there. This opens up a lot more than just one takedown, which, oftentimes, in BJJ, ends up blocked or with you in a submission hold.

Russian Wrestling for BJJ

One thing (out of quite a few) that sets Russian wrestling apart from Western wrestling is the heavy and deliberate use of clinching as the means to set up takedowns, trips, and throws. This is the perfect methodology to use when setting up BJJ takedowns as well and merits further investigation.

Namely, instead of shooting across the length of the mats to hit a double, which in BJJ, might get you locked up in a guillotine or Kimura, you choose to manage distance and win grip fighting first. As you gain control over most of the opponent’s torso, you are free to ragdoll them using any means at your disposal, from upper body throws to powerful leg takedowns.

The integration of clinch work in BJJ is not too difficult and does emerge intuitively after you spend a while training. However, getting to the clinch is where most people fail, as nobody likes to flair their elbows in Jiu-Jitsu. This is where Russian wrestling comes in.

As you’ll see in our Sergei Beloglazov DVD Review: Gold Medal Takedown Mastery, most of the entries into takedown positions and chains that Russian wrestlers use begin by controlling the arms, usually doubling up with two of your grips on one arm, as well as the opponent’s neck. Perfect for Brazlian Jiu-Jitsu!

From Russia With Force: Coach Sergei Beloglazov

Sergei Beloglazov is one of the most recognizable names in the world of Russian wrestling. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion wrestler was born in 1956 in Kaliningrad and was involved in wrestling his entire life.

In fact, Belgolazov comes from a family with al long wrestling tradition, and his twin brother, Anatoly is also an Olympic and World champion. According to many, he is the best freestyle wrestler of all time, particularly given that he is a small guy who used to dominate the under 57 and under 62 kg divisions.

After spending almost a decade as the Head Coach of the National Wrestling Federation in Singapore, Sergei took up the mantle of head coach at Cliff Keen Wrestling, one of the hubs of wrestling in the US.

He has now made his coaching methods, or at least some of them, accessible to the masses, with the Sergei Beloglazov DVD: Gold Medal Takedown Mastery his latest effort to raise the bar for all types of grapplers.

Full Sergei Beloglazov DVD Review: Gold Medal Takedown Mastery

This instructional is a three-part wrestling DVD that goes over the methods of upper body control that lead to different trips, throws, and takedowns rooted in Russian wrestling. The Sergei Beloglazov DVD dubbed Gold Medal Takedown Mastery includes very valuable information on arm drags, the Russian tie, the front headlock, and undertook control, all presented in under 2 hours.

Part 1 – Underhooks and Arm Drags

In the opening volume of the Sergei Beloglazov Takedown Mastery DVD, the legendary Russian wrestler begins by presenting a myriad of ways to control opponents using underhooks. His take is to control your opponent as you draw them into takedowns, rather than launching at them.

Sergei manages to place lots of attention on wrist control and grip dominance without making the subject boring, which is truly an art form. Once positional mechanics are done he uses throw bys and snap downs to open up headlock/body lock combos, as well as entries to the legs.

The second portion of the first part also addresses something BJJ folks are very familiar with – arm drags. Given that they are a staple of Russian wrestling, Beloglazov offers some unique insights on how to use the arm drag to get the legs, foto sweeps, and knee picks, which I personally enjoyed the most from this DVD.

Part 2 – Front Headlock

Another position we use on a daily basis in BJJ is the front headlock, albeit far less effectively than world-class wrestlers. This volume of the Sergei Beloglazov DVD focuses on helping you bridge this gap.

He starts by deconstructing the crucial mechanics of the front headlock position, demonstrating the principle of folding as he connects it with ankle picks. The following section on chaining the front headlock with cradles and the Pancake is tailor-made for Jiu-Jitsu.

Past the halfway point, Belgolazvo turns up his wrestling efforts, demonstrating double legs, cross knee picks, and snaps to further compliment the front headlock chains. As he draws part two of the Takedown Mastery instructional to close, he also addresses the double unders position, presenting roll through takedowns and direct pins.

Part 3 – The 2-on-1 Control

The bread and butter of Russian wrestling is the 2-on-1 arm control position, perhaps better known as the Russian Tie. A personal favorite of mine for use in BJJ, the position offers huge benefits both during standing and while playing certain guards.

Understandably, the final portion of the Sergei Beloglazov DVD: Gold Medal Takedown Mastery focuses on the takedowns stemming from the 2-on-1. Sergei goes over the most effective setups and dynamic positioning principles to constantly keep your opponent on the back leg. Double leg takedowns, stepovers, and the ‘Beloglazov special’ bring this instructional to a conclusion.

Mastering Wrestling Takedowns

Wrestlers are a nightmare to deal with on the mats for BJJ grapplers, but pure wrestling can only take you so far in Jiu-Jitsu. After a certain point, when you go up against seasoned grapplers, you’ll end up deep in BJJ traps if you only rely on the explosiveness and constant movement of wrestling.

Blending both is a different story. I’ve said it many times in the gym and in articles that wrestling is the best grappling complement to BJJ, both for takedowns, defense, and pins. You just need to carefully disregard what is not useful, and more importantly, the things that will get you in trouble.

What I mean by this is that some wrestling moves, such as power double or head inside single are awesome for wrestling, but will open up Guillotine choke and Kimura counters for your opponent. All it takes is a bit of common sense and some on-the-match experience to weed this stuff out of your game.

That leaves you with the stuff that is perfect for BJJ, and nothing makes wrestling more useful to Jiu-Jitsu players than clinch control. Upper body wrestling is the one aspect of freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling that you must master if you want to be successful and dangerous on your feet as a BJJ grappler. The Sergei Beloglazov DVD on Takedown Mastery is a great resource to get you started.

Picking up the Sergei Beloglazov DVD: Gold Medal Takedown Mastery is one of the best things you can do to improve your wrestling efforts on the mats. You won’t just get more efficient and safer takedowns, but also learn how to tie them in with pins and break down defensive efforts with mat returns as you go.

Even if you like to pull guard, you’ll gain valuable information from this instructional. At this point in my BJJ game, being too messed up with injuries to wrestle young guys, I use wrestling takedown setups, mostly in terms of upper body control to set up dangerous guard pulls that lead directly into threats. This DVD has everything you need to do the same!

I’ve never had the pleasure to train with Xande Ribeiro or visit one of his seminars, but I have seen most of his matches, and just about all of his BJJ instructionals. As a competitor, Xande’s legacy is in a class of its own, but he also has left a lasting mark on the BJJ world as one of the best instructors ever!

This latest Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD is a great example of how Xande puts together his instructionals. He picks a wide subject, like building a No-Gi game based on Stand Up and Passing, and then goes over everything you’ll ever need for it: concepts, techniques, tactics, mindset, etc.

Another gem of an instructional that I felt privileged and happy to review today. Check out what you’ll find inside it:

Key Takeaways

  • A 5-part No-Gi BJJ instructional dissecting how to best build a full No-Gi game.
  • Over 3 hours of material on how to organize your standing, passing, and guard No-Gi game.
  • Taught by a legendary World Champion who was only mounted once in his career!

The No-Gi BJJ Game Conundrum

If you’ve never competed in No-Gi, you’re going to be in for a big surprise. I don’t care if you are a black belt with tons of Gi experience, once you enter a No-Gi match, you’ll see that you need careful planning and a highly specific selection of moves and tactics to prevail.

The conundrum most people face in the BJJ World is how to be good at both Gi and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. More often than not, given the complexity of Gi BJJ, particularly in the domain of grip fighting, people opt to train with the Kimono hoping their skills will carry over to No-Gi.

Unfortunately, this approach is flawed and will be exposed once you try a full-paced No-Gi match. The solution is to do the reverse – train No-Gi more so that you develop skills that have a direct carryover to the much more grippable setting of Gi Jiu-Jitsu.

Even better, try to take the worst of both worlds and cross-train. For example, wear Gi pants when you go against people in No-Gi, and allow them to grip them. This way you’ll develop incredible passing skills for both.

Feel free to play around with different training garment combinations, but prioritize No-Gi over Gi if you want to be better at both. If you want to do it fast, think about picking up the Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD.

The Living BJJ Legend That is Xande Ribeiro

it has been a while since I’ve seen a new Xande Ribeiro instructional. I am a sucker for the Ribeiro brother’s teaching style, so I jump in at every opportunity to get a peek into how they handle things, especially since they go for conceptually broad subjects as opposed to narrow specialties.

The pedigree of Xande Ribeiro, the younger of the BJJ power brothers duo is a black belt under his older brother Saulo Ribeiro and is one of the real Brazilian pioneers of the sport in the USA and the world. Always laid back and respectful, the Riberios have been behind some of the biggest names in the sport, such as Rafel Lovato Jr. and Diego Sanchez.

While with most people in the sport, the biggest accomplishments come in the form of world titles, with Xande, the bar is set in another universe. Namely, the 43-year-old has only had his guard passed four times in his career, and has only conceded mount once!

Of course, he also has a bunch of world titles to his name, 7 IBJJF Worlds with the Gi and 2 in No-GI, to be exact, as well as being the ADCC world champion on two occasions. you understand now why I was so stoked to have an early look at the Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD covering Stand Up and Passing.

Detailed Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD Review

The Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD, although titled ‘Stand Up and Passing’ is actually a complete blueprint to Xande’s world title-winning No-Gi game. He has been using this approach since 1999, and, while updating lots of the moves the meat and potatoes of the system remain the same as 25 years ago:

Part 1 – Everything About the Single-Leg

The single-leg takedown is one of the strongest moves for the standing portion of any grappling, MMA, or self-defense situation. It also happens to be Xande’s go-to way of getting people to the mats, so he addresses his favorite set-up, finishes, and pins I the first portion of his No-Gi Offense DVD.

He starts by demonstrating finishes first, just like all the top wrestlers train. What Xande does perfectly is tie these finishes with some ultra-heavy pressure passes immediately off of the takedown. he covers how to enter the single-leg takedown after demonstrating finishes, which is exactly how you need to train as well.

Once on the mats, Ribeiro shows his signature super hold pinning position, that he uses to stop opponents from standing up as he moves to pass their guards. Lots of old-school Judo side control variations feature in this volume, providing some incredible pressure pinning options.

Part 2 – Stacking and Pressure

If there is one thing you can associate with the Ribeiro brothers, it is their immense pressure game from the top. The secret is not in them being ultra heavyweights (although it helps), but rather in how you force your opponent to position themselves.

This part of the Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD is all about stacking people up before you pass, making them beg for the pass. Xande starts with double under, an old-school way of passing that still works beautifully to this day. Some moves he shares, like reaching for the next are true game changers in stack passing!

Ribeiro’s powerful simplicity continues with the proven No-Gi tactic of forcing half guard so that he gets easier access to smashing passes based on the crossface. This volume mends the way to force mount off of a forced half guard. In an elegant way, of course.

Part 3 – The Super Hold

The midway point of the Stand Up and Passing Xande Ribeiro instructional starts with the previously mentioned super hold position, focusing on passing. The endpoint is a Kesa Gatame variation, and Xande offers regular and reverse versions for even more pressure.

The super hold can also be used to bypass side control entirely and get to mount directly from performing any pass. Xande shares the details on how to achieve this, as well as key tips on how to maintain the mount using the same super hold principles after you get there.

Part 4 – Sweeping

The penultimate volume of the Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD shifts gears as Xande heads to the mats, to explore the building block of his No-Gi guard game. Remember, this is the man who has only had his guard passed on 4 occasions in his entire career!

Ribeiro’s focus is on the closed guard first, exploring the most secure gaurd position you can play in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu. he goes over a variety of attacks using two-on-one grips, and lists his favorite transitions into the effective Coyote half guard. Once there it is sweep bonanza with stuff like the rollover and dragon tail sweep.

Part 5 – Butterfly Guard

Xande Ribeiro brings his No-Gi Offense DVD to a close with a volume that covers his highly offensive butterfly guard game. He begins with grips that lead to arm drags, constantly exposing the back. Then, he goes into sweeping using the shoulder crunch, which, contrary to popular opinion is not something Gordon Ryan came up with.

Xande uses his vast competition experience to provide the perfect contention points for his butterfly gaurd attacks and other guards, such as the body lock Coyote gaurd and different Ashi Garami entries that lead to unstoppable submissions.

The instructional concludes with a series of sweeps and wrestling-up tactics that essentially bring you back full circle to the standing and passing aspects of his game.

Setting Up An Aggressive No-Gi Game

Given the dynamic, and after a short while, slippery, nature of No-Gi BJJ, constantly moving is not something you can afford to slack on. However, purposeless movements are worse than not moving at all and even conceding creating positions, so you better have an idea of what you’re going to do.

For the most part, it comes down to recognizing dangers, understanding your goals, and bridging both with the most appropriate grips. It sounds simple, but it is actually very complex, and not at all easy to apply across your entire No-Gi game.

This is where experience matters, and the best way to learn from experience is to learn from someone who has heaps of it. Of course, if you have access to a world-class No-Gi competitor who has won it all, by all means, go to them for advice.

Alternatively, you check out the blueprint of one of the best, most methodical grapplers ever by acquiring the Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD that will teach you everything you need to know about selecting the most efficient moves for an unstoppable, aggressive No-Gi game.

You can figure out how to grapple with the Gi pretty much on your own, as it allows you to get away with stuff by gripping and manipulating the cloth. However, there is nowhere to hide in No-Gi, and unless you ask for advice, you’ll struggle and probably give up on it.

Since this Xande Ribeiro No-Gi Offense DVD is now available, there is no need to get the Gi back on – you have all you need to build a truly comprehensive No-Gi BJJ game. As someone who has exclusively done No-Gi BJJ for the past 7 years (just as many years with the Gi prior to that), I found incredibly useful information in this DVD.  I expect it ill help you solve No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu as well!

The ankle pick is an interesting subject in BJJ. It is a takedown that is very effective and works perfectly in combination with other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu moves, but it also seems people are afraid to go after it. In my experience, this is because they’re uncomfortable with level changes.

In BJJ, level changes are different than in wrestling. There are submissions to consider, and generally, the pace is much slower. Moreover, people tend to leave their feet and ankles exposed, as they don’t recognize threats at that level as significant. that is a huge mistake, and one you can, and should capitalize on. The Ankle Pick Anthology Keelon Jimison DVD might help you with that.

Key Takeaways

  • 1-part No-Gi DVD about ankle pick takedowns, good for beginners only.
  • An hour-long instructional by a former wrestler recorded outdoors.
  • Left and right setups, timing, scoring, and off-the-whistle tactics included.
  • BJJ World Expert Rating: 6 out of 10.

Why Low Takedowns Work in BJJ

The first time I saw an ankle pick was when my professor showed the now quintessential Gi misdirection attack – a fake guard pull to an ankle pick. I was a blue belt. Back then I liked it because it presented an option off the guard pull while allowing me to keep a collar grip on.

Nowadays, I appreciate the ankle pick even more, but it has nothing to do with pulling guard or that overused combo I mentioned above. The true value of the ankle pick is in the level of attack, which is something BJJ folks are not too aware of.

Namely, in standing exchanges, BJJ athletes focus on stuff like judo throws using  Gi grips, wrestling elg attacks like the single and double leg takedown and high crotch, various trips, and the front headlock. None of these, apart from a low single, directly attack the ankles, though.

This is an untapped opportunity in BJJ. Hunting for an ankle from standing, or even better, half kneeling creates a complicated problem for your opponent. You see, it takes two legs to stay upright and get to the top position. If you control the end of one leg, you control a big lever in relation to the opponent’s hip, one you can use to force that hip to the mats.

Enter ankle-level takedowns such as ankle picks. As long as you can figure out how to retain control over the ankle, you’re going to literally drive your opponent wherever you want them to go. The best part is, that they are readily available off of any of the more common takedowns I mentioned above.

Who is Keelon Jimison?

Keelon Jimison, a.k.a. Mugzy is an amateur MMA fighter from the US with a wrestling background. He is more of a social media star than an athlete, to be honest, and somehow, he managed to release an instructional on ankle picks that are available to the BJJ public.

Not much information is available Jimison, apart from his 1-0 amateur MMA record as part of Shamrock FC, a promotion out of St. Louis. He had a solid wrestling career in high school and college but is far from world-champion quality.

That said, looking at his Instagram profile, Keelon seems pretty fast as a wrestler and shows some great timing and instincts. He changes levels with incredible speed, which is what allows him to be extremely proficient at ankle picks, a signature move of his that he deconstructs pretty thoroughly in his Ankle Pick Anthology DVD instructional.

Ankle Pick Anthology Keelon Jimison DVD Review

The glaring thing that sets this Keelon Jimison DVD apart from others is its length. The entire instructional is crammed into one volume, which is very uncommon these days. Moreover, it seems to be shot in a backyard or the far side of a football pitch.

To be honest, the shoot location or the unusual structure of this instructional is not the key aspects that define its quality. It is all about the content found inside, which is divided into three main sections within one volume:

Ankle Pick Anthology: A Keelon Jimison DVD Review

Section 1 – Introduction

The opening few chapters cover an introduction to the ankle pick in wrestling, as well as the ‘off-the-whistle’ concept which is prevalent throughout the Ankle Pick Anthology Keelon Jimison DVD instructional.

As you’re probably guessing, this refers to going for a move the moment you hear a ref blow the whistle, which is more suited to wrestling than BJJ. Whistling aside, Keelon does address a very important aspect of any takedown which is how to hide it as you go for it. In the case of a low-level takedown, requiring lots of motion, such as the ankle pick, this is exceptionally vital.

Section 2 – Stance and Motion

If you’ve ever been to a wrestling class you’ve heard about stance and motion. Similar to grips in BJJ, these are two aspects that nobody wants to spend time drilling but are crucial to any grappling success. Keelon ‘s take on both is filtered through ankle picks, making this section relevant, and even useful, given the subject.

The chapters on the push-pull interplay in grabbing the ankle pick and finishing it were definitely worth watching. I liked that Keelon covers both left and right-side setups with everything he demonstrates.

Section 3 – Scoring

The scoring aspects covered in the Ankle Pick Anthology instructional are mostly from a wrestling perspective, but they translate to BJJ as well, given that a takedown cores points across martial arts.

The focus is once again on getting the ankle pick straight off the white whistle, which is understandable seeing how speed is Keelon’s main advantage. He goes over the full ankle lock sequence in a couple of chapters, from stance and motion to finishing, all done with exceptional precision and quickness.

Section 4 – In-Match Tactics

Just under half of this Keelon Jimison DVD is dedicated to in-match tactics revolving around the ankle pick. Once again, everything is presented from a wrestling standpoint but suits the needs of BJJ athletes even more than those of wrestlers.

This part is all about grip fighting that helps set up different ankle pick entries, with Keelon favoring Collar ties and the Baseball bat grip, which was something I’ve never used before and I found it very interesting. Once again, left and right combos are covered for each setup, including baits and some key insights on timing.

The Role of Level Changes

In a sport where you can go from standing to your back and keep fighting without losing any points, changing levels is obviously of critical importance. BJJ exchanges go to the extremes of human motion, and, in a vertical sense, that means being able to move from standing to flat on the mats, preferably belly down, in a second, or sometimes even less.

This is a tall order, but at the end of the day, it is absolutely essential to success. levels don’t just dictate how good you are at takedowns, but also how well you control topo positions or create space when on bottom.

Combine level changes with the power of controlling one of the opponent’s legs and not allowing it to touch the mats, and you have a very powerful position to work from, regardless of what level you find yourself at. Even better, you can go through all of them and retain control as long as you don’t let go of the leg.

Pick it Up!

Obviously, low-level (in terms of height, not efficiency) takedowns are a silver bullet of sorts for BJJ athletes. They are tricky to master, but once you get the hang of them, they’re a nightmare to defend against.

You can start literally anywhere, even by trying out your own ways of trapping an ankle. However, an instructional that might help, mostly if you’ve never done this before, is very athletic and fast, or both is the Ankle Pick Anthology Keelon Jimison DVD. While somewhat short and strange, this instructional is perfect to get you going with ankle picks without too much confusion, so it is worth considering.

Do you know what the most difficult aspect of any takedown in martial arts is? Keeping the person you just took down on the ground. If you’ve ever managed a takedown in a competitive setting you know what I am talking about.

Since nobody is going to allow you to keep them down, pass their guard, and submit them, you’ll need to work for it. And to do that, someone needs to give you directions. While everyone’s game is different and individual, there are some fundamental ways of approaching building a game that is tied together as a whole that is unchangeable.

Apart from your coach, there is the Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD dubbed DK Style: The Art Of Setting Up Takedowns To Effective Submissions And Leg Locks. She is a world-class competitor and world champion. It is easy to choose to heed her advice.

The Art of Mastering Offensive Transitions

It is very easy to get lost in the intricate realm of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques and positions and claim they don’t work. Of course, things are not going to work when you’re trying to factor in tens of ultra-fine details while disregarding the big picture of what you’re trying to achieve.

Who cares if you tapped your opponent in the finals using a choke you just came up with? It doesn’t have to contain all 37 details your coach showed you, as long as it works. Well, speaking of things that work, making sure an opponent you take down does not stand up is key to doing everything you intend to after the standing battle.

This is one aspect of grappling I see students struggle with a lot. After a takedown, everyone expects a rest, an opponent that will accept to stay on the mats, and a passing opportunity whenever they feel like it. It rarely works that way.

If you want to be successful with your top game, you’ll need to be able to integrate every major aspect of the game into it and stay aware of the whole picture. That is exactly what the ‘DK Style’ Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD addresses – how to connect takedowns, passing, and submissions.

Danielle Kelly: The  Female Grappler to Beat 2024

Danielle Kelly is one of the most inspiring and positive faces in the world of Jiu-Jitsu. Currently holding the ONE FC Atomweight Grappling World Champion title, Dani represents all the grapplers of the new era.

Still only 28, Danielle is a black belt under Karl ‘Silverfox’ Pravec, one of Renzo Gracie’s best students and a world-renowned coach. Proudly representing team Silverfox, Kelly has placed herself as the one to beat, with flawless performances inside the ONE cage so far, which put a spotlight on her constantly evolving grappling style.

On the mats, Danielle’s style is marked by relentlessness – she never stops. Kelly, who has competed in just about every grappling martial art since the age of 10, is not afraid to wrestle, fight with her back on the ground, or hunt for leg locks.

She worked her trade to perfection in professional Jiu-Jitsu tournaments such as EBI, WNO, and ADCC Trials. She then found her home in the ONE cage, representing the highest level of BJJ along with Mikey Musumeci among elite-level grapplers, wrestlers, and Sambo fighters.

Kelly’s first title defense is set for August 2, 2024, when she’ll face her toughest opponent to date – the experienced and dangerous Mayssa Bastos. With the match about a month away, Dani still found time to treat us with her first instructional, and with it, a peek into her teaching style.

Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD Review: Setting Up Takedowns To Submissions And Leg Locks

Yes, Dani loves leg locks, but this instructional is much more than just a leg lock Danielle Kelly DVD. It is a blueprint of her grappling game, focused on her top game in No-Gi, and she makes that clear from the beginning.

Dani shares her competitive go-to moves in three volumes of the DK Style Takedowns, Leglocks & Submissions instructional, with the material amounting to just under an hour and a half.

DK Style: Takedowns to Leg Lock Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD Review

Part 1 – Throws And Takedown Sequences

As she begins her instructional, Kelly opens up with a short overview of her mindset during competitive grappling matches, which I find much more useful than trying to impart a one-size-fits-all strategy. She keeps it short, moving immediately into a very powerful takedown throw combo based on the Uchi Mata.

As a former Judoka, I am acutely aware of how difficult the Uchi Mata is to perform against opposition in a BJJ setting. Dani resolves this glaring issue by chaining it with a Guillotine threat, that serves both as a takedown and a submission threat. She expands on it using wall grappling tactics, which are perfect for those grappling in cages.

The conclusion of the first volume of this premiere Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD is all about using the knee shield pass. Dani flows into it from both a successful Uchi Mata and the guillotine-enforced one, providing a very intuitive and logical sequence.

Part 2 – Leg Locks and Chokes

You only have to wait until the second volume of the “DK Style’ DVD instructional for some of those signature leg attacks Kelly is known for. The first point on the agenda is the knee bar, and how it works from the top, as a dilemma attacks bound with passing threats.

Staying true to the subject of the DVD, Kelly shows follow-up heel hooks to failed kneebar attempts, as well as a way to go in and out of the 4/11 position, using it for both leg locks and passing.

The cherry on the top of this Leg Lock Danielle Kelly is the D’arce choke set up by passing the knee shield half-guard. Another dilemma, another successful pass or tap. Or both. I actually tried this immediately after watching the instructional and it worked immediately. I do love D’arces, though, so that might have helped.

Part 3 – Leg Lock Submission Chains

The final portion of the ‘DK Style’ Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD keeps connecting leg lock attacks, starting (or better said, continuing) from the 4/11 position. Dani blends in a Kimura threat using the 4/11 before exploring ways to set up knee bar-heel hook combinations from the X guard.

As a final topic in its instructional, Kelly turns to a position that seems to be emerging as a popular leg-locking alternative – the bear trap. Of course, she wraps up with a heel hook, rather than trying to muscle in a calf-slicer finish. An elegant way to wrap this instructional up.

The Big Picture Competition Game

Danielle Kelly’s ‘DK Style’ DVD covers a very important subject in BJJ, that is rarely discussed outside of game design in competition classes. While I am aware that not everyone has a competitive appetite (including me, lately) the ability to seamlessly transition between different key pins and weave in submission threats remains a big, if not the biggest, condition for success.

So why ignore it? Build a game that works, regardless of whether or not you’re going to compete or just roll. A friend of mine once said that if you roll in the gym without setting a task to achieve, you’re just wasting your time. I completely agree.

Whenever you’re rolling, try to keep the big picture in mind. You’re going to take someone down, but then what? You’ll pass a guard but then what’s next? BJJ works as a turbulent flow more than a set of sequences divided by clear borders.

The Takedown and Leg Lock Danielle Kelly BJJ DVD is a great resource to start thinking like a competitor by looking at how a World Champion’s brain works in terms of planning her game. Even if you hate leg locks and takedowns, and would rather pull guard and do triangles, you’ll learn a lot from this DVD.

Riding the Legs in Grappling

Have you ever done a Twister while rolling in BJJ? How about the truck position, or Ninja rolls to get the back? all of these are examples of leg rides that work like a charm in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Despite it all, this wrestling staple is not usually taught in BJJ schools on its own, nor does it get the attention it deserves.

I have said it before and will say it again, wrestling is a complete grappling martial art that has a lot more benefits for BJJ players than just a few takedown combos. The mat returns and mat control offered by wrestling are unparalleled, given the crazy positions wrestlers get in to stave off getting pinned.

This is exactly why dynamic ground control moves such as leg rides are so useful in BJJ. Their versatility ensures that you fulfill a major principle of top control – preventing one of the opponent’s legs from leaving the mats, effectively taking away any chance they have, or standing up or getting on top of you.

Once entangled, leg rides work much like Ashi Garami, but instead of leading to leg locks, they lead to position pins, such as side control, mount, or back mount. This Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD we’re reviewing today is a very useful resource for those willing to introduce some wrestling spice to their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game.

Cal Poly Wrestling Coach Evan Wick

Wrestling is one of the staples of American high school and collegiate sports, with lots of kids taking part at one point or another in their trip through the educational system. Some of those kids go on to become multiple times division I All-American wrestlers and become wrestling coaches themselves, like Evan Wick.

Evan started wrestling in Wisconsin but transferred to Cal Poly in his final year. A very aggressive and fast-paced wrestler, Wick has a knack for draining opponents through smart attachments that force them to give in. Breaking wrestlers is no easy task, so Wick is exactly who you want to be learning wrestling from.

With a record of 23-1 in his one wrestling season with Cal Poly, and an overall record of 133-22 it is clear why Evan Wick was kept on as a coach. After joining, he has influenced the wrestling program so much, that the head Cal Poly coach has claimed he “changed the trajectory” of the team’s performance.

If you’re not a part of the Cal Poly wrestling team, though, the only way to pick his brain (sort of) is to pick up the Evan Wick Leg Ride DVD. Do not forget to keep an eye out for him, as he is not yet done with competition, with World and Olympic medals still long his radar as a competitor representing the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club.

Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD Review

The Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD is a short and precise one. The material is spread over two volumes, covering mechanics and leg ride entries, and everything that you can gain from there on. Given the subject, the instructional is short, but it delivers al the key information you need, especially if you’ve never encountered leg rides before.

Part 1 – Leg Riding Basics

Leg riding is essentially a way of hooking the legs of an opponent, mostly while they are in the referee’s position in wrestling, and using it to prevent them from standing up as you look to pin them on the mats. You can see how this can translate to BJJ.

The first volume of the Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD covers the mechanical aspects of leg rides and a few different ways you can attach both above and below the opponent’s knee. He particularly stays with the figure four-leg ride configuration, which offers the most options in terms of versatility.

The first volume ends with an introduction to how the cradle position connects to leg rides, which is the main subject of the second part of this grappling DVD.

Part 2 – Riding to the Cradle

The second (and final) part of this Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD builds on the leg riding basics from the first volume, expanding to include not just more control, but also even direct submission options.

While Wick shows leg bars and wrist attacks from the leg ride, he also goes over the most common scrambling scenarios, ensuring that even during forced rolls you stay in cruise control. It is literally like you’re riding the leg, following the opponent wherever they go.

The ultimate position to wrap up using a leg ride is the cradle, and Evan covers both near and far-side options,  ending with the torturous cherry on top that is the crossface crunch.

Using Leg Rides in BJJ

Now that you’re aware of what legal rides are, let’s try and see how and where you can use them to improve your BJJ game. First, let’s make it clear that the choice of training attire makes no difference at all since this move works just as well in Gi and No-Gi.

The main use for leg rides that I have found, and fall back to often in Jiu-Jitsu, is to effectively break down the turtle position, With more and more people figuring out the defensive power of the turtle, getting to the head and/or armpits is proving very difficult, if not impossible. Accessing the legs, though, offers a whole different approach that not many people without wrestling experience are aware of.

For example, you can attach yourself not just at hip level, like we do with hooks, but also at knee level (knee rides) or even ankle level (ankle rides). Knee-level insertions vs. the turtle are not unheard of, with most truck and Twister entries or half guard back exposures exploiting this route.

Ankle rides, though, can ensure you break down someone trying to stay in turtle/all fours, effectively preventing opponents from standing up or scrambling (known in wrestling as mat returns) and taking away a key post that allows them to fend off breakdowns and conceding top position.

If you turn towards wrestlers, you’ll find a lot of different resources on the subject of leg rides, some even including very old-school catch wrestling submissions. However, if you want a very practical guide covering the modern-day applications of leg rides in grappling, the Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD is more than enough.

Time For A Ride!

Wrestling has proved over and over again to be the Achilles heel of BJJ. Every time some major innovation happens in BJJ, it can be traced to a wrestling staple Jiu-Jitsu grapplers tend to ignore and dismiss. With the fame around the sending prowess of wrestling not dying down, and wrestling defense on the rise, the next big thing might just be mat returns and mat control.

A look at an instructional such as the Evan Wick Leg Ride Logistics Grappling DVD means you act proactively, expanding your grappling horizons and widening your options of dominating opponents. After all, as long as it is legal, does it really have to be “Gracie-approved” for you to use it in BJJ?

It All Starts With Grip Fighting

Okay, it all starts with distance, really, in any type of martial art or combat sport. Hwoever, the one parameter that defines a distance from which exchanges are possible is the establishment of grips. Even striking arts such as boxing and Muay Thai have the clinch, which helps control the match by controlling distance, all made possible by gripping and attaching.

In BJJ, as well as Judo, wrestling, and all other grappling-based martial arts, grips are absolutely essential to have a meaningful experience. Imagine grappling with an opponent and neither you nor they get any grips going – it is no touch martial arts at their best.

Grips are what allow us to destabilize opponents, isolate parts of their bodies, and lead them to positions where we can assert dominance. Even when finishing, grips are essential – there is rarely a submission in BJJ not requiring that you hold on to some part of your opponent with your arms.

Out of all the grappling martial arts, Judo is the one where you can master the true art of grip fighting. Since no lower body takedowns are allowed in sports Judo, it all comes down to manipulating the upper body of a standing opponent to throw them to the mats. It is no easy feet, which is why Judokas spend some much time working on their grips.

Luckily, you don’t need to become an Olympic Judo champion to develop such powerful grips for BJJ. You just need the experience and tactics of such a champion, which is exactly what you get from Satoshi Ishii and his new Japanese Judo Grip Fighting Secrets DVD.

Olympic Judo Icon Satoshi Ishii

Satoshi Ishii is a household name in Judo and MMA and is one of the most notable Japanese fighters ever. He is still active as a competitor, now focusing on kickboxing and the occasional submission grappling opportunities that professional Jiu-Jitsu opened up.

Ishii was born in Japan in 1986 and has been grappling for most of his life. Not many people in the world can say they have medaled in everything that matters in Judo:

  • 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist.
  • 2006 Asina Games Silver Medalist.
  • 2004 World Judo Champion.
  • 2 x All Japan Judo Champion.

Satoshi also spends considerable time in MMA, fighting for several different organizations such as DREAM, Rizin, Bellator, and K-1, emerging with a professional record of 26-14-1. The naturalized Croatian citizen also has some notable performances in Submission Underground in 2020, where he lost to Craig Jones and Mason Fowler.

Japanese Judo Grip Fighting Secrets DVD: The Review

Satoshi Ishii’s Judo Grip Fighting Secrets is a three-part DVD that covers the basics of grip fighting for grappling martial arts that use the Gi. It covers standing exchanges and goes very deep into depicting the importance of grip placement and maneuvering during grappling:

Japanese Judo Grip Fighting Secrets Satoshi Ishii DVD Review
Japanese Judo Grip Fighting Secrets DVD by Satoshi Ishii

Part 1 – Basic Arm Control Gripst

Satoshi begins his instructional by offering an overview of a bunch of different Gi grips along the length of the arm, and how they work in relation to common stances. The focus of the instructional is on standing exchanges, but many of the principles can be extrapolated for use in all kinds of BJJ situations.

Instead of showing mindlessly complicated grips, Ishii focuses on how you position and move your body as you go from the sleeve, through the elbow, all the way to armpit grips. He also covers the opponent’s stance and positioning, explaining why specific grips work so well against specific stances.

Part 2 – Breaking Grips

As we go into the second part of the Judo Grip Fighting Secrets DVD by Satoshi Ishii, the focus shifts from gripping to preventing grips. Ishii shares the Japanese system that divides the opponent’s arms into pulling and pushing, addressing each accordingly.

Some of the grip breaks in this part are not new, but it is the first time someone has explained them in relation to body positioning and distance. Other grip breaks, such as dealing with overhead grips or maintaining your armpit grip despite the opponent’s breaking efforts stand out in this volume.

Part 3 – Japanese Grip Combos and Counters

The final portion of the DVD looks into more advanced grip exchanges, with intricate Judo tactics on how to grab the sleeve for that super-important first grip. In this portion, there are lots of back-and-forth tactics covered by Ishii, ending with adding color control to the sleeve/armpit grips you already know how to obtain from the previous volumes.

What I really liked about this instructional is that Satoshi covers only grip fighting and does not sidetrack into throws and trips. He sticks to the subject, taking grip fighting very deep, which, despite being boring at times, is extremely important, particularly for those grappling exclusively in the Gi.

How Grip Fighting Makes Your Jiu-Jitsu Better

Ask yourself why you place a grip in a specific position as you grapple. If the answer is ‘because the instructor told me’ then you’re likely wasting your time with the grip. The thing that is of the utmost importance during grip placement in BJJ is purpose.

The grip serves the purpose of attaching you to the opponent, but for it to be effective, that attachment has to lead to something. We all know that ‘death grips” do nothing but tire out our fingers and end up with a ton of money spent on finger tape over the years. So, instead of blindly grabbing things, understand what you’re trying to achieve with those grips.

Satoshi Ishii offers a blueprint for Gi grips during standing exchanges that covers exactly that – why grips work the way they do. The moment you realize that you’ll lock the Japanese Judo grip fighting secrets that will transform your BJJ game into a very effective and annoying one.

So far, Satoshi Ishii has excelled at anything he has done, from Judo to MMA and submission grappling. He does the same as an instructor, delivering one of the best grip-fighting resources I have seen to date, and I’ve seen plenty.

If you want just one instructional to take care of all your grip fighting needs for BJJ, I’m sorry to say no such DVD exists. However, if you want to understand purposeful grip fighting, especially in the context of standing exchanges with the Gi, then the Judo Grip Fighting Secrets DVD is exactly what you need!

The first ultra-efficient back taker I discovered in Jiu-Jitsu was Marcelo Garcia. When he got people’s back, you knew a choke was coming. MG developed an incredibly offensive back mount game that became the stuff of nightmares for everyone – he even won the ADCC using it.

While Marcelo has talked about his approach to back attacks in previous instructional, he never really gave the entire system together. Until now. The MG Back Attack System DVD, featuring back takes, chokes, and crucifix attacks is now out, with Marcelo Garcia himself explaining every key bit of it, and how it all comes to work together. A Marcelo Garcia Back DVD you simply can’t miss!

Back Mount: Cruise Control for BJJ

Whether you play the position or not, you will most likely not say no to the back mount while rolling. We all know how powerful it can be for keeping you in control and allowing you to deal with people of all sizes without having to worry about counters.

Tactically speaking, the back mount is a smart choice from two aspects. First, it earns you at least 4 points, oftentimes more as you fight to attain it, which is the maximum you can get at once. Secondly, once you conquer the back, you don’t have to worry about activity or penalty points anymore. You can (and should) keep the back all the way to the end.

One aspect of back control that seems to disappoint people who go for it in training is submissions. While you can stay on the back for extended periods, that is only because people are more afraid of you struggling with them than holding them, and will fight to stop you.

The MG Back Attack System is exactly what helps put this common grappling issue to rest.

Marcelo Garcia: A Legend of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Some 10 years ago, everyone in BJJ knew the name Marcelo Garcia. It is like Gordon Ryan today, just without all the online exposure he has. That clearly points out how big of a deal Marcelo Garcia is in the BJJ World.

Born in Formiga, Brazil, Garcia has been competing in BJJ since the earliest white belt days. He actively sought out competitions across Brazil as he rose through the ranks, representing different gyms in the process. He then went on to win everything of note:

  • 2 xx CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Champion;
  • 4 x ADCC Champion;
  • 5 x IBJJF World Champion;
  • 1 x IBJJF Pans Champion.

Since 2009, Marcelo has led his MG Academy in New York, producing incredible talent as he put his competitive career to rest. He remained a beast on the mats, though, showcased by his successful battle with stomach cancer, which he recently concluded. The legend was back on the mats as soon as he could!

Full MG Back Attack System DVD Review

The Marcelo Garcia Back Attack System instructional is a four-part series that was released after Marcelo’s victory over cancer. It is a Gi BJJ instructional that goes over Garcia’s full system that made him one of the most feared grapplers in the world:

Marcelo Garcia Back Attack System Review

Part 1 – Getting the Back

The second hardest aspect of the back mount after getting a choke, is gaining access to the back position. It is something Marcelo Garcia is exceptional at, which makes it seem easy, and then disappointing when it doesn’t work in rolling. I know because it happened to me.

Marcelo begins his system by solving this particular problem first. Unlike his earlier instructional, this time Garcia does not spare details. He covers every different way of getting the back you can think of, starting from standing.

Jumps, mat returns, takedown attempts, sprawling – they all open up ways to get the back of a standing opponent. For those who like attacking in more controlled ways, MG offers all for breakdowns, rear body lock back takes, and a bunch of ways to break your partner’s posture.

Part 2 – Quick Back Takes & Crucifix

As the complete MG Back Attack System unfolds, Garcia proceeds to explore more back takes, this time against a grounded opponent. He covers both near and far-side attacks, as well as re-back takes.

As a troubleshooting option for those struggling to attain complete back control, MG offers the crucifix position. The best ever in the position shows in great detail how to enter, hold, and submit from it, having the option to transition to full back control if needed.

Part 3 – Arm Traps & RNC

Part three of this Marcelo Garcia Back DVD is all about finishing. The man who most likely invented the short choke shows a host of different variations of the Rear-Naked choke that work with and without the Gi.

For the first time to date, Marcelo shows his system of dealing with the arms that includes arm traps, and the grip fighting sequences that make it possible. He also provides several extremely powerful ways to expose the neck, regardless of what your opponent is trying to do.

Part 4 – Bow and Arrow & Grip Fighting

Concluding the MG Back Attack System DVD instructional is a volume covering Gi-oriented attacks, with the Bow and Arrow choke replacing the Rear-Naked choke as the main focus. Garcia goes over several grip solutions that make the Bow and Arrow choke incredibly tight, as well as a few interesting variations of the submission.

He also dedicated a lot of time to covering how to beat key defenses, such as the turtle position and sit-outs. MG solves it with his seat belt grip and a series of attacks that wrap up with a standing version of the Bow and Arrow choke.

Mastering the MG Back Attack System

If you ask me, there is no better system out there for the back position than the MG Back Attack System. Sorry Danaher and Gordon, but Marcelo is still the kind when it comes to dominating the back.

Achieving even a fraction of Marcelo’s success with this system is undoubtedly going to make you significantly better at the back mount in a matter of weeks! I am currently exploring the Crucifix position as my research on the mats, and I can attest that Mracelo’s stuff works from day one!

As I tell my most serious competitors, you need to know how to attack the back if you want to have success on the mats. Becoming an annoying human backpack is essential in making anyone’s game much more dangerous and complete, and is not difficult to understand and master.

A resource such as the Marcelo Garcia Back DVD we reviewed today only acts as an accelerator in the learning process, offering you a blueprint containing the answers to all the important questions a back-attacking specialist might ask.

Judo or Wrestling for BJJ? I doubt this question is ever going to be settled in a way that satisfies everyone, as different folks lean towards different ways of standing exchanges. We can’t say that one is more effective than the other, as wrestling works in the Gi, and Judo is still unstoppable without it. Just take a look at Jay Rods Judo!

For the most part, it comes to time – how fast can you learn a throw/takedown combo to get to the fun part of BJJ, which is the ground fighting? Most BJJ competitors have accepted wrestling as the primary source of takedowns, given that it is easier to master.

However, some top competitors like to keep their opponents on their toes (pun intended) and attack using JUdo attacks during No-Gi matches. In this Jay Rodriguez DVD, you’ll learn how to learn and use the most effective throws for BJJ without spending years training Judo to master them.

Key Takeaways

  • No-Gi Judo instructional, with just over an hour and a half of material.
  • Easy to follow, progressive system of developing Judo skills for No-Gi.
  • An entire volume dedicated to combining effective wrestling and Judo moves.
  • BJJ World Expert Rating: 8 out of 10

No-Gi Judo for BJJ

As someone who has been through it all, I can say that Judo is a great fit for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as sending people flying is extremely fun. I have a Judo background and used it a lot in my early days of grappling to get the match to the ground.

Wrestling soon took over, though, given the increased control over opponents after the match hits the mats. At present, I use both Judo and wrestling to set up guard pulls, which remains the only way my body can successfully drag someone into ground fighting.

This just proves how effective both are at forcing people down to the ground. The one aspect of navigating them people like to use is to categorize them depending on their clothing:

However, they are much more effective when used interchangeably. Just look at what athletes like Travis Stevens and Ronda Rousey, have achieved in No-Gi using their explosive Judo skills. As the new generation of grapplers emerges, we see Kayla Harrison, Ffion Davis, and Jay Rod do the same in both MMA and grappling.

So why not mix it up and introduce some Judo to your standup tactics?

Jay Rod: A Rising Grappling Talent

Jay Rod is one of the most talented grapplers who is set on becoming a world champion. He was aiming for the ADCC title, but given that he is representing the most fun team in grappling these days, B-Team, he will probably be showcasing his skills in the Craig Jones Invitational in August of 2024.

There is no question that Jay Rod, the younger brother of B-Team standout Nicky Rod, is among the very best in the world. Apart from his last two outings, which he lost, he has been tearing it up in the professional grappling circuit, winning super fights at UFC Fight Pass, WNO, Quintet, Polaris, Fight to Win, as well as a world title in the Pans.

As with most grapplers these days, Jay Rod prefers training and competing in No-Gi, which perfectly fits his entertaining style. He reminds a lot of Garry Tonon but with superior Judo skills to the New Wave representative. He does a great job of blending his Judo tactics with the wrestling strategies taught at B-team, outlining them all in his Jay Rods Judo DVD!

Full Jay Rodriguez DVD Review: Jay Rods Judo

Jay Rods Judo is the first DVD I’ve seen from the B-team standout. I have to say that I prefer him to his brother Nick, mostly because Jay has a very easy organizational system in his instructional. Each volume of this Jay Rodriguez DVD covers a specific subject in the order they are recorded, offering a way to progress through each crucial skillset you need to become as good at Judo as Jay Rod is.

Part 1 – Establsihing Control

As the Jay Rods Judo DVD opens, Rodriguez begins introducing the topic through his perspective, talking about how the way you attach to your opponent’s upper body is crucial in your Judo for No-Gi BJJ success.  The focus in this volume is on winning underhook or overhook control.

Jay Rod covers a bunch of different ways to establish a dominant grip fight that leads to you successfully inserting underhooks from a distance in a way that opens up Judo attacks. He then links overhooks to the previous entries, while introducing different level stances.

Part 2 – Trips and Throws

Once Jay Rod covers the most efficient ways to control a standing opponent, he goes on to make the most out of it without complicating too much. He sticks to very high-percentage moves that are easy to learn quickly, such as ankle picks, side trips, and quick reactionary hip throws.

A great chapter in this volume of the Jay Rodriguez DVD is the one covering hip loading, which is the crucial element of understanding Judo throws and making them work for you. He also diversifies the options by sharing leg hooks, far arm throws, and my personal favorite – the Kata Guruma a.k.a. the Fireman’s Carry.

Part 3 – Blending Judo and Wrestling

The final portion of the Jay Rods Judo BJJ DVD builds on the tactics presented in the previous volumes, with entries, control, and quick throws and trips all covered. In the final part, he opens the door to mixing in your favorite standing moves to personalize what you’ve learned.

Jay demonstrates innovative ways to mix up foot sweeps with knee tap takedowns, snaps, and duck under with hip throws and body locking with unstoppable trips. Rodriguez also dedicates a chapter to creating and controlling movement and using collar ties to further open up standing Judo attacks.

Quick Judo Fixes for Jiu-Jitsu

Judo might not be high on your list of standing options to quickly increase your success with throws and takedowns. I would have agreed completely with you until a while ago when I found out that you can find shortcuts to everything if you find the right learning sources.

If you decide to learn Judo by going to a black belt Judoka, you’ll take the slow, but much more comprehensive route. What you’ll practically have to do is train and learn another martial art in addition to Jiu-Jitsu.

The alternative is to use analytics of matches, and then seek out people who can teach you the highest percentage Judo moves that work perfectly in BJJ in a fraction of the time. With no access to such experts, the next best thing is turning to instructional, like the Jay Rodriguez DVD I reviewed above.

To sum it up, it is possible to learn effective Judo throws for No-Gi BJJ in a short amount of time, as long as you cut all the fluff out and focus on what specific moves bring to your Jiu-Jitsu game, rather than looking at how they fare in Judo matches.
