If you’re looking for the best BJJ GI possible for your training or competition you’re at the right spot. I’ve been trying a lot of GIS lately and together with all the old ones I tried it’s really hard to conclude the best one, but I’ll do my best to tell you which ones are the best and why.

I’ll split them into a few categories like the cheapest GIs, the best GI overall, etc. so you can find the one that suits your needs more easily.

Here are the list of the best GIs in the market right now:

The Best Gi Overall

Hayabusa Goorudo 3

“The first GI and the one that I find the best right now in 2024 is the Hayabusa Goorudo 3. Maybe I’m a bit biased toward this GI as I’ve been wearing them for a long time right now, but in years of wearing Hayabusa, I still can’t find something that I hate on these GIs. While I own a grey color and I like it with white patches, this Gi comes in 4 colors: grey, blue, white, and black. I’ll now try to explain what I like about it.

This Gi can’t go unnoticed in front of your teammates. It simply looks sick. Considering it looks super, everyone will ask where you got it, what its price is, etc. I’ve had it for 6 months now, and I can say that no traces of use are visible on it, and I use it minimally once a week. I haven’t noticed any significant shrinkage, but generally, I take care of my gis, and stretch the arms and legs before drying, so I’m not authoritative in this case.

The only problem I noticed is that this kimono smells weird, or rather, it stinks for the first few washes. After a few washes, everything is okay, but it can be inconvenient for your teammates.”

The Best Lightweight GI

Fuji Suparaito

Sale
FUJI Suparaito BJJ GI and Martial Arts Uniform - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi With Pearl Weave Jacket, Burgandy, Size A0
  • For the Serious Competitor: Our flexible gi is designed to enhance your skills so you can apply every technique during training & competition with with nothing getting between you and your opponent
  • Lightweight: This FUJI Gi comes with a 350g pearl weave jacket paired with triple-reinforced rip-stop pants and bungee drawstring
  • Premium Material: Our Gi is made with a soft, FUJI premium cotton blend that will work as hard as you do, ensuring a comfortable fit for every grappler
  • The Design You Can Trust: FUJI Jiu Jitsu Gi featuring contrast stitching and decorated with the FUJI and Suparaito logos
  • Competition Approved: FUJI BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) apparel is tested and approved by world-renowed legends like Xande Ribeiro, Renzo Gracie, Rilion Gracie, Roger Gracie, Brazilian Top Team, and thousands of others

I’ve been wearing the Fuji Suparaito for years now, and all I can say is that I’m still impressed with it. This is one of those gis that will undoubtedly fit you perfectly, and in which you’ll feel comfortable at all times. However, Fuji GIs are known for fitting people well. I think the reason is in the shoulders, which have a wider cut, so all those with “shorter shoulders” will be extremely satisfied with this kimono because it will make them look broader.

Considering it’s a lightweight kimono, I can say that the quality is excellent, and it’s a very durable kimono. Shrinkage is almost nonexistent, or at least I haven’t noticed it.

In short, if you want a kimono in which you look good, feel good, and which is lightweight and durable, don’t look any further because you can’t go wrong with this one.

The Best Budget GI

I received this Gi a few months ago, and I must admit I’m thrilled with it considering its price. You really can’t ask for much more for this money because this is a product that will last and in which you’ll move like never before. You’ll feel like you hardly have it on.

Unfortunately, I’ve only worn it about 10 times, so I can’t confirm how durable it actually is. From what I see, all the important parts on this GI are reinforced, so I don’t think there should be any issues with the durability of the kimono.

If you’re looking for a super cheap GI, this is the right choice for you.

Other Valuable GI Options

Since we went over the Estilo 5.0, the updated 6.0 version hit the market. Not only that but I also had the chance of giving it a try. You won’t find many BJJ GI brands out there that take one Gi model to such lengths as Tatami did with the Estilo series. But they can make a quality Gi, as they’ve proven over and over again! The latest Estilo Gi is a long-lasting, pearl weave Gi that is surprisingly light for such material. It is the perfect fit for people that compete often. It fits all competition standards while having a longer lifespan than most others. Plus it won’t make you cut excessive weight. Also from a competition standpoint, the latest Estilo is reinforced right where it needs to be. It also fits perfectly, reducing the opponent’s gripping options as much as humanly possible. Furthermore, the Estilo comes in a larger variety of sizes than other Tatami Gis. As far as this Gi is concerned, every competitor should own at least one. Basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi Properties

OF course, the financial availability of Gi is one of our primary concerns. But, this must not be the only determinant of whether or not you’re going to acquire new armor. There are a few more factors that massively influence how a BJJ gi is going to fit you.

  • BJJ Gi sizes range from A0 to A5. The letter A stands for adult sizing. The number is a representation of the actual size of the Gi, in terms of adults. These are just the main numbers, as there are categories that are in between. For example, some brands offer sizes like A 1,5, etc. Remember to always check the size chart of the brand you’re considering buying. While you’re looking at size, also make sure you choose the correct BJJ Gi size that fits you. You want neither a tight BJJ Gi nor a very baggy one.
  • The rate of shrinkage is the rate at which the Gi is going to get smaller after you wash it. This plays a huge role if you’re at the upper border of a Gi size. For example, buying an A3 Gi might not be smart if you end up looking at A4 sizes after washing them a few times. Nowadays, most Gis is pre-shrunk. However, always leave a little room for skepticism as a small shrinkage rate might still be in play.
  • BJJ Gi Color is important if you are a competitor. Later on, we’re going to discuss competition rules more, but for now, know that you’ll be limited to three main colors. If you’re Gi is not white, black, or blue, you won’t be able to compete in it. Check out the IBJJF Gi color rules here. When you train, you can go for any color or combination of colors you like.
  • Collar build is an important part of every premium GI. Most BJJ GI collars are filled with cotton or rubber. If the collar is thick it will be harder to choke you because gripping is much harder with a thick collar. Especially those filled with rubber foam. However, this is not something everyone would agree to. It’s not the case with thin collars, but they are harder to keep in place. The only advantage of thick collars is when someone tries to choke you with them it will be hard for them to keep their hand on your carotid arteries.

How to Choose the best size for your GI

If you train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu selecting the proper size is very important. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis is usually not too baggy, it’s all in the fit. You don’t want to be swimming in fabric, but you don’t want to feel like your outfit is compressing you either. Luckily, most BJJ brands offer size charts for every model they make so you can look up your body measurements online or by talking to someone at the academy store. There tend to be two ruler sizes: height and weight, so if you’re a short/lightweight guy with long arms or a girl with a small waist – go for a smaller size so it will perfectly fit your proportions, while people with a longer torso, wider shoulders or larger waist should go for a bigger one.

BJJ GI Weaves and Fabrics:

Single Weave

Best BJJ Gi review

Single Weave is the most basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi weave. It is a popular type of weave among grapplers, mostly due to its price. It is very similar to the double weave but with the added benefit of less weight. This makes them perfect for competitors or training in hot areas. One more category of grapplers that can consider a single weave Gi are beginners. It is affordable, comfortable, and easy to take care of. The drawback of this Gi is obviously, durability. Furthermore, Single Weave Gi offers a good gripping surface for your opponent which can also be a hindrance.

Double Weave

Best BJJ Gi review

Double Weave Gi contains the same pattern found in a single weave Gi. The main difference, though, is that the single weave is repeated. This feature makes the double weave one of the best out there. It provides more thickness, and durability and is heavier compared to a single weave. It is very difficult for opponents to establish grips on a double weave Gi. The thickness which may make it hard to wear is the only con of this weave.

Gold Weave

Best BJJ Gi review

Gold Weave is a combination of double weave and single weave. Its primary function is to take only the best of both and discard the useless. it has the thickness and durability of a double weave but possesses the light weight of a single weave. In the modern-day game, many competitors go for the gold weave. It offers a lot of advantages and next to no faults. What it also does, is cost more than a single and double weave. In the end, the gold weave is strong enough to withstand competitions and everyday training.

Pearl Weave

Pearl Weave

Pearl Weave is currently the most used weave in Jiu-Jitsu GI production. The main advantage of the pearl weave is that it’s durable even when used with low GSM fabrics. Being a very durable weave it’s well known for being very comfortable to wear. If you can afford it, don’t think twice.

Ripstop

Ripstop

Ripstop material is a great way to reinforce the materials used for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu GI. It’s used in the way that the original fabric is reinforced with another material to increase its resistance to ripping and tearing. It is usually used on BJJ GI pants to make them more durable. It’s a square pattern that looks like it’s added to the main Jiu-Jitsu GI fabric.

Which Fabric and Weave to Look For When Buying a new GI

This is where most people go wrong. As you become more experienced in Jiu-Jitsu, you’ll discover where your desire lies in terms of BJJ Gi material. For now, you need to be aware of the basic options and what each of them brings. Honestly, considering the average cost, what people mostly look for is durability. This is very closely tied to the material and weave the Gi is made of.

The thickness of the Gi is one more very important property that people should consider. The thicker the BJJ Gi, the harder it is for the opponent to grip and manipulate. The tougher it is for them to close their fist, the better for you. However, thickness often time means more weight, so be careful. The thickness is determined by its weave. There are several main types of weaves common to Jiu-Jitsu Gis.

If you train in grappling, chances are you will sweat a lot. Being sweaty is not bad by itself – it’s the body’s way of cooling down, but if your gi gets soggy and sticks to your skin then it becomes unpleasant. There are several types of materials that Jiu-Jitsu Gis can be made from cotton, pearl weave, gold weave, etc. If you want to get rid of all the moisture as fast as possible, go with 100% cotton or ripstop pants and lightweight material for the top. And even if you don’t like ripstops because they make a lot of noise when rolling on them, at least try to get one that has a double layer on the knees and seat

Competition GI Hacks

When you compete, there are several guidelines you need to follow with your BJJ Gi. It has to fit the standards set by the organizers. It also has to give you every advantage over your opponent. There are a few aspects of a premium jiu-jitsu gi that you have to consider in this sense.

Rule-wise, you need to have either a blue, black, or white Gi. Apart from the patches that come with it, you most likely won’t be allowed anything more. So make sure you do not have an academy or personal patches on your competition Gi. Furthermore, you need to have the size and state of your Gi right. Your sleeves can’t be too long or too short. This also holds true for your pants. Furthermore, you need to have a clean GI with absolutely no tears anywhere. Otherwise, you won’t be able to even enter the competition area.

The best bet for competitors is going for a lightweight Gi. When you cut weight, this is going to come in really handy. Furthermore, any Gi that makes your opponents struggle for grips is a great option. The BJJ gi also needs to fit you perfectly and not impede your movement. Look for a Gi with narrower sleeves. do not forget the rules and shrinkage rate, though. In terms of Gi pants, what you want is durability. Always go for ripstop versions.

BJJ Gi History

The Gi is not specific to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Gi, or Kimono was the traditional outfit of the Japanese samurai. In those days, different colored Gi’s demonstrated affiliation with different clans. Those Gi’s were nothing like the ones we know today, though. The modern concept of the Gi is mainly due to Judo’s founder, Dr. Jigoro Kano. His modifications resulted in a tighter Gi, that fit better and was also sawn differently.

This model of the Gi is what we still have today, with certain small modifications. Actually, Gis for different martial arts has the same base but different specifications. Compared to Kano’s model, the BJJ Gi has tighter sleeves and is made from a much sturdier material.

In the beginning, BJJ only had white Gis, just like Judo. It was somewhere around the 1970s that people started experimenting with different colored GIs. As the competitive scene of Jiu-Jitsu grew, so did the interest of different businesses. This, in turn, resulted in the first patches of sponsors appearing to the Gis of competitors. As we all know, today’s BJJ Gi variations are endless, although only a few fit competition requirements.

What is a good BJJ GI?

It’s hard to answer what is a good BJJ GI as it depends mainly on your affinities. There are many different options from fabrics to colors. So, the answer would be that the good BJJ GI is the one that suits you best and makes you feel good while wearing it.

What Color BJJ GI should I get?

If you want to compete there are only three colors approved by IBJJF, white, royal blue, and black. In case, you’re not a competitor you can choose any color you want. The most popular color for non-competitors is Navy Blue.

How tight should BJJ Gi be?

BJJ Gi shouldn’t be too tight or too loose. Tight Gi will greatly impact your moving ability while loose Gi will make you “easy to catch”, giving your opponent an advantage. Make sure to buy Gi with a wider groin so it won’t limit your leg’s range of motion.

How long do BJJ Gis Last

BJJ Gi usually lasts around 2 years if you use it regularly. Its duration is mostly about the time spent on the mat. Pants usually last less than a jacket but you can purchase them separately.

How Many Gis Should I Own?

It depends on how many times a week you’re training. It also depends on GI weight weather. If you dry the GI in the fresh air the heavier kimono takes a long time to dry depending on the weather. So, having 2 BJJ Gis is the optimal number if you want to have fresh Gi for every training session.

How much does BJJ Gi cost?

The cost of the BJJ Gi is somewhere around $50 to $200. Simple Gis will cost around $50-$70 while better-looking and more durable Gis will cost around $150-$200. Some GIs cost over $200 but it’s usually about the brands and limited edition series.

Can white belts wear black BJJ Gi?

Yes, of course! White belts are allowed to wear any Gi color in most academies. Although some BJJ academies like AOJ allow only white Gi color.

Does the color of your GI matter in BJJ?

No! The color of your BJJ Gi doesn’t matter by any means. The only restriction on colors is that IBJJF and a lot of other BJJ competition federations only allow white, royal blue, and black Gi colors.

Should I wash my GI after every use?

Absolutely! In the BJJ training session, you change partners, roll on the mats with others and you’ll sweat a lot. Your Gi will be full of bacteria and dirt. While it’s not good for your health you will also smell bad if you show up with unwashed Gi.

How do I choose a BJJ Gi?

You’ll choose your GI while having your affinities on your mind and taking the GI you like the most. Watch for:

  • GI Weave type – choose the weave of your preference. Durability, weight, comfort, etc. depend heavily on GI weave type.
  • Reinforcements – Reinforced knees, stitchings, or collar improves the GI quality and wearing experience.
  • Weight – People usually choose lightweight Gis for summer and heavy Gis for winter.
  • Size – Make sure you check the chart sizes of your chosen gi for the best fit
  • Color – White, Royal Blue, or black if you’re a competitor, any other color if you’re not a competitor.
  • looks – If you look good you feel good, and if you feel good you roll good.

Do you Wear clothes under your Gi?

Yes, you need to wear a rashguard under your Gi jacket and underwear under your Gi pants. Some people wear compression pants under the Gi, especially in the wintertime but it’s uncommon. Also, wearing shorts under Gi pants makes it easier for you to switch from Gi to No-Gi training and sparring.

What is the best weave for a BJJ gi?

Pearl Weave is the best weave because even with the low GSM it’s still strong and durable and can withstand everyday training and competition. It’s the most used weave nowadays.

Closing Thoughts On The Best BJJ GI

Is it possible to recommend the best BJJ gi? One that will fit your body type, your personal needs, and preferences best out of all the other hundreds of gis on the market?

The answer is no. Every GI, even premium GIs is different for everyone because every human being has a different morphology (body type), and physique, and their way of using them is also specific. If you are short, have wide shoulders but a small waist, have long limbs with a short torso – so basically an X-shaped body type – you can’t expect a kimono made for someone who fits into O or square shapes to fit you perfectly even if they’re labeled as “unisex” size.

Therefore, I can just give some advice from my experience and hope it will be helpful, but in the end, you will have to try it out to see what fits your body type best. Also, if after trying several models you don’t like any of them, then look for other brands.

Boxing Gloves Buying Guide

If you are choosing your first pair of boxing gloves then there are a few things you need to keep in mind. Keeping these things in mind will let you choose the right gloves without wasting too much time, money, and effort.

Here are the main features you should look for in boxing gloves for youth.

Price of the Gloves

Price is the most important feature to consider when choosing boxing gloves. The best kids’ gloves are affordable and have a wide range of prices, so you will be able to find something that fits your budget.

The price should reflect the quality and features. More expensive gloves will usually provide more protection than cheaper ones, but it doesn’t mean, but this is not always the case.

Size of the Gloves

The size of the gloves is another important feature. The right fit will provide more comfort and better protection than a glove that fits poorly. It is very difficult to get an accurate measurement for kids’ hands, so manufacturers usually recommend choosing one size larger as they may grow into them over time.

If you are buying smaller gloves then it’s important to remember that the hand will grow quicker than the fingers so it is better for them if there’s some room in the glove.

If your child has a small hand then you should consider buying gloves one size smaller as well.”

Padding of the Gloves

The padding inside the gloves is a hugely important feature. The more protection they offer, the better and safer your child will be when sparring or boxing on heavy bags. The best gloves for kids have removable foam pads which can make them very flexible in their use.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What size boxing gloves are best for kids?

The best boxing gloves for kids in 2023 are generally between 12 to 14 inches. Besides that, the weight of the glove is also important and will depend on your child’s age, size, and strength. Some brands offer a range of weights with their kid’s gloves so that you can pick one depending on what suits them at different ages.

What size boxing gloves should a 12-year-old get?

Many people in the boxing community recommend a 12-year-old to start with 16oz gloves. The weight and size of gloves will be determined by their age, height, gender, build, and hand measurements.

For example, if they are not yet fully developed or have small hands then you may want to go lighter so that there is less chance of injury.

How do kids wear boxing gloves?

There are many different ways to wear boxing gloves. Some people prefer to place the glove on with one hand, while others prefer to place both hands inside. Always make sure they are wearing it the right way with their thumb on top of the wrist strap and an inch away from the end of their fingers.

What age is 6oz boxing gloves for?

6oz boxing gloves are recommended for kids who weigh less than 90 pounds. They are used for training and practice, not sparring or competitions. The best thing about 6oz boxing gloves is that they are lightweight and do not overprotect the hand.

Should I get 12 oz or 14 oz boxing gloves?

12 oz boxing gloves are great for beginner fighters who want to get into the sport but don’t have a lot of experience yet. 12 oz is easy enough on your hands and wrists that you can do an extended training session without feeling too tired or sore.

14 oz gloves, however, are better for intermediate boxers who’ve been doing it for a while and know their limits because they’re heavier than 12oz boxing gloves.

The extra weight allows them to deliver more power in each punch while still providing protection to both the wrist and hand from injury as well.

How do you choose boxing gloves for kids?

There are many different things to consider when choosing boxing gloves for kids. The first thing you need to think about is the size of the glove and how much room your child has in their hands because they can grow quickly, especially before puberty.

Next, you want to make sure that there are no sharp edges or points on the inside of the glove where it wraps around the wrist—this could cause injury if not addressed properly.

Finally, ensure that there’s a sufficient amount of padding so wrists and knuckles don’t get injured during sparring sessions with other children (and adults). Your goal should be finding an affordable pair of gloves that will last them through all stages as they develop into more advanced boxers in later years.

Final Words

If you are looking for a pair of gloves to help your child learn the basics, these three may be good options. The Cheerwing Kids boxing gloves will provide protection while still allowing them to feel what they’re hitting.

The Venum contender youth boxing gloves offer padding and ventilation at an affordable price point that any parent can afford. For those who want their children’s first glove experience to have some style, look no further than Everlast laceless gloves which come in all kinds of colors!

Let us know if we can answer any additional questions about selecting the right pair of kid’s boxing gloves or helping with training programs in your community.

Talk about a sport taking a physical toll! We’re quite used to baseball players having shoulder problems. Bad knees in soccer players are no big headline. But what is an injury most specific to BJJ? Let me make this a little bit clearer. What is an injury most specific to Gi BJJ? Yeah, the whole body gets a beating and you might be hard-pressed to find an answer if you’ve been enjoying the Gentle Art (pun intended) in the Gi longer than 3 years. However, the moment you try and type back an answer you’ll get on – the fingers. Gi player’s fingers are so destroyed they literally have to be held together by BJJ finger tape.

As every Gi player (and Judoka, for that matter) can testify, grappling after a few years is impossible without the heavy use of BJJ finger tape. Whether it is used on a certain finger, joints, a few fingers or all of them you’ll see it everywhere. It is so prevalent that people sometimes mistake it for a fashion statement. However, arthritis is a real problem in the BJJ world and tape sure provides a way to deal with it. At least in the short term.

What Happens To The Fingers?

People that train exclusively (or just often) in Jiu-Jitsu Gi, base their game around gripping the material very much. Sleeve grips, pant grips, lapel grips, belt grips, you name it. Every part of the Gi is fair game and people use it to the maximum to get an advantage. Gi manufacturers even try to make sturdier Gis make gripping them harder. This results in peoples’ fingers cracking and snapping all over. Before long, you’re taping your fingers together just to be able to train.

The repeated trauma of constant pressure on the joint, as well as frequent minor dislocations, is a great recipe for arthritis. The joints primarily swell up, with inflammation being the body’s preferred answer to the inflicted trauma. Inflammation is caused by the constant tugging and pulling that puts enormous strain on the finger joints. This constant inflammation and trauma result in the reduction of cartilage in the joints, which is the definition of arthritis.

Arthritis, or osteoarthritis, is a degenerative joint disease, in the case of BJJ caused by constant, gradual wear-and-tear. The condition may include the formation of bone spurs, bony enlargements, and profuse ligament and tendon damage. The end result – pain. And by pain, I mean constant pain that’s greatly exacerbated by gripping again and again with sore fingers. This is where BJJ finger tape comes in.

What is BJJ Finger Taping?

BJJ finger taping is the practice of wrapping your fingers with tape to protect them from injury and discomfort during training and competition. It involves wrapping the tape tightly around your fingers, leaving the knuckles and joints exposed for flexibility.

There are several types of finger tape available for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, and each type of tape has its own unique features and benefits, so it’s essential to find the one that works best for you.

Proper BJJ finger taping is crucial for BJJ practitioners to prevent finger injuries and preserve joint health. It’s also an effective way to enhance your grip and support during training and competition.

With the right technique and products, you can enjoy a long and injury-free career in this exciting and challenging sport.

Why Tape Your Fingers for BJJ?

Firstly, finger injuries are common in BJJ, and they can be excruciatingly painful. Finger taping provides added support to your fingers, making them more resistant to injuries such as sprains, dislocations, and fractures. Taping can also help prevent cuts and bruises on your fingers, which can result from gripping your opponent’s gi or skin.

Secondly, BJJ finger taping can reduce inflammation and soreness. The constant pressure and gripping in BJJ can cause inflammation in the joints, which can lead to soreness and pain. Taping your fingers can help to stabilize the joints, reducing the risk of inflammation and pain.

Thirdly, taping your fingers can help to preserve joint health. Over time, the constant pressure and gripping in BJJ can lead to joint damage and arthritis. Proper finger taping can help to keep your joints stable and healthy, reducing the risk of chronic conditions.

Lastly, proper BJJ finger taping can help prolong your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career. By reducing the risk of finger injuries and preserving joint health, you can continue to train and compete at a high level for longer. Playing positions like spider guard becomes a lot easier when your fingers are nice and secure. In fact, BJJ finger tape is now an essential part of grapplers’ Jiu-Jitsu gear.

Best Finger Tape On The Market

Finger tapping for BJJ starts with one very important step – choosing the best tape available to you. You’d be surprised how much pain you can spare yourself if you start using BJJ finger tape as soon as you notice the first signs of arthritis. So let’s take a look at a few solid tape products available on the market:

#1 EVOLV Magic Finger

Evolv Magic Finger Tape
Evolv Magic Finger Tape

This tape is a bit on the thicker side, but as you’ll see later on, this might be just what you’re looking for. It is 3/4” wide and very strong, thanks to the thickness. A great aspect of this tape is that it stretches quite a bit. This is mostly due to the material. The Magic Finger tape is an innovative combination of Latex and Rubber, offering unique properties. The tape has an impressively tight seal, even in very sweaty conditions. It’s simple in terms of design and colors, but the top class in terms of providing the service it is intended for. Available in bright green.

#2 Johnson And Johnson Coach Sports Tape

Johnson And Johnson Coach Sports Tape
Johnson And Johnson Coach Sports Tape

This is one of the thickest tapes available, standing at 1 and 1/2” wide. Very useful for wrapping larger areas, such as toes, or for the buddy-system. A great caveat of this tape is its price – it is the cheapest on this list. It holds really well and also provides an additional gripping surface. On a slightly negative note, it’s is short and does not last long when used constantly. However, this is often solved by the length of the tape which comes at a staggering 40 yards.

The material of the Johnson And Johnson BJJ finger tape is rubber, making it perfect for grapplers. It is going to keep your joints stable while also providing enough flexibility for efficient gripping. The fabric is breathable and does not retain moisture. Comes in white color and is made in the US. One pack of the tape contains four BJJ finger tape rolls.

#3 TapTape Fission  BJJ Finger Tape

TapTape Fission Finger Tape

A 15-yard roll with a 0.3-inch width is always a good starting point in the search for the optimal BJJ finger tape. It has a high thread count and will last for a long time. It’s not too thick, which makes it great for wrapping the joints of the smaller fingers. It performs admirably under the harsh conditions of sparring, holding impressively. It’s made of “low slipping” material which gives it its tight holding properties. The secret behind TapTape’s success is the high thread count of the tape. This makes it next to impossible to tear it once you put it in place. It also means unraveling is not an option. It is very easy to apply and even easier to remove, which is often not the case with sturdy finger tapes.

#4 Power Train Finger Tape

This is as minimalist BJJ finger tape as they get. Personally, I find this to be a huge benefit. It comes in very simple packaging and only in the color black. No wonder it is one of the favorites of grapplers worldwide. It’s a non-elastic tape providing maximum compression and great tension. It’s sturdier than the others on this list making it the best choice for immobilization of joints. It provides great value for the price since it comes with two rolls of tape in the package.

The material is 100% cotton, which is great for those with sensitivity to Latex. The adhesive is extra strong and also has water-resistant properties. The tape also provides enhanced breathability, even when completely covered in sweat. It has very little elasticity as it is meant to provide massive support of the joints instead. Maximum compression is guaranteed.

#5 Armadillo Skin Finger Tape

Armadillo Skin Finger Tape
Armadillo Skin Finger Tape

The “Armadillo Skin” BJJ  Finger Tape is an ultra-strong tape for grappling, made entirely of cotton. The tape has dimensions of 0.3 in x 15 yds per roll, with a total of 6 rolls included in one pack. This tape has one of the best prices for such a “bulk” buy. The Armadillo has the incredible property of being easy to tear with your fingers as you’re setting it up, but able to stay snug when you tape it around your finger joints. The adhesive is very high-grade, allowing maximal support while not leaving any residue after you take it off. Completely latex-free, available in white.

#6 Athletic Tape Elite Sports

1st Elite is a brand that has athletes covered in all possible areas. In terms of finger tape, they offer a very high-quality product. Once again, it is a 100% cotton product, entirely Latex-free. Their new and improved adhesive is made of Zinc Oxide, making it extremely friendly to your skin. Even people with sensitive skin and certain skin conditions can freely use this tape without any adverse effects.

The non-porous tape is remarkable when it comes to staying put. The adhesive is very strong, yet is easily removable once you’re done. The dimensions are 1.5′ x 10-yard rolls, and one pack has an amazing 32 rolls! A bit wider than most, but it does give you the option to cut according to needs, or tapes up larger body parts, like feet, ankles, and wrists. The tape comes with guaranteed satisfaction. This includes a 100% money back or replacement warranty.

#7 Power Splint Finger Tape

Power Splint Finger Tape

With the Power splint tape, you get a pack of three tapes, each 1/3 inch wide. This one is perfect for grapplers because it is thin and incredibly strong. Plus, one roll is 44 yards long, make Power Splint the longest BJJ finger tape available! It is really easy to tear and put on, as well as discard after use. Still,  it is one of the tightest fitting finger tapes ever, and no amount of Gi rolling or competing is ever going to affect it. The full range of motion is guaranteed.

#8 Gold BJJ Jiu Jitsu Tape

Gold BJJ Jiu Jitsu Tape
Gold BJJ Jiu Jitsu Tape

The Gold BJJ Finger tape is a strong grappling tape sized 1/2″ x 30′. It is perfect for finger protection in any kind of grappling martial art. The tape is available in three different packs, each containing a different number of rolls. Namely, you can get 3,6 or 12 rolls per package.

The tape’s adhesive is strong and intended to stay put specifically during grappling. Each roll is 10 yards long, meaning that you can get a lot of tapes, depending on the package option you choose. Original technology means that the tape won’t budge under any circumstances, including moisture. The thickness of this tape is also a great caveat as it allows you to tape different joints, as opposed to only your fingers. perfect for tapping toes.

How To Use BJJ Finger Tape

Now that tape selection is out of the way, let’s look at the methods that’ll keep your fingers from falling apart. We already covered using the best tape available in order to avoid bad support or unwinding of the wraps. The next rule of thumb is to use a lot. Do not be afraid to commit to taping your fingers tight. In those terms, layers are more important than single strips. The reason is simple. BJJ finger tape seals better against itself than the skin of the fingers. And lastly, do not overtighten the tape. If you restrict circulation you’ll only make things worse, so provide support without cutting blood flow off.

1. X-Taping

For me, X-taping is the method of choice. It provides me with great support while allowing the fingers as much mobility as possible. It is very durable and much tighter than single joint BJJ finger taping. The X pattern allows the wrapping to support itself along with the fingers.

The X-taping pattern requires long pieces of tape, which is what must be considered when choosing a tape. The wrap starts on the side of a knuckle and after a couple of circles around it goes on to the other side crossing over the palm side of the joint. After a few more circles it goes back forming the X.

2. Тhe Buddy System

Buddy taping is the best method to support really bad finger joints. It can be used with both single joint control, or X-taping as the base. In simple terms, the buddy system means you tape two of your fingers to one another. This provides extra support, much like a sling does for a broken bone.

Despite being the preferred method for competitors, this is the safest method to use for rolling as well. The small finger is a great example of a disaster waiting to happen. It gets caught inside a sleeve or pants so often that it can get really painful really fast. As such, buddy BJJ finger taping can keep it as safe as possible. Kurt will show you the way how:

3. Restrictive Taping

This method is great to tightly immobilize fingers. It’s intended to allow injured fingers to heal, rather than provide both support and mobility for chronically hurt ones. The problem with immobilizing only one finger or toe is that it makes it easier to get caught in a Gi. The best advice is to stay off the mats until the pain subsides and then use x-taping and/or the buddy system.

If you’re intent on training with a fresh injury, though, your best bet is to use restrictive BJJ finger taping and enforce it with the buddy system.

4. Taping The Thumb

The thumb presents a real challenge when it comes to tape. As such, in the events of a thumb injury, the above approach of staying away from the mats is by far your best option. It is extremely easy to re-injury the thumb by getting it caught up in the Gi. If your thumb is no longer in pain and you can train with it, then be ready to use a lot of tape. Also, make time for taping is as it is not easy.

Here’s a great video showing you how to do it:

Tips for Using BJJ Finger Tape

Properly taping your fingers for Jiu-Jitsu is essential for getting the most out of your BJJ training and competition. Here are some tips and tricks for using athletic tapes effectively:

  • Store your tape properly: Store your tape in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming too sticky or losing its adhesive properties.
  • Replace your tape regularly: Replace your tape regularly to ensure that it’s providing optimal support and grip. Tapes can lose their adhesive properties or become worn out with use, making them less effective.
  • Apply tape properly: Apply tape in a way that provides optimal support and grip. Make sure to wrap the tape tightly around your finger, leaving the knuckles and joints exposed for flexibility.
  • Remove tape safely: Remove tape carefully to avoid causing skin irritation or discomfort. Use a tape cutter to cut the tape off cleanly without pulling at your skin. Wash off the sticky residue as soon as possible.
  • Consider other products: Consider using other products in conjunction with finger tape to enhance your grip and support. Finger braces, hand wraps and grip enhancers can provide additional support and grip for your fingers.

BJJ Fingers: How to Prevent and Treat Common Injuries and Conditions

If you practice combat sports, (or even other sports, such as rock climbing) you know how important your fingers are for gripping, grappling and defending. You also know how painful and frustrating it can be when you get an injured finger. In this section, we will explain some of the common injuries and conditions that affect BJJ fingers, and how to prevent and treat them effectively.

Common Jiu-Jitsu Finger Injuries and Conditions

Some of the most common BJJ finger injuries and conditions are:

  • Sprains and strains: These are injuries to the ligaments and tendons that connect the bones and muscles of the fingers. They can occur when you twist, bend or pull your fingers too hard or too fast, or when you get caught in a submission or a grip. Sprains and strains can cause swelling, bruising, stiffness and pain in the affected finger.
  • Fractures and dislocations: These are injuries to the bones and joints of the fingers. They can occur when you hit, crush or bend your fingers with a lot of force, or when you fall on your hand or wrist. Fractures and dislocations can cause severe pain, deformity, numbness and loss of function in the affected finger.
  • Arthritis: This is a condition that causes inflammation and degeneration of the cartilage and bone of the finger joints. It can occur as a result of chronic wear and tear, overuse, injury or infection. Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and reduced range of motion in the affected finger.

How to Prevent BJJ Finger Injuries and Conditions

The best way to prevent bjj finger injuries and conditions is to take care of your fingers before, during and after training. Here are some preventive measures and best practices to follow:

  • Warm up properly: Before you start training, make sure to warm up your fingers with some gentle stretches and movements. This will increase blood flow, lubricate the joints and prepare the muscles for action.
  • Stretch regularly: After you finish training, make sure to stretch your fingers again with some gentle twists and bends. This will release tension, improve flexibility and prevent stiffness.
  • Strengthen your fingers: You can also do some exercises to improve finger strength by working on your muscles and tendons. For example, you can squeeze a stress ball, do finger push-ups or use a hand gripper. This will increase endurance, stability and power in your fingers.
  • Use protective BJJ gear: One of the most effective ways to prevent BJJ finger injuries and conditions is to use protective gear such as BJJ finger taping. Taping fingers BJJ can help support, stabilize, and protect your fingers from damage. You can use different types of tape for Jiu-Jitsu depending on your preference and needs. For example, you can use armadillo skin finger tape for extra durability and comfort, or gold BJJ tape for extra flexibility and a strong grip.

In Conclusion

Finger taping is an essential aspect of BJJ training that can make a significant difference in your performance and longevity in the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting out, taking proper care of your fingers should be a top priority. By using high-quality finger tape and following the tips and techniques outlined in this article, you can prevent injury, maintain joint health, and improve your grip strength and technique.

With so many different BJJ finger taping options available on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for your needs. However, by considering factors such as adhesive strength, flexibility, and sweat resistance, you can find the perfect finger tape that works for you.

Ultimately, the benefits of BJJ finger taping far outweigh the minor inconvenience of applying and removing the tape. By taking the time to properly tape your fingers and care for your hands, you’ll be able to enjoy BJJ training for years to come. Remember to always listen to your body and consult a medical professional if you experience any pain or discomfort during training.

This collection of products is one of our favorites because it provides you with a lot of support and compression.

The WIMI Sports & Fitness Tennis Elbow Brace and Compression Sleeve are made for sore and exhausted muscles and serious joint problems like advanced tennis elbow.

These two things work together to give your elbow a lot of support, keeping it in place and preventing it from wobbling or going in the wrong direction.

Review:

This sleeve is made of 4-way stretch material, one of the features you can appreciate. This means that this sleeve is designed to extend and offer a wide range of motion while also providing sufficient protection for several conditions.

Another advantage of the CopperJoint Compression Elbow Sleeve is that the materials used in its construction are specifically engineered to wick away moisture.

When you work out, you can sweat, but this material is built to wick away sweat so that your muscles do not get too sweaty and uncomfortable.

With a price tag of about $20, it is a great purchase to make. This elbow compression sleeve is very convenient, stretchy, itch-free, moisture-wicking, and anti-odor.

It’s perfect for those with minor aches and pains in their elbow joints. Since it only offers light support and has been known to fall slightly, it is a little lower down the list.

  • It does not limit motion range.
  • It is durable.

The DashSport Tennis Elbow Brace will set you back a little less than $20. It comes with a reasonable price for an elbow compression sleeve that offers light to moderate compression.

While the compression and support features of this sleeve are light and low, it does an excellent job of allowing you to maintain your entire range of motion, and it is also very lightweight and easy to wear.

Review:

The Copper Compression Recovery Elbow Sleeve gives you a good amount of compression and support. This sleeve is designed to aid in the support of stiff and swollen joints.

By providing an increased volume of blood, oxygen, and nutrients to the scene, the compression benefits increase blood flow in the infected region, which helps to heal injured and swollen muscles in a limited time.

Its support helps to hold the elbow joint in place while also reducing swelling and speeding up the healing process.

The Copper Compression Recovery Elbow Sleeve is highly recommended by many people who suffer from tendonitis, tennis elbow, arthritis, and other joint problems.

Many people even recommend it because it keeps the elbows and arms warm, and warmth is another factor that aids in the loosening and healing of sore muscles.

It will cost you under $20, which is a very reasonable price for this piece. It is a little less expensive than some of the other options available, which could be a plus for some people.

Although the Copper Compression Recovery Elbow Sleeve provides adequate support and compression, it falls short of some higher-end versions.

While this sleeve offers some good value, it is one of the more limited choices available. It is, however, outstanding in terms of maintaining the maximum range of motion.

The Copper Compression Elbow Sleeve is made of high-quality materials. All of the materials used in the construction are made to be durable and long-lasting.

The Copper Compression Recovery Elbow Sleeve is made to provide light support for sore and stiff muscles, as well as painful joints, while still allowing you to move freely.

You should be aware that this sleeve’s support and compression are not as strong as some of the other models on this list, which explains why it is rated lower.

Pros

  • It supports injured joints and muscles.
  • It is available in several sizes.
  • It reduces muscle and joint inflammation.

Cons

  • It offers only limited support and compression.

No products found.

Features:

  • It is quite flexible.
  • It is machine washable.
  • It offers just the right amount of compression.

Review:

The Copper Compression Gear Premium Fit Recovery Elbow Sleeve is suitable because it focuses on proper fit and performance.

This particular sleeve is made of highly elastic materials that ensure a secure, non-slip fit. This thing isn’t going to fall off your arm when you’re using it.

The Copper Compression Gear Premium Fit Recovery Elbow Sleeve’s materials are also substantial and long-lasting. This item will not tear shortly, and it is also machine washable, making it very easy to clean.

It is also temperature controlling and will bring a good amount of heat to your sore and tired muscles to help keep them loose and limber, but it will not make your arms too hot and sweaty.

The Copper Compression Gear Premium Fit Recovery Elbow Sleeve also has no seams, which means it won’t irritate your muscles. Without a doubt, this compression sleeve was built with comfort in mind.

The Copper Compression Gear Premium Fit Recovery Elbow Sleeve is one of our favorites, particularly because it’s only $20. This is a reasonable price for a compression sleeve that provides a reasonable amount of support and compression.

It is ranked higher than the other alternative because it provides significantly more support and compression.

Still, it is also relatively low on the list because it does not have the best range of motion.

The Copper Compression Gear Premium Fit Recovery Elbow Sleeve has a good build quality. This item is made to be highly comfortable to wear.

It’s perfect for temperature regulation, it’s smooth for a pain-free experience, and it won’t fall down.

It also offers moderate support and adequate compression, but it isn’t the best for maintaining the full range of motion.

Pros

  • It provides sufficient joint support.
  • It has a tight and non-slippery fit.
  • It is excellent in increasing blood flow.

Cons

  • It limits the range of motion.

Buying Guide for Choosing the Best Elbow Compression Sleeves

Most elbow compression sleeves are quite reasonable, but you need to make sure that you are investing in the right product.

So, here are some of the factors you need to consider before buying a compression sleeve for your elbow. Lets take a look!

Comfort

First of all, be sure to go for the sleeve that brings comfort to your elbow.

Make sure to choose a sleeve that controls moisture well because too much moisture causes irritation, and you definitely wouldnt like it. On a side note, buying an elbow compression sleeve that is machine washable is a plus!

Also, a compression sleeve with no seams is preferable because it eliminates the possibility of bits of material rubbing against your skin.

All in all, look for a sleeve that is good for temperature regulation, keeping your muscles warm without overheating them.

Flexibility and Support

Another thing that you need to consider is the support and flexibility that an elbow compression sleeve offers. A thicker, tighter, and more supportive sleeve provides several benefits.

But never forget that these products are mainly manufactured for athletes – people who have a full range of motion and desire to be flexible.

The lower your range of motion is, the smoother the sleeve is and the more compression.

If you want to fully enjoy wearing an elbow sleeve, you need to determine whether you need little or too much support.

The best elbow compression sleeves are the ones that deliver a decent amount of mobility, allowing you to move around freely, but these are few and far between. On the other hand, thinner sleeves tend to be less durable as they contain less material.

Slippage

Lowquality elbow compression sleeves cant stick around longer, and they keep slipping. This is a huge problem, especially when you are practicing.

Greater arm size necessitates greater sleeve size and vice versa. A sleeve that just keeps slipping away will only irritate you during the practice.

The best elbow compression sleeve is the one with the right size, so you can have enough compression as per your arms size.

That way, these sleeves are not too stretchy or slippery.

Frequently Asked Questions

01 – How long can I wear a compression sleeve?

Wear an elbow compression sleeve for around three to five weeks to completely heal the injury. However, make sure not to wear it all the time because it may affect the natural healing of the tendons. Use these sleeves only when essential.

02 – Do these sleeves really reduce pain?

Elbow compression sleeves have been used for years to heal and reduce pain. It is a scientifically proven method for conditions, such as Golfers elbow and tennis elbow.

These sleeves apply pressure to the elbow muscle to improve blood circulation, leading to reduced pain.

03 – How tight should these sleeves be?

When wearing an elbow compression sleeve, be sure to wear it not too tight around your elbow and wrist.

You should feel compression uniformly over the entire sleeve; otherwise, the entire area would be swelling.

Final Thoughts:

To sum it up, wearing elbow compression sleeves is an excellent way to deal with elbow injuries or pain. These sleeves offer various advantages, such as quick injury recovery, pain management, and joint issue control.

Choosing the right compression sleeve for your elbow is highly important to enjoy its benefits.

What is the one joint that you absolutely can’t train BJJ without? Well, ok, there are two of them, if we’re being precise. If you manage to injure an ankle, elbow, or wrist, you’ll still manage to at least drill in a way that keeps the injured joint out of harm’s way. You can even train around some spinal injuries, although that’s not advisable. However, if you injure a knee, or God forbid, both of them at the same time, you’ll be hard-pressed to find an effective way to train. On top of that, recovering from knee injuries on knees takes time and careful planning. And if you’re serious about staying injury free, nothing but the best BJJ Knee Pads should be on your mind and shopping list.

As far as the absolute best BJJ knee pads go, we’ve got you covered. The most comprehensive guide for your supportive knee gear shopping in 2021 is below. In cases when you’re looking to prevent knee issues, or even more importantly, are coming back from one, knee pads should be your best friends when stepping on the mats. But acquiring such gear is not an easy thing to do. First, you need to know what it is exactly what you’re looking for. Next, you need to know which type of knee support you need for a specific situation. After all, the knees get a lot of stress during grappling training, and you need to take proper care of them in the long run.

Best BJJ Knee Pads

Let’s now take a look at the best BJJ knee pads that are a great fit for any grappler. Some of the products featured below are for overall use, while others are very specific. One thing is for sure, they all work and are going to provide you with maximal knee protection and support. Take it from someone who has knee issues and is currently recovering from a serious ligament and muscle injury on one knee. I’ve at least tried most of the products on the list and am, in fact, still using one on a regular day-to-day basis.

Bodyprox Protective Knee Pads

Best BJJ Knee Pads 2019The Bodyrox Protective Knee Pads are ergonomically designed, high-quality knee pads perfect for grapplers. Highly comfortable and very breathable, these are definitely one of the best BJJ knee pads ever made! The best thing about them is their price, as they come extremely cheap for such a high-quality piece of gear.
These protective knee pads come in a pair, with two sizes available and in black color. The material they’re made of is 45% polyester, 25% rubber, and 30% EVA. This makes them really soft, yet virtually indestructible. They are mainly useful for preventing mat burn, as well as any issues with the patella or arthritis. They feature good elasticity, quick-dry technology, and a big range of motion. the only drawback is that they offer no lateral or rotational stability, so people with ligament damage might need to look into some of the other suggestions on this list. Money-back guarantee included.

Fox Head Launch Enduro Knee Pads

Best BJJ Knee Pads 2019

The Fox Head knee pads are another option people with general knee issues or discomfort might consider. They’re similar to the BodyRox, apart from a few noticeable differences. It is a product that is especially good for grapplers as it offers great control. Certainly among the best BJJ knee pads out there.

The Fox Head knee pads are silicone-based, and their main avenue of protection is against abrasions. They’re made from neoprene and features state-of-the-art technology that guarantees comfort and protection. They are slightly longer than the Bodyrox, thus offering added compression and improving blood flow. They also feature a silicone gripper that ensures the pads stay firmly in place. The Fox Head pads come in 5 sizes, from small to extra large. The fit is quite tight, so consider acquiring a larger size. Comes in the color black.

Mizuno BJJ Slider Knee Pads

Best BJJ Knee Pads 2019

The Mizuno BJJ knee pads are slide-on knee pads made out of a specific blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex. Although very simple by design, they offer huge protection and great compression. This pad is actually a very well rounded one, offering dynamic overall protection.

What sets the Mizuno Slider Pads apart from others is that it offers immense front protection, while also offering lateral and rotational stabilization. This makes it one of the best BJJ knee pads for any occasion, including grappling competition. It is also a perfect fit for those coming back from ligament or meniscus damage injuries. The material is breathable and dries quickly, plus has moisture-wicking properties. Comfortable and durable this pad comes single and can fit both left and right.

VIPER Grappling Compression Sleeve Knee Pads

Best BJJ Knee Pads 2019This is where we get really serious. The VIPER grappling compression sleeves are truly some of the top products you can get for knee support. These are knee pads that extend significantly both upward and down, providing extra support for adjoining muscles.

The drawback of this particular knee pad is that it is not a good fit for ligament injuries, as there’s no added lateral support. Apart from that, if you’re looking for a solution for meniscus or patella issues, tendonitis, arthritis, or abrasion protection, there’s hardly a better option. The VIPER sleeves are flexible, durable, feature a non-slip silicone strip that holds them in place. Hyperflex technology means they conform to your knee offering maximal comfort during movement. They also provide temperature regulation and support blood flow. There’s one black knee sleeve in the package, able to fit both legs.

Meister BJJ Knee Wraps

Best BJJ Knee Pads 2019

This is where we stray a bit from the usual slide on knee pads and go a bit old-school. While knee wraps are not as common today, these are certainly apart of the best BJJ knee pads category. Their main advantage is that you can use them to individually strengthen any lagging part of the knee.

The way the Meister Knee Wraps work is similar to wrapping your hands for striking practice. The wraps are 72″ long and 3″ wide. They come in a pair, so you can wrap both your knees. The closure system is a hook and loop one, thus making sure everything stays in place even during crazy scrambles. Heavy-duty elastic material means you can move freely while having the ultimate support for any knee issue. The way you wrap them will determine where the majority of support goes, according to individual needs. Multiple colors are available.

The Role Of The Knees In BJJ

The role of the knee joints in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is highly underrated. Most people associate knee issues with sports that take place on the feet. Running is one example of an athletic activity that stresses the knees. The notion about BJJ, on the other hand, is that it is safe on the knees since it’s all about ground fighting. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The way that Jiu-Jitsu places stress on the knees is actually much more alarming than withstanding combat sports. While it is true that your knees do not carry your weight too often in BJJ, they are always under tension. they actually have to carry the weight of an opponent, which is much more dangerous than dealing with your own weight. On top of everything, they have to do so in positions that are mechanically inferior and awkward. No wonder the knee joint gives way so much in grapplers.

Let’s see a practical example. When you work from the guard, open or closed, your knees have to carry weight while constantly moving. They’ll get in very awkward situations and reach their full range of motion capacity in order to sweep to get on top. Now, you have to actually balance either standing or with your knees on the ground, in order to pass. Try knee slicing with an injured knee and you’ll see how much you take them for granted. Next holding dominant positions, like mount, side, or back control requires a lot of knee use. And this is before we even touch on the subjects of takedowns and leg locks. It seems the knees are truly a crucial joint for grappling training. So crucial, that you need to know which the best BJJ knee pads are, so you can keep them safe.

Supportive Knee Gear For Grapplers

So why do you need the best BJJ knee pads in order to train? Some of the more obvious needs are injuries. Yet, injuries on the knees can vary a lot. For example, you could have a ligament injury, cartilage trouble, or muscle issues. Perhaps you have synovial trouble or even some congenital defect. It may even be as simple as a tendency towards mat burn. Whatever the case, you’ll need specific or overall support in order to be able to use your knees to the maximum.

BJJ knee pads should tick a few boxes in order for you to consider giving them a try. After all, that’s what the best of them do. First and foremost, they need to provide comfort when you’re wearing them. No point in struggling and re-adjusting them after every roll. Next, you need knee pads that offer stability in all, or only specific directions. Other aspects you need to be careful with are material, length, padding, and some individual features like fabric, color, and design. There’s also the subject of price, of course.

The simpler and inexpensive options usually contain polyurethane/polyester foam for the padding and do not last too long. Medium quality knee pads are Neoprene ones, that offer durability and softness for the knee. Then, there’s Lycra spandex, a flexible version of knee pads that are incredibly comfortable. With knee braces, there is additional specific support and often a locking mechanism to hold them in place, as opposed to just sliding them on.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing the best Jiu-Jitsu mats for home or academy. The type of surface, size, thickness, and price are all important factors to think about. In this blog post, we will discuss the different types of surfaces available and what might be the best option for you. We will also go over the pros and cons of each type of mat and give you some tips on how to choose the right one for your needs. So, whether you are looking to buy home mats or replace old ones at your academy, read on for some helpful advice! So, be wise when you go about choosing home BJJ mats or mats for MMA, wrestling, or any other kind of martial art. Here are our 5 cents on the subject.

The Best Jiu-Jitsu Mats for Home

Now that you know what you should be looking for let’s see what’s best for home gym flooring, exercise equipment flooring, or mats for the garage gym. When you’re looking for BJJ mats, you’ll end up choosing one of three types. You have more than usual puzzle mats that fit into each other.

Next, you have the rollout mats, which are becoming more popular. Finally, folding mats are a great choice as well. These last ones are similar to the style of Judo mats, only linked together instead of each being separate.

When it comes to choosing the type of mats or just, it’s down to your desires and your home gym requirements. You’ll look for some soft foam with a vinyl mat cover, and probably some wall panels if you’re really into sparring at home and “being wild”.

While we in Jiu-Jitsu don’t need a gymnastics mat it all comes down to a preference for what you’re going to do with it. if you’re going to practice gymnastics for Jiu-.Jitsu with some hard throws and takedowns then gymnastic mats might also be your choice. But in this article, we won’t put a gymnastic mat or tumbling mat on our list because most people training in Jiu-Jitsu won’t need it.

When it comes to mat manufacturers, though, not all mats are equal. You want to choose the best BJJ mats for your “gym carpet”. To that extent, the following brands have proven to be superior to all others in every way possible:

5'x10' x1.25" Dollamur FLEXI-Roll® Martial Arts Tatami Mat
  • 5'x10' Martial Arts Mat
  • 1.25" thick
  • Tatami Textured Surface
  • Same material used for full size mats

  • 1.25″ (3,84 cm) thick
  • Tatami Textured Surface
  • Lightweight
  • Made in the USA

These are all the jazz lately. While Dollamur mats can’t match FUJI for gyms because they’re made for transport and home for easy installation these roll-out mats are slowly but surely taking over from puzzle mats. Just as the puzzle tatami mat did from the old school Judo ones which never really fit together tightly. Once again, like with the folding ones, these mats are perfect for both temporary and permanent use.

These mats are compact once they’re rolled up and are extremely easy to set up. It makes deep cleaning of the academy easy, as you can reach beneath the mat surface whenever you want to. For a more permanent solution, you get rollout mats, roll them out, and stick them together with mat tape.

These Dollamur mats that come in rollout form are 1.25” thick which makes them perfect for BJJ. As a bonus, they’re light and require no strength to set up. They also boast state of an art antimicrobial surface that guarantees germ-free training. Because of its easy folding, it’s considered the best workout flooring for the garage.

FUJI home rollout mats

Fuji Roleout mats

The reputation of Fuji mats is well-known and when you see them in any gym you know that the gym takes their martial arts training seriously.

They are made from a high surface energy polyurethane foam that absorbs shocks and impacts exceptionally well. The closed-cell structure of the foam means that Fuji mats do not absorb moisture or sweat making them suitable for use in all environments.

Each roll-out mat measures 5 feet by 10 feet. Two mats glued together will give you a nice 10-foot x 10-foot training area. They’re ideal for grappling but might be a bit thin for high amplitude takedowns and throws if you’re not going for 5cm thickness. Check on Fujimats website.

  • A FOUNDATION OF QUALITY: For more than a decade, IncStores has been outfitting every room around the home with high-quality interlocking floor tiles in countless styles, because a stronger, safer, smarter looking home starts from the floor up.

Despite the rise of rollout mats and the ease of use of folding mats, puzzle mats still rule the scene. For now, at least. In that sense, these types of mats come n a variety of shapes, sizes, and brands. This is where you need to pay attention. As far as brands go, stick in IncStores and you won’t regret it. In all honesty, they make a mean rollout mat as well.

The IncStroes puzzle mats, though, are their number one product. The material is a special foam and a rubber polymer that fit together much like a jigsaw puzzle. The dimension of one tile is 3×3 ft and the thickness is an inch. With tile mats, you get no overlap, no gaps and you can customize them to any space you might have. However, setting them up takes quite a bit of time, especially on your first try. These are your best solution if you’re the goal is a permanent setup.

A huge advantage of these mats is that you can buy them with beveled edges so that the ends have no jigsaw pieces.  Also, they come in reversible colors, and reversible different colored sides so you can combine them at will. IncStores makes them gray and black and the more usual, red and blue.

Innhomm was a Greatmats company that worked specifically with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mats but changed its name to Innhom. Before they focused entirely on the needs of people that train BJJ, and as such offer all kinds of mat types. They have the “mandatory” puzzle mats, roll-out mats, and folding mats. Greatmats even make the traditional Judo-style mats, only without the straw.

They’re made of EVA foam with a specific surface texture added later. They’re also thicker than usual at 1 5/8″ but are quite compact. As such they offer a great surface both for training throws and for rolling.

In terms of their folding mats, the cool thing is that they can serve a double purpose. You can traditionally use them, to cover the ground or using them as wall padding. In that sense, they feature hook and loop connectors to make installation easier.

Jiu Jitsu, Grappling, and BJJ Mats in general

In our quest to learn as much as we can about mats in martial arts like BJJ, MMA, Judo, Sambo, and other martial arts, we must first look way back. In fact, we’ll go as far back as the early days of Judo in Japan. While people back then used to train on hard wooden floors they soon figured out it was not worth it. Working with what they had, the Japanese came up with the first martial arts mats. The first mats were just rectangles filled with straw. they offered both a soft surface and one that did not interfere with grappling itself.

Today’s modern mats are no longer filled with straw. In the interest of practicality, there are modern materials that offer a much better training environment. Namely, today’s mats are made out of a rubber-like polymer that makes them have that specific rubbery yet still foamy feel to them. They offer both hardness and softness and can absorb much more force than the original “tatami mat” of old. Furthermore, today’s mats are laid out in layers of material, making them much more durable.

Quick facts to know when buying home mats

  • Your training space usually determines the type of mat you plan to buy
  • Easy storage mats like rolling mats are great if you need training space for other things
  • The mats come in different thicknesses which is important depending on your training style
  • Thicker mats are usually better but more expensive
  • Think about the cushion needed for impact absorption
  • The thickness of the mat may depend on whether you’ll put it on concrete or wood floors
  • Non-absorbent mats are the best
  • Training bare feet or in wrestling shoes is not the same when choosing the cover material
  • Completely non-slip cover material is usually not good for a home BJJ mat
  • BJJ mats come in many colors so you can choose from blue, pink, or even yellow if that’s your preference.
  • Price usually varies depending on the quantity of your order
  • jiujitsu mats for home use come in many colors so you can choose from blue, white, red, pink, yellow, and green. etc.
  • Evaluate the materials used to make up the mats as well as their design before deciding which one to buy.

Main Features to look for when buying Home Jiu-Jitsu Mats

  • Thickness
  • Smoothness
  • Material

Thickness

Mats come in different thicknesses. The most common one is 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick. Some pro fighters out there still opt for a 1/2-inch mat. The reason is that a thinner mat will force them to strengthen their core muscles harder since their body will always be on the border of slipping off the mat. If you are not an experienced grappler yet, get a thicker mat. It will give you more safety, especially when rolling with heavyweights.

4cm is pretty standard today. The reason there’s a great spread in the thickness of mats is that people have different preferences. Some prefer a softer mat, while others would rather have one with more give to it. There’s a simple way to test a mat’s softness. Just sit on it and see how you feel. If it gets uncomfortable, chances are it’s too hard for you.

Smoothness

The smoothness is something you shouldn’t ignore when buying a mat for BJJ or any other grappling martial arts training. However, this is a very important aspect of mats. Good BJJ mats have a pretty smooth surface. Today, many have a very coarse surface. Some feel that this is a good thing since it will help the fighters with their grip and takedowns. Others claim that it can cause injuries. If you go to a high-level academy, chances are they will have smooth ones and not coarse ones. Coarse mats types of mats may be too rough for training at home, especially if you have to roll daily with other people. The rough texture can cause skin irritation and abrasions.

Material

Material is where the rubber-like material of mats comes in. Back when Jiu-Jitsu first came out, mats for it were made out of… you guessed it, rubber. There are several benefits to this type of material to make it a durable mat. For one, it makes the mat very resistant to wear and tear. Furthermore, the material is important to handle and absorb a lot of impact and rubbing. Of course, there are other materials to look for depending on your training style and time.

Jiu-Jitsu mat types

The most common types of Jiu-Jitsu mats for home usage are Puzzle mats Smooth mats and mats with a vinyl tarp cover. We’ll get into each separately so you can understand the difference better.

Puzzle, Tatami Mats

As mentioned, martial arts mats come in different shapes and sizes as well as compositions. They’re called that because they can be moved around into different configurations depending on what pieces fit together. These Jiu-Jitsu mats for home use offer a lot of versatility and can be used to cover a large area of ground. They don’t offer a wall to wall coverage but they can be configured in a sort of maze, which is great if you have storage space or doorways you want to cover up.

As the name implies, these mats by our definition come in jigsaw shapes that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. That’s not exactly the case with the design we mentioned above. They’re made out of smaller tiles that can be easily interlocked with each other to cover up any possible space you might have in mind. They come unassembled, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they’re hard to put together.

They can however get expensive depending on how big your matting needs are. There are different types of these mats out there, made with different materials. Each offers its own kind of benefits and drawbacks. Rubber puzzle mats are the most common by far, but others exist that you might want to take a look at if you’re trying to get the best Jiu-Jitsu mat for your buck. The most common rubber mats are made from PVC and EVA foam, which is what we’ll be looking at in more depth now.

The first thing that draws people to those types of BJJ mats for home is the price as they can be very cheap and very pricey too. You can find them from 1cm to 5cm thick and the price depends on their thickness.

Once you know what you’re looking for and how much you want to spend it’s not too hard to find one that suits your needs.

Smooth Mats

As you can tell from its name, this type of mat has a smooth surface that does not restrict movement. On the contrary, it allows for easier sliding when being trained in Jiu-Jitsu throws and submissions. Such a mat is great for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training since it allows for takedowns and throws without getting caught up on any weird motifs on the surface. While these mats are great because it allows for a great grip on your feet, somehow it’s great for guard players too because it allows them to play guard easily with the mat not slowing them down.

The downside of these mats is that they tend to wear out more quickly than other types. They can’t be interlocked so if any damage happens to one piece of the matting, there’s nothing you can do to fix it. This might not be a problem if you’re using the smooth mat in a smaller area, but if you’re trying to cover up a lot of ground with them, it’s going to be much more costly in the long run.

U can find them in many forms. They’re usually 3-5cm thick with 1×1 and 1x2m tiles.

Smooth Mats are always used in all popular Grappling, Wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu tournaments like ADCC, UWW, IBJJF, etc.

Vinyl tarp

Vinyl tarp tatami or canvas surfaces provide extra grip when training barefoot, but they are also notorious for causing mat burns. This kind of mat is usually used in wrestling gyms.

Mats Quality

In most jiu-jitsu mats, the foam is usually made from EVA foam because it holds up well against wear and tears well as is environmentally friendly. In addition, these mats tend to be highly elastic which means they’ll bounce back into shape after a throw. Rubber can be mixed with EVA to make grappling mats last longer but it also makes it more expensive.

Smooth mats are usually covered with polyurethane foam and filled with a type of closed-cell foam tiles which makes the flooring extremely light. This also allows them to offer maximum shock absorption.

You can find these mats in a lot of grappling competitions, martial arts academies, and BJJ gyms.

In terms of qualities to look for in BJJ mats, a few standout. First and foremost, you need to be aware of the material inside the mats. Of course, the more eco-friendly and affordable it is, the better. Next, you need to inquire about thickness. Thicker does not necessarily translate to better for BJJ training. As a rule of thumb go thicker than Karate mats, but not as thick as Judo mats. The surface also plays an important factor as you should avoid too slippery or very rough surfaces. After all, our faces end up all over the mats regularly.

Of course, easy maintenance and long-term durability are also important aspects to consider.

Puzzle Mats vs. Smooth Mats

In my personal opinion, I would always take smooth mats over tatami puzzle textured mats for BJJ. They make it harder for people to grip onto which can be a problem when you’re trying to hold someone down or pass someone’s guard for example.

As I’m a guard player I just can’t be happier than being on a smooth mat where I won’t be stacked as often as I would be on puzzle (jigsaw) mats blocking my movement. It’s much easier to move on your back without forcing a shoulder walk in every stack pressure situation. I’ve noticed that on “puzzles” no matter how hard I arch my back and put weight on my hips without hard shoulder walking I’ll usually end up stacked on my neck and it’s frustrating.

Another fact that goes in favor of a smooth mat is that all serious tournaments use them. So, if you’re training on smooth mats you’ll perform better on tournaments as you’re already used to them.

But, there’s also a downside to smooth mats is that if you’re drilling a lot of throws and takedowns they tend to become pretty slippery when there’s a lot of sweat on them. The puzzle ones get slippery too with sweat on it but not as much as the smooth ones get.

Mat burns

In my long grappling career in Wrestling and BJJ, I’ve noticed one important thing about mat burns.

No matter the mat you’re training on you’ll have mat burns and it just depends on what type of mat you’re used to.

After years of training on puzzle mats without getting any mat burns except in the first few training sessions, I switched to smooth mats and got burns again for the first few training sessions. The same thing goes for vinyl tarp surfaces.

In general, your skin just needs to get used to the new type of mat you’re rolling on.

An Important Note On Mat Hygiene

Finally, whichever mats you decide to use, you need to look after them. If you do not take care of the mats they’ll be unusable very soon. Even worse, they might become a breeding ground for fungi or bacteria which will empty an academy faster than you tap into an armbar. Yes, that involves cleaning them regularly. No matter the brand or mat type, no mats are going to last you a lifetime. To get the most out of the mats, you need to know how to take care of them.

Regular vacuuming is a given, there’s probably no need to even mention it. However, this is not the full extent of mat hygiene. Even with mats that have built-in antimicrobial surfaces, you need an extra wash to remove any potential germs. As such, a dilution of one part bleach to ten parts water can do the trick. So can a lot of commercial products. Just watch out for abrasive ones, as they can easily damage the mats. Spray them up and then wipe it all thoroughly. That way you’ll get years more out of your mats.

How to clean mats properly

  • Wet-vacuum first. Using a wet-vacuum cleaner with its suction power reduced by about half, vacuum the mats again to remove any loose dirt, dust, and skin cells that may still be lying on the surface of the mats.
  • Wipe the mats with a mild detergent and rinse them with water – do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean your mats as they will damage the fabric.
  • Use fresh water to rinse off any residue from the diluted bleach or cleaning solution. Once again, use an old bucket dedicated to rinsing off mats only.
  • Hang mats over a railing or open window, if possible (away from any electrical outlets) to let them air-dry. It’s important that they’re completely dry before they are rolled up for storage. The best time to do it is after training, or you can get in early one day and lay them out to dry. If the mats are not completely dry, mold and germs can grow inside them as they’re rolled up for storage.

FAQ:

How thick should Jiu-Jitsu mats be?

If you’re training with a lot of throws and takedowns the thicker the better. 4cm thickness is usually the best choice for all kinds of BJJ training.

What mats are used for Jiu-Jitsu?

Puzzle and smooth are the most commonly used mats in BJJ gyms. Smooth ones are considered premium.

What size are Jiu-Jitsu mats?

1m x 1m, and 1m x 2m are the most common single mat sizes.

How long do Fuji mats last?

If you take proper care of them they can last for a long period. After 4 to 5 years people notice some bruises, but it doesn’t mean they can’t last more. It just means they won’t be as beautiful as they were before.

Having a BJJ Headgear is sometimes mandatory because during BJJ training and competition the ears get a real beating. While all grappling martial arts share this problem, the ground fighting aspect of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, paired with the using a Gi makes BJJ particularly uncomfortable on the ears if you don’t have Ear Guards. That’s where the Best BJJ Headgear or simply BJJ ear Guards, or ear protection can help immensely.

Using BJJ headgear is often ridiculed in Jiu-Jitsu gyms. People see cauliflower ears as a badge of honor, which is beyond stupid. You do not see your mangled fingers or destroyed knees as such, do you? So, using the best BJJ headgear for your ears makes as much sense as using any kind of Jiu-Jitsu gear like BJJ kneepads or finger tape. To be completely honest, developing cauliflower ears also has an individual aspect to it.

Not everyone is equally susceptible to it. Some people (me included) spend years grappling with and without the Gi without any greatly visible consequences on their ears. Others may just grapple for a couple of weeks and develop Randy Couture-like cauliflower. Using BJJ headgear is a foolproof way of completely removing the risk of never being able to use earbuds ever again. Seems more than worth it to me.

Things To Have in Mind When Buying BJJ Headgear

As with everything else, going online and just getting the first ear guard you see is probably not a good idea. Chances are, you won’t run into the very best BJJ headgear products straight away. And, just like with buying Gis, rashguards, or any other grappling equipment for that matter, you need to be aware of what you’re looking for in BJJ headgear.

Protection

The main qualities that qualify an ear guard among the best BJJ headgear are not that difficult to identify. First and foremost, it is all about the protection of your ears, of course. The first thing to have in mind is how well they work for your particular needs. Most BJJ headgear also provides additional abrasion protection, and some even offer shock absorption. There’s another aspect of protection to consider, though – your partners. A fully plastic, hard ear guards are going to be real hell to grapple against and you’ll soon find yourself without partners in the gym.

Comfort

Next up, we have comfort. Usually, BJJ headgear is made of Neoprene or Nylon, sometimes featuring plastic. In all cases, there’s also foam in the lining making the ear guards comfortable to wear. A big aspect of the material, besides comfort, is slippage. You want your headgear to stay in place during rolling, without the need to continually re-adjust the straps and position. In terms of straps, there are several variations, with different numbers of straps, that work great. And then, there’s the price, of course.

Quality

The quality of BJJ headgear is determined by many factors but most of the time the material it’s made of. Hard plastic ear guards are definitely the most quality piece of gear out there, and you can’t go wrong with them. But if you take some other factors into consideration like your training partners, how they feel, etc. it might not be the best choice.

Durability

Without any doubt, durability is something you should pay attention to, and make compromises when choosing material. The choice usually comes down to choosing whether to go for hard plastic or soft materials. If you go for a sturdy material it won’t break apart easily and you can’t go wrong with it. If you’re going for soft materials they won’t last that long but you’ll feel great with your headgear.

Material

The headgear is usually made of materials like Neoprene, nylon, and plastic with various properties. Of course, softer materials like neoprene and nylon will wear much faster than plastic ones, but they’ll feel pretty good on your head in training. If you train BJJ and you play guard a lot there’s almost no other choice but to go for soft material BJJ headgear.

Plastic headgear will, without a doubt, offer more protection for your ears, but your training partners won’t be pretty happy with it. If you’re both not careful it can injure them, and that’s something you would like to avoid, right?

Straps

Straps should play a huge role when buying a BJJ headgear as it determines how effective it’s going to stay on your head during hard training. There are different types of straps for different kinds of headgear so make sure you think about it when buying.

Style

When choosing a headgear for Jiu-jitsu you’ll often be confronted with different styles of ear guards. The most common styles are 2, 3, or 5-strap ear guard shells. People who train BJJ usually go for soft-shell earguards, but they offer the least protection of all.

Weight

While wearing something on our head we all want it to be as light as it can be. So is the case with BJJ headgear. But, as in most cases, something that weighs more offers more protection too.

Audibility

This plays a huge role even though it seems it’s not. If you have to wear your headgear for the full class you want to be able to hear your professor, and your teammates without wishing to take your BJJ headgear off.

Price

As always, price is a determining factor when buying anything so it is with the BJJ headgear. You’ll have to compensate for some stuff to have a lower price. It’s up to you to choose what works the best for you and we’ll try to help you as much as we can.

BJJ Ear Guard Basics

When to use BJJ headgear?

The main purpose of BJJ ear guards is to protect your ears while you train BJJ pre or after damaging your ears. Some people use them as precautionary measures, but most people use BJJ headgear only when they damage their ears as part of the post-operative process. That process usually lasts for 3 months, and training without any ear guards after surgery is a pretty bad idea.

Make ear guards unmovable on your head.

Ear protectors offer great ear protection only in case you know how to wear them properly. The main thing for your BJJ headgear is to be unmovable once on your head. That will be one of the main factors to look for when choosing your earguards.

Usually, most ear guards have two straps that are going behind the head, and the chin strap under your chin. The chin strap is always mandatory on any kind of headgear, and the rest depends on their build, material, and other factors.

Advantages and Disadvantages of BJJ Headgear

As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages with BJJ headgear too. While there are situations where you can wear them just to protect yourself you need to count on those situations when ear guards are mandatory.

Advantages

  • protects your ears from getting cauliflower ear
  • prevent any damage done to your ears in training
  • almost impossible to train without after cauliflower surgery
  • helps prevent other injuries like concussion

Disadvantages

  • uncomfortable for a lot of people
  • training partners have more grip on you
  • some elements, especially plastic ones, may cut into the wearer’s skin
  • some people will avoid training with ear guards wearer
  • it’s not allowed during tournaments

A Grappling Legacy: The Cauliflower Ear

So what’s the deal with this cauliflower ear anyway? Those that have it can confirm it is really painful before it becomes painless, yet permanently disfigured. Those that have taken care of it, know how painful and draining it can be. You can hardly get rid of it with just one draining, so expect to have to repeat the procedure a few times each time you start getting the symptoms.

Cauliflower ear is an occurrence as old as grappling martial arts. There are even statues depicting grapplers of old who have visible cauliflower ears. What happens is that the cartilage in your ears can’t take the pressure of grappling and starts breaking. Whenever that happens, the body takes care of any cracks and breaks by building scar tissue.

The trouble with cartilage is that it is notoriously undersupplied with blood, making healing hard, and complete recovery impossible. That means a build-up of scar tissue each time you break the cartilage. The harder the break, the worse the buildup. Hence the appearance of cauliflower structure in the ears.

Best BJJ Headgear 2019 Cauliflower EarThe reason we end up with an injury to the cartilage in the first place is friction. And, there’s no lack of it in BJJ, especially when you’re training with the Gi.

Getting your head stuck in numerous positions, or breaking chokes apart are great ways to get yourself on the cauliflower train.

And, believe me, unless you have the very best Jiu-Jitsu headgear you’ll develop them sooner or later. Your only hope is to go and drain all the blood and liquid straight away before everything hardens. Take a look at the draining procedure to decide if it’s worth taking that risk.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does everyone in BJJ get cauliflower ear?

Not everyone is equally susceptible to it. Some people spend years grappling with and without the Gi without any visible consequences on their ears. Others may just grapple for a couple of weeks and develop Randy Couture-like cauliflower.

Do ear guards prevent cauliflower ears?

Using ear guards is a foolproof way of completely removing the risk of getting cauliflower ears. Ear protection will protect your ears from all kinds of blows and rubbings to your ear thus removing the chance of injuring your cartilage and hematoma to form.

Why do you get cauliflower ear from BJJ?

The main reason why you get cauliflower ear in BJJ is the friction. Especially, if you’re training with the Gi on. Getting your head stuck in numerous positions opens the possibility of getting blows and rubbing your ears. As a result, that shears the ear’s cartilage from its overlying perichondrium

Can you wear headgear in BJJ?

Yes! Especially now when there are different types of designs and materials used to create headgear. You’re not limited to old plastic headgear that hurts and annoys both you and your training partner.

What are the best Jiu-Jitsu earguards?

It’s hard to say which BJJ earguards are the best as there are all kinds of different earguards available on the market. While pure wrestling ear guards offer great protection people in BJJ tend to go for soft ear protection. The reason behind this is that Jiu-Jitsu training is very versatile and requires a lot of head rubbing on both the floor and your partners.

Conclusion

Wearing BJJ headgear is simply a must if you’re not a fan of cauliflower ears. Moreover, as you can see, the protection extends to much more than just your ears. Plus, as much as you think cauliflower ears are cool they’re not pleasant. They get in the way, might be cause for pain and infections, and headphones are a real hassle, to mention just a few nuisances. Get your Jiu-Jitsu Headgear now and wear it every time you roll to spare yourself the trouble.

Training BJJ in the Gi is a truly unique experience. It is not that much the fact that you’re wearing the Gi, but the feel of the material and how it is used. In terms of feel, the first time you wear a BJJ Gi is not something most people associate with comfort. A Jiu-Jitsu Gi consists of an extremely sturdy and hard jacket, and thick, multilayered pants. The way Gi’s are woven is also highly specific. This is all very understandable, given the amount of “abuse” a Gi needs to be able to take. However, it doesn’t change the fact that training in a durable Gi is like trying to roll with a heavy blanket on. There is, however a hack – lightweight Gis. Today, we’ll take a look at the best Lightweight BJJ Gi options that can replace all your other kimonos.

Thinking a lightweight BJJ Gi is not going to be able to withstand the demands of training? think again. When we’re talking about a lightweight Gi, we mean a modern design, state-of-the-art one, not an Aikido Gi. More on that later. For now, it is enough to understand that you can both feel light and comfortable and train BJJ with a Gi that’ll last. yeah, I didn’t believe it either until a short while ago. Completely by chance, I acquired an ultralightweight Gi (featured later in our best lightweight BJJ Gi guide) and it changed my grappling life. Suddenly, I could train and roll wearing something that resembles a rashguard more than it does a kimono. And yet, it is proving to be just as tough and durable as the stiff and uncomfortable ones.

The Lightweight BJJ Gi

When it comes to the best lightweight BJJ Gi, the list is not as short as you might think. Basically, every larger BJJ Gi manufacturer out there has at least one lightweight series available. Completely understandable too, given how different training in one is.

Lightweight GIs are the latest product of an ever-growing industry. The real challenge with a BJJ gi is durability. Given the price of kimonos, it’s understandable that people like to buy stuff that lasts, preferably for years to come. On that note, the logical thing is to go for the tough, sturdy, Gi that weighs a ton and is hard to move in. Plus, you need to factor it in whenever you weigh in for the competition. If you cut weight to grapple, then you know how much of a hassle that is. And this is all before we talk about training in hot weather. The need for a lightweight Gi that has all the same properties of a heavy-duty one, but none of the drawbacks was just a question of time. Luckily, manufacturers responded to the need for such a kimono.

The weave used in a lightweight Gi is usually a pearl one. It is the lightest Gi weave that’s allowed for use in IBJJF tournaments. To be fair, there are also single-weave ultra-light GIs, but they do not last nearly as much as others. The pearl weave allows air to pass through and does not impede the range of motion while offering amazing tensile strength. Finally, there is the Hybrid weave Gis, meaning combinations of weaves that deliver the best possible Gi both in terms of performance and weight.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gi

In reality, everyone needs at least one lightweight Gi. Even if it’s just for competition, it is going to change the way you approach Jiu-Jitsu. Plus, the price of lightweight GIs is far more affordable than that of double-weave heavy-duty ones. In order to facilitate the next Gi shopping spree, we compiled a list of the best lightweight BJJ Gi options that are readily available in 2024. They’re becoming increasingly more popular though, so you’ll need to get a move on if you’re going to get yours.

Aeroweave Ultra Lightweight Gold BJJ Gi Review

Rolling Light – The Advantages

The reason we’re looking for the best Lightweight BJJ Gi is that nobody likes to train grappling in armor. However, apart from comfort, there are a few other considerations when sometimes too lightweight kimonos. They don’t just help us get through training easier but also help us “cheat” the system a bit.

Namely, in competition terms, a lightweight Gi will allow you to have a much more relaxed weight cut if you need one at all. In comparison, regular Gis are twice as heavy. While not cheating per se, they do help you turn tournaments into more enjoyable experiences. Plus, competing in them is a lot more comfortable.

From a technical standpoint, lightweight GIs are much easier to manipulate. This means you can use lapels, collars, sleeves, etc to attack your opponent. You’ll be able to access your favorite Gi weapons much more easily than with regular Gis. Plus, people won’t be able to control you as much, because lightweight Gi’s are harder to manipulate with grips. There are also movement restrictions, which are non-existent with lightweight GIs. it is basically like rolling/competing No-Gi but with all the benefits of GI Jiu-Jitsu.

On a final note, there’s climate. In my opinion, lightweight GIs are not just the best, but the only option for people living in warm spots. Training with a full-on Gi in 95+ degree weather is neither fun nor reasonable. Lightweight GIs not only alleviate some of the discomforts but also provide much better ventilation than heavier GIs. Anyway, if you’re looking for the best jiu-jitsu GI of all weights check out our Best BJJ GI article.

Having trouble with your knees? You should consider looking into some of the very best BJJ knee pads to give your knees comfort and help prevent injuries. Oh, we’re already too late with that advice? Well, for those of you currently injured, nursing a chronic injury, or coming back from a massive knee trauma, knee pads are not going to cut it. You need something stronger. You need the good stuff. And the good stuff comes in the form of the Best BJJ Knee Braces as opposed to knee pads. If you have a messed up knee, you need to provide it with some real serious support. Your best (and most affordable) options for 2024 are listed below.

A knee brace can save your life! Well, ok, perhaps not your life, but certainly your Jiu-Jitsu career! Take it from someone coming back off a serious knee injury. Rest and rehab are fine and they’re essential pieces of coming back to full health. However, getting back to the gym only once you’re fully healed and cleared to go without any support is something none of us grapplers have the patience to see through. So, coming back to the train means you need some heavy gear to make sure your knees stay safe. Of course, you also want to be able to move as much as possible and have support, particularly in the area of movement associated with your injury. Our selection of the best BJJ knee braces for 2024 covers all of the above, and then some! Check them out!

Knee Injuries in Jiu-Jitsu

Injuries in Jiu-Jitsu are a normal thing, just as in any martial art. Trauma to the small joints of the fingers and toes is arguably the most prevalent. Neck injuries are also very common, but I do think knee injuries can give them a run for second place. I do not have precise statistical data, though, nor does anyone want to see it. We all know knee injuries happen in grappling, Chances are you know someone who has one, or you’re dealing with one yourself.

On the subject of knee injuries, we can basically deliver trauma to every possible structure of the knee when we’re grappling. Sudden movements in an inward or outward direction easily tear the collateral ligaments (LCL and MCL) on each side of the knee. Twisting motions under pressure and weird angles, which are ample in Jiu-Jitsu, are the main culprits behind ACL/PCL injuries to ligaments on the inside of the knee. The best BJJ knee braces are highly useful in such cases.

The menisci or cartilage of the knee also gets a beating in BJJ. Although they’re spared from the usual trauma of standing martial arts, they’re exposed to much more severe trauma. Triangle chokes and all similar positions can easily damage a meniscus, given that they’re always done against resistance. A whole myriad of sweeps also has the potential to destroy any of the two menisci present in the knee.

Finally, there are much rarer but difficult to come back from tendon and muscle injuries. Patellar tendons are the most likely to suffer, although tendons of larger attaching muscles also sometimes snap. Knee-related muscle trauma is rare and usually accompanies serious ligament and/or meniscus damage.

Knee Support

The dangers of coming back from a knee injury too soon, or rolling without the help of one of the best BJJ knee braces are potentially devastating. If you’re careful, re-injury of the same structure is not very probable. However, favoring a certain part of your knee, or training with one that’s not strong enough results in trouble for other structures in your knee. For example, if you injure your LCL, and come back too soon, you’re very likely to also tear your ACL. The reason for this is that favoring your knee for certain motions puts more strain on other structures. it also means can end up with a useless knee and wave goodbye to sports. In severe cases, you might even end up injuring the opposite side knee as a result, of your ankle or hip, as a result of compensation.

While some people still think knee braces are giant pieces of equipment that impede movement, you know from our guide above that this is not the case. A solid knee brace means you can move freely while making sure that your knee has the support it requires. Even better, you can now go with a knee brace that supports all knee structures, or a highly specialized one. Whatever the case, you now know which are the best BJJ knee braces and where to get them!

Wrapping Up

All in all, whenever you end up clutching your knee, you’ll be in need of a knee brace. Our guide is not only the most comprehensive one but also features only the highest-grade, best-priced braces. Choose whatever you need, from specialized and lightweight to complete protective gear that’ll keep both your knee joints safe from further injury.

As a final note, make sure you’re not wearing a brace at all times (apart from the period right after an injury). This can make your knee musculature weaker. Instead, use the brace only when you’re training/rolling, and forget all about knee pain!

What’s the one thing everyone in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu craves more than anything else? If you’re thinking “a black belt”, then you’re only half right. It is a belt, and eventually, it is going to be the black belt. Yet, the one thing everyone wants more than anything is that elusive, very first blue belt. Even after you get it and progress up, even as you near your black belt, you won’t desire any other belt as much as you did your blue belt.  While it is a well-known martial arts cliche that there’s a lot more to a belt than just the rank, in BJJ these go beyond a philosophical aspect. There are plenty of things you should know if you’re to choose the truly best BJJ belts for your grappling adventures.

Buying a BJJ belt might seem like a mundane thing to do. You go online, check out the color you need and you’re all set until your next promotion. If it was only that simple. As you’ll see further on, belts in BJJ play a huge role in every aspect of the sport. Their size and material are going to influence how you execute techniques in a lot of situations. They’re even important from a defensive aspect, as they might turn into very effective handles for your opponent. On top of everything else, you have to make sure your belt is in line with tournament rulesets when you’re entering competitions. All in all, belts are an integral part of Gentle Art, and nothing but the very best BJJ belts should be good enough for you.

This time we’ll explore all the BJJ belt options worth our while. the goal is to figure out which is the absolute best for you. We’ll go over everything, from basic pros and cons to very detailed remarks.

So, it is time to treat yourself to a high-quality piece of training essential this 2024. We have such a huge selection of the best BJJ belts that you’re bound to find an option or two that suits you perfectly!

Tatami BJJ Rank Gi Belt

Tatami BJJ BeltsThere’s no way we can look at the best BJJ belts and not feature a Tatami product. Tatami is the ultimate BJJ brand – they make everything you might need as a grappler. From Gis to rashguards, belts, bags, and backpacks. So, naturally, they’re one certain option when it comes to BJJ belts.

The Tatami belts come in all regular BJJ grading colors. They even have all the kids’ colors covered. The real value of buying a Tatami belt is that it comes at a cheap price for the impeccable quality it offers. All in all, if you have a doubt as to what belt you should choose, or you are a complete beginner, go for a Tatami BJJ belt. You can’t go wrong, in any case here, as long as you get the belt length right.

Sanabul BJJ Pro Belt

Sanabul BJJ Pro BeltSanabul is a company that, like Tatami, has a great price for a really good quality product. Sanabul’s belts come in all regular colors and plenty of sizes. Furthermore, they are thick, yet light, and extremely durable. The coloring is very solid, doesn’t fall off with washing, and is easily distinguishable.

Durability is this belt’s best feature. It is also on the IBJJF-approved belts, making it one of the best BJ Jbelts you can own. The only thing that might turn some people away is thickness. While it is not a very thick belt, the Sanabul Jiu-Jitsu belt comes thicker than some other options on our list. And this is not a bad thing, it is just down to personal preference. Actually, despite its thickness, the Sanabul belt stays firmly in place even during particularly scrambling rolls.

Another feature this belt boasts of is the material. It is made from antifungal and antimicrobial fabric that’s going to keep your belt germ-free. Still, this is no excuse to wash it regularly!

Gameness BJJ Belt

Gameness BJJ BeltAlthough Gameness has the reputation of making particularly sturdy Gis, this is not the case when it comes to belts. Their line of belts feels unusually soft at the touch. While this is unusual, it is an advantage. The softer structure of the material makes Gameness belts virtually impossible to untie.

The material in Gameness belts is ultra-high-quality cotton, and they come in all the usual BJJ colors. As soft as they are, they’re extremely durable and strong. Wear and tear on these belts only shows up after a considerable time of extensive use. The colors are also very deep and distinct, plus they’re resistant to fading as a result of washing. That’s one less excuse for not washing your belt! An additional feature that merits mentioning is that the belt is a bit narrower than others, which only adds to its value as a belt with a near-perfect knot.

Venum BJJ Belt

Venum BJJ BeltSimilar to Tatami belts, there’s hardly a way to do the best BJJ belts review and not include Venum belts. Venum is one of the leading companies when it comes to BJJ-specific gear, from Gis to belts and No-Gi stuff. The belts that Venum offers are 100% cotton of very high quality. These belts are of a thicker variety, similar to the Sanabul ones.

These belts are as durable as any on our list of best BJJ belts. they come in all usual colors and are resistant to fading. Venum usually includes a free patch as a gift with every purchase, if you do not have enough reasons to get one of their belts. Expect the belt to feel rigid in the beginning, but it won’t take long to break it in.

Hypnotik BJJ Belt

Hypnotik BJJ BeltThis one is a real treat. As far as BJJ belt materials go, Hypnotic belts are original. They’re made out of the same material that Hynotik Gis are made of. That in itself guarantees durability and quality. They do feel strange at first and are somewhat wider compared to other Jiu-Jitsu belts.

As far as durability goes, the material is a pearl weave Gi material, so forget about this belt ever falling apart. It’s also never going to come undone during rolling or competition. One thing that you should be aware of, is that it does shrink a bit with washing. So, if you’re about to get one, opt for a slightly longer version than what you regularly choose.

Fuji BJJ Belt

Fuji BJJ BeltAnother BJJ classic, along with the lines of Venum and Tatami. Fuji is one of the most trusted Gi and belt companies in existence. Fuji’s belt might be considered the gold standard for the best BJJ belts. They are cheap, good quality, and soft yet tight when tied. They also come in all possible Jiu-Jitsu-related colors, albeit at a lighter version compared to most others.

Also, IBJJF approved, that getting a Fuji belt has no drawbacks whatsoever. The belt withstands washing and repetitive use without problems. They’re even pre-shrunk so they won’t get any shorter regardless of how often you’re washing them. Overall, Fuji is one of the all-time best BJJ belts out there, still holding onto the mantle in 2024!

Revgear BJJ Belt

RevGear BJJ BeltThe Revgear belts are usually belts people have as backups. The main reason for this is not a lack of quality, but the price. The Revgear belts are the cheapest on our list, meaning they’re affordable enough to own as a second belt.

Every Revgear belt is made of cotton and comes at a standard width of 1.5 inches. Lengths are the same as Gi sizes, and it comes in an extended range of colors. This is yet another very durable belt that is going to last you a long, long time. Considering the quality they come to, it is more than the perfect second-best option.

Hayabusa Unisex BJJ Belt

Hayabusa Unisex BJJ BeltAs if all other belts are not Unisex, the Hayabusa is a belt obviously appropriate for both sexes. The true value of this belt, though, is in its construction.

The Hayabusa is a particularly sturdy belt example, with reinforced stitching along the full length of the belt. Moreover, it’s made out of gold-weave material, which means it’ll last you a lifetime at least. For such a reinforced and tough belt, it comes at a surprisingly lightweight.

Ronin BJJ Belt

Ronin BJJ BELTRonin belts are the best-looking of the bunch, at least when it comes to color. The stitching is usually a different color than the belt, giving it a very unique appearance. A strong and flexible belt, that is great for both training and tournament use.

The price of Ronin belts is not as cheap as some of the others, but it is worth it. These belts are not just stylish but can also take a beating. On top of everything, they make one of the best knots I’ve personally tied on a BJJ belt, period. Worth checking out and a great option to use for competition, while reverting to something like the Revgear for regular training.

Vulkan BJJ Belt

Vulkan BJJ BeltTo wrap things off, we’ll go over the belts that one of the cool old Gi companies has to offer. Vulkan Gis are some of the best you can own, especially if you like to compete regularly. This belt comes out of the packaging smooth and flexible, without any rigidity whatsoever.

Six rows of stitching make it a very durable option. Scramble belts are thick, soft, and fit perfectly from the first moment. They’re safe to place in the washer and are guaranteed not to shrink even slightly. All colors are available, and they’re IBJJF-approved. The price of VULKAN belts is usually a bit above average unless you use the best deals available for Vulkan BJJ belts!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belts

The deal with belts in martial arts is pretty straightforward. In the beginning, all belts were white and had a very simple task – hold the pants up. In feudal Japan, as people spent years training their art, their belts got dirtier and dirtier, turning into “black belts”. Later on, Judo’s founder Dr. Jigoro Kano adopted the practice of white and black belt ranks. In the coming years, he improved on it, introducing other colors for a clear way of ranking someone’s skills. The Gracies then adopted and slightly modified, this basic Judo system of belts to fit the needs of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Grading in Jiu-Jitsu is a bit simpler than that of modern Judo or Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. At least when it comes to adults. There are 5 belts that you need to get through to get to a black belt. Those are white belts for beginners, followed by blue, purple, and brown belts respectively, for advanced students. Black is the belt of mastery, but far from the final one. Beyond it, there are two coral belts and the real peak of Jiu-Jitsu – the red belt. To be real, a black belt should be your one real aim in Jiu-Jitsu, as there are some huge time requirements for earning some of the coral belts.

The earliest age at which you can get a blue belt is 16. Until then, you can go through the kids’ belt ranks, which start as early as four years of age. They feature an additional 5 belts (white, grey, yellow, orange, and green) before graduating to a blue belt. From there on, about two years per belt is the average, meaning the earliest you can earn a black belt is after about a decade of training.

BJJ Belt Characteristics

From a technical perspective, there are certain things you need to know when you’re looking for a belt for you. The best BJJ belts have the common trait of excelling in each one of the following categories.

First of all, uniform size. Belt length usually coincides with the size of your Gi. So if you wear an A3 gi, for example, an A3 belt should be a good fit for you. The thing is, just like with Gis, different belts that are “same sized” are very different. A smaller or bigger belt size might be more appropriate for you than the one that’s identical to your Gi size. Furthermore, once you choose your favorite brand of belt, it is key that with each following purchase, you get a belt that’s the same size as you desire. Make sure you read the size charts every time you go shopping for a new belt.

When it comes to color, you might think there’s not much to it. Well, if you check some of the best options out there, you’ll see that you can easily get confused. With some brands, blue and purple are so close that you might have a really hard time differentiating them. Make sure the belt you choose has a distinct color and shade.

When it comes to the thickness of the belt, you need to be aware of two main aspects. The first is comfort and the second it knot tightness. In terms of comfort, you’ll need to try on a few different belts to know which thickness is the perfect fit for you. As for the knot, expect it to come undone with every belt. the thing is, some belts provide a much more secure knot than others.

Choosing The Right Jiu-Jitsu Belt For You

Before we go on to explore what the best BJJ belts are and where you can find them, let’s look at a more individual aspect of selection. The first thing to have in mind is the training experience. If you’re a beginner you should either ask an instructor or better yet, follow the suggestions we’re about to offer you. If you’re a more experienced student then make sure you know what you’re looking for in a belt. Comfort, length, potential tournament use, fabric, thickness, etc.

Your style of grappling is also a big determinant of the type of belt you choose. If you like to rely on using your own lapels for attacks, for example, you might want a belt that’ll release your Gi easily. On the contrary, if you like to prevent people from easily accessing your Gi, you need a tighter fit. If you’re a competitor, make sure you follow the Gi rules so that you do not need to buy another belt on the spot.

Finally, consider the idea of having two belts. One can be for regular training, and it can be the most comfortable version of a belt for you. the other should be a more “official” one, for seminars competitions, etc.

Conclusion

The belt is a huge part of BJJ, and every belt you wear is going to be with you for years. Considering this, it is advisable to get a belt that would last and do its job perfectly. Our Best Belts guide has options for everyone, from recreational grapplers to competitors! Choose your favorite and never worry about belt issues again!
